Anyway, I think it's an option if you just like to emulate. I can't play on my DSi without the FF, that's why I prefer my phone.Using real DS hardware is horrible by today's standards.

I've been enjoying my BSP D6 more than I thought I would, playing 2D titles with an analog stick when they have an overhead view feels a lot better than I expected, sports video games especially, it's allowing me to enjoy my brand new Galaxy A25 very much. The FIFA Club World Cup in the USA got me in the mood for some soccer, replaying a few favorites and it's been great.

Also I think I need a custom firmware, it's a bit laggy and has odd errors and crashes.

Is there a way to add emulators besides retroarch? Where can I read up on this?

Just take your pick between muOS and Knulli. Rocknix is okay, but it's not beginner friendly. You won't be adding anything, you'll get what you'll get, which is actually more than your hardware can actually run.

What would the best pocketable device that can run the pokemon randomized app (upr-android) to make endless pokemon roms (gba at latest, don't think I'll touch the DS ones)
Preferably clamshell since i don't trust the screen being on the outside.

There are replacement screens for the Deck (e.g. you can put an OLED screen into the OG deck) and Hall effect sticks for it.
I also saw one Brazilian dude replacing 1G RAM chip for 2G and it worked.
Obviously not a single company doing this professionally because it's such a small market and mostly consist of useless mods.

They will all run up to and including PS1 games no problem, GBA included. Flip2 will run PS2, GC and even some Switch games. It is the most powerful of them (reflected on the price and the fact it had a fan), with a great OLED screen. But it is also much bigger than the test, calling it pocketable would be stretching it.
Miyoo flip has a lot of problems with a hinge, some even arrive broken.
SP had some too, but at a much lower scale. Flip2 is a bit too new and expensive to have reliable info on it (not as many people have it for now), but I've seen at least one with a damaged hinge.

I keep trying to convince myself on buying something else thats lighter yet my phone seems to always make more sense there except for controls. All the flippy handhelds are overwhelming weak, so I'm not sure how they could replace my phone as I don't want to carry multiple devices. maybe I should stop thinking about this shit or just buy an rg nano and call it a day. it's better than every official PokΓ©mon game, genuinely. It has like 800 PokΓ©mon, with the superior 16 bit art style that looks way better than the Fischer price 3d models in the new games, the battles are interesting and the wild mons are all interesting. Ever trainer in the whole game is throwing different monsters at you ever battle instead of just fighting millions of fucking ratatas and pidgies, the wild Mon are much better spread instead of just fighting millions of zubats, it has tons of QoL features that make it less annoying the official games, and it has modular difficulty so you can make it harder than baby vanilla games but without the EV grinding autism. The area designs are great, much more interesting than the basic ass originals, more in line with the DS games.

This is actually a fantastic combo. Once I 3D-printed some grips and trimmed the inner rubber part to fit my phone with its case. The only downside is that I have to wear baggy cargo pants or use a sling bag to carry it around. A less wide aspect ratio would be nice, but since I also play non-/vr/ games and lots of recompiled ports, it’s not a huge issue.

I’m also considering buying something like a 406H for a friend’s birthday, but I’m not sure if I should spend that much on something that might not be used to its full potential. Is there a more affordable option thats not a total piece of shit? I have no idea what he’ll even play on it.

Retroarch only saves properly when you normally close the program. It's not constantly saving to a file outside of I think PS1 or a few other systems where it saves to a virtual memory card but instead saves to ram or a temporary file or something. If it closes because of a crash or like how it happened for you the save is gone to the ether because it never finalized saving it to an actual file. That's my experience on the few times it's crashed on me and I lost my progress.

Six face buttons, dpad on top, 8" 21:9 extra wide screen on top, 5" 4:3 LCD in lower position. Two TF card slots and at least four usb ports. It's not like these parts are hard to find. And certainly will be accommodated within the extra width of the device, if that's their concern.

I got an odin 2 last year and I think it's great. I can stream via steam link PC games, or stream ps5 games as well, and they work really well on a 5ghz network.
Beyond streaming it handles PS2 and gamecube just fine, with the harder to emulate PS2 games only needing to be rendered at 1.5x if they aren't running well. And that's only a handful of games and it's the emulators fault more than the hardware.
A lot of people don't seem to value how easy android makes connecting bluetooth stuff. I connected 4 ps4 controllers to my odin2 to play N64 games with friends with it connected to a TV.

I really don't see the point of getting anything more expensive/powerful than a odin2 unless you go all in and get a $1000 windows handheld. There is even a linux build for the odin2 now that apparently does Xbox and ps3 emulation pretty well.

It's apparently fine at the emulation if you use Drastic and only want to use Drastic. Everything runs fine there as far as I've seen mentioned. If you want RetroAchievements or multiplayer with MelonDS (DS) or DeSmuMe that's where it actually has issues because it can't keep a stable framerate, but I wonder if that's down to Android specifically and how it would do on Linux.

It also doesn't integer scale well unless you want to cut off pixels at 2x scaling so the only way you get it to look decently is how they have it by default which is full screened at 1x integer scaling with the overlay to split the screens. It seems like it was made more for the SHMUP crowd than the DS crowd since the SHMUP side seems to look and perform way better.

they will certainly have a better screen, battery and wi-fi, USB-C and Bluetooth support, and the most important: two full-sized thumbsticks
You need eboots for PS1 support which means no save states, and you won't get many updated emulators as the PSP homebrew scene is pretty much dead

Retroarch handles basically everything up to around GBA as good as or identical to the standalones nowadays. There's really no point to fiddling with the standalones as much which is why everyone primarily relies on RA now. On anything that uses Linux you can technically install the standalones with the Terminal and then figure out how to add it to your frontend as a choice, but in general you're not going to really be using them. They are usually provided for anything past GBA on things like DC, PSP, and so on with most of the non-stock firmwares.

Android has the choice of standalone emulator apps but the issue is many of them are not up to date or as good as what you'd find on Linux.

NTA but it appears they're using brown UHMW tape. No sense in trying to make it seem like some super magical secret. It would hold up much better than electrical or kapton tape; I wouldn't use those if you can help it.. I added two layers on my d-pad and buttons, worked perfectly. Cheap enough on amazon, so grab some. Good to have around the house regardless.

What? I just updated the shaders within RA and found it in the bezel folder. Set rendering to vulkan if you can't find it.
tv-aperturegrille works the best for me, it has bloom and bezel variants too (looks cool, like a pocket crt). There's also tv-NTSC if you want more color bleed, works best for NES.
You can mess with the parameters to turn on/off stuff like ambient light, curvature and stuff

I assume that if a system has a surplus of ram after accounting for OS functionality and the emulator then the CPU scheduler won't need to do extra work juggling read/writes to swap and will be a bit snappier. Depends on emulator.

Got my hands on the RG557 a few days ago, posting thoughts

>good
Feels very comfortable in the hands.
Anbernic finally released a handheld that can be called powerful. Havent tested a lot but there were a few PS2/GC games that I was able to play at 3X resolution, either at fullspeed in high perf mode (like Silent Hill 2, Manhunt 2's "uncut beta", Sonic Heroes GC's first two stages, Yakuza) or mostly there with some dips to the 50s (the first track in F-Zero GX, Smash Melee, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles).
Comes with emulators preinstalled
OLED panel
>eh/unsure
RGB lighting is better than the 556 but I turned it off anyways.
Face buttons are a bit stiff but usable
Not sure where the performance cap is. Still havent tried Drakengard 1 which brings weaker ARM devices to their knees even at 1x res.
Apparently AnbernicAI can be used to do machine translation for games, but it seems to require a terms of service agreement so I havent touched it.
Apparently some models being shipped out are lemons with stuck buttons or bricked.
>bad
Plastic feels very cheap compared to the RG40XXV, even with the white model my gross greasy hands still left smudges.
Downfiring speakers
Battery life is mediocre at 5500mAh
Analog triggers dont seem to have a lot of travel.
Too damn expensive at MSRP
Analog sticks too small. Fine for third person games but not ideal for fine-aiming in Timesplitters 1 personally.
Some games like Shadow the Hedgehog at 2x on Dolphin or GT4's Seattle Circuit on AetherSX2 at 3X still have pretty bad slowdown. Not sure if this is a problem just with Mediatek drivers or if this on the emulator.
Fan gets fucking loud on high perf mode
Apparently some android gachas refuse to work with it due to being a "rooted device"

I'd never pay full price + shipping, but I paid $309 CAD for it on Aliexpress with free shipping. Worth a look if its on sale and you want a capable 6th gen emu device, avoid if you really want to do Android gaming + switch/wii u emu.

Clamshells are the best form, they allow full control and maximum power.
>Largest screen to size ratio.
>Full lower section real estate dedicated to ergonomics and extra controls.
>Lid protects screen and controls while being smooth, yet armored in pocket/bag.
>Allows fully adjustable viewing angles from any grip position. In hand, on lap, or on a table set down. Which is better for the neck.
>A good clamshell is it's OWN dock, with all necessary ports built in. So paying extra for a dock becomes a question of intelligence.
