It's good enough to make you realize there are significant changes it needs to make if it wants to be more than a flash in the pan series with good presentation.
Off the top of my head, the character skills need more integration with the gameplay outside of NPCs in towns. If Throne is supposed to be a master thief/assassin, she ought to be able to use her abilities to help avoid wandering random encounters, or at least get initiative going into them. That's far more dynamic and engaging than just knocking out villagers who happen to be in your way, under circumstances most characters wouldn't even be okay with roleplay-wise.

There are some references, callbacks, and cameos in OT2, but they're separate universes.

Does the game ever get good? I abandoned it because it feels like it consist entirely of the worst part of any RPG / JRPG only: The start.
The start of every RPG and specially JRPG, is just... All exposition and explanation and plot and almost no fucking game. Usually something you "deal" with because you know after the slow burn start is over, you usually get to a good mix of game & story, where you get nice big chunks of beating enemies, finding treasure and equipping bigger swords with cool story moments in between.
But Octopath it feels like you do the slow burn no game all talk start and then once you are ready to begin for real you get orgasm denied and you get another start. And then another. And then I couldn't fucking deal any more and quit.

JRPG have a bad reputation of characters in their 20s and 30s being considered “old”. Funnily enough it’s the Beastlings that are the ones that are elderly in their late 30s based off sprite usage and some inquiries in the game on top of there being no Beastling above the age of 50 which means Ochette is relatively older than all the human travelers except for Osvald.

In fact looking at her side profile it's pretty close to the ones found in the artbook except the eyes are a bit different. The front facing profile is accurate to her design too, if her figure didn't give her a weird human sized mouth and instead had her mouth going fully around her muzzle like the illustration it would match that picture for the most part. So it's true to her design but it's off style since it's not done in the typical anime style of the series.

Yes and you’re wrong. Her design is that furry it’s just that the artstyle downplays where most of her furriness is, which is her face. The same thing happens to the Caits but they’re bipedal house cats so it’s not as severe and the human travelers simplified noses aren’t as severe as half of her face being simplified. But we know it’s not intentional because her designers were worried about her looking like a cat girl, or a human with cat ears, in her figure and they specifically said she isn’t one. But a great thing about Ochette is her unique profile in comparison to the human travelers, her figure which shows she has a full on snoot, and her figure sketch which shows she’s meant to have a bigger mouth. All this shows she’s more of a short dog person and not something like a Mithra from Final Fantasy. It gives her a lot of versatility because you can drew her in anime Kemono style but you can also draw her with a defined snoot like that picture and still be correct.

And again her proportions aren’t consistent in most art.

I'm few hours into the game, and I'm already put off by the way none of main characters seem to interact with each other. I was on a quest to find some book only for my mc to volunteer to help some lady with a pilgrimage without a word being exchanged between them. Then they both volunteer to help some random huntress and again no dialogue from any of them on the matter. It makes all the characters feel so lifeless. Is this just because of the ill-conceived "you can start with any of the 8 characters!" gimmick and thus only applies to the introductory quests, or is the entire game like this? Do all the main characters exist in their own little bubbles and never interact with each other at all? Because if that's so, I don't think I'm going to continue playing, because it's really off-putting.

They interact in banters (only available in ch2 onwards) and tavern banters (after ch4 I think) provided they're in the active party in certain points of their corresponding stories.
OT2 follows the same general format with banters appearing in ch2 onwards, but they also have paired chapters (crossed paths) where two of the 8 do some stuff together for 2 mini-filler chapters, all of which lead to the final chapter - which OT1 does not have.

I think the Octopath games are an interesting experiment. Not bad, but not god tier either. Here's what I think they should do for 3 (which is what they should have done from the start):

Perpetual prologue is such a good way to describe the first game. It was one thing if you had to watch the party prologue eight fucking times but to keep doing this over and over again for every part just made the whole thing feel like a waste of time and nothing is fucking happening. Because there’s things you don’t see about her design unless you own the artbook or got the Collector Edition of the game. The artstyle leaves it ambiguous because Asian artists usually don’t draw a facial details and the way they stylzed faces, look at the way a majority of Asian furry artist draw faces, they don’t draw snouts outside of the side profile.

I think if you take everything about her design she probably looks like this >>3778290 if you draw her with a more defined face instead of the more anime like noseless/snoutless look. The stellar blade x Nikke collab is a good example on how much artstyle can change a character’s look as Stellar Blade has a semi-realistic 3D style while Nikke is straight up moe and the studio who designed these characters worked on their transition to 3D and vice versa.

Yes. As I said earlier it's the artstyle that omits a lot of facial details about her design just as the travelers aren't drawn with full on noses or Eve from Stellar Blade is drawn without a nose in Nikke's moe artstyle.

The thing here is that we have physical figures where that type of stylization is impossible to achieve and we know from notes in the artbook that the designers didn't want her having a human-looking face instead wanting her being depicted with a full on snout. The thing is that the people who modeled the figures gave her a bizarre small human-like mouth instead of a proper mouth for her face shape. We can see from the sketch that her mouth should be bigger and her hair smaller. If we take the figure and combine it with a proper mouth than it's not about Western artstyle or Japanese artstyle, it's about facial definition. That artwork is still very influenced by Octopath's original artstyle but the main difference is that she has a more defined face instead of having a minimally defined face. The artstyle makes her face look a little more human-like than it actually is but that's just a product of the style, we know based off the notes in the artbook that she was always intended to look like a hybrid rather than a more typical human-faced character with animal ears.

Well that first point is subjective. But that’s not what I’m trying to say and again Western art has nothing to do with it, Weatern doesn’t mean a more defined artstyle since some Japanese artists aren’t shy about drawing facial details. That art retains a lot of style elements from official artwork, the main difference is that official art goes for a simplified face, except when she’s drawn from the sides like the CotC anniversary art, while the fan art opts to define her muzzle. The fanart matches with the figure more because official art makes her face look really flat outside of profile view.

Again that is pretty normal in anime style art, go check out the /c/ Kemono thread for eastern furry examples. However that does mean that if you take everything about her design into account it’s going to differ from official artwork since a snout is more prevalent on the face than a human nose. Hence why I mentioned that artwork captures a more realistic look for Ochette than her more simplified anime inspired art work.

I did not enjoy the first one. It was fun for a little while but going one by one through the stories backtracking endlessly got old fast. Then the eventual "optional" completely start from scratch with a new party since having 2 guys with the same ability just forces a ton of micro managing in towns was the end for me. The problem with Octopath 2 is that it’s extremely generic. Most of your party members have generic roles and personality. You have generic shounen protagonist/guy with a good and bad side, generic token mascot/furry character, generic tough but good guy with a heart of gold, generic motherly figure, generic femme fatale, generic twink character with silver hair and a baby face. I think Osvald is the most unique as an autistic muscle wizard. Even most locations are generic as fuck, a Victorian inspired city, a whole island with a mix of Hawaiian culture and Mesoamerican ruins. Bland and generic stories with corny ass dialogue, another kill a god plot with a le church is bad plot.

OT2 is hard carried by its music.

Classes are not made equal. It's better to stack merchants or scholars for support or coverage or more. With Ochette's shit int stat, you're not going to do much damage with the spells unless you just want AOE elementals for breaking.
