Continued; in the verse in John you point out Jesus is referring to the spirit of Violence as just before his accusation, the Jews' intentions are made clear:
John 8:37, 40: "...but you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you... you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God."
This is the principle: Your spiritual "father" is whose desires you obey and whose nature you reflect. You are identified by your fruit; your actions and character.
Matthew 3:7-10 (John the Baptist to the Pharisees/Sadducees): "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
>produce fruit
John 8:39-44 (Jesus to those seeking to kill him): “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did... You are doing the works of your own father.”... “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires."
>Jesus referring to fruits
The Fruit of the Spirit (of God) is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
The Fruit of the Flesh (of the Adversary) is sexual immorality, impurity, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy. (Galatians 5:19-21)
If you really think about it, the New Testament is basically about how its not genetics that saves you but fruits, which is why gentiles are invited into the promise, as well as jews; but only based on true faith that produces works by Gods grace.
There is a prince of the air which is sort of like a military commander but for the most part, no, Peter was not literally Satan.
