The real issue is the quality of posts has decreased. Too many fucking phone posters and tourists. I don't recall it being like this even as early as 10 years ago, though maybe I'm just remembering things incorrectly.

I remember a thread from 2018(?) making a chart for important anime released in the 10s. The thread had actual discussion and somewhat interesting arguments. Different threads cover different things. A chapter dump thread for a new release is going to have a very high volume of posters in a very short time, likely hitting the bump limit within an hour or two and slowly reaching page 10 and then finally getting pruned.
But a general with no real theme for discussion sees a much slower post volume as there isn't anything earth-shattering to talk about. Personally, I prefer having a general to contain all the shitposting. The problem is the death of the board mono-culture. Used to be that there were things which basically everybody watched. So the whole board was involved with it, and everyone who was willing to make OC was exposed to it. Now everyone is watching their own things, and staying within the threads for those things, you might get one anon in the thread who cares enough to edit an image or draw something. And even if there is a thread with lots of good OC, you wouldn't know because you aren't watching it or exposed to the threads.

It stayed under the radar in 2011-12, but was the beginning of the end, yes. 2014-2015 was the final blow, point of chans was being relatively anonymous and unknown, and then they got massive mass media exposure which attacked one of their strongest pillars.


You say it was fresh, and that's exactly my point. I doubt if in the 2000s for the same reasons I started 4chan back then if received the 4chan of today if would take it as a "cool thing" or "just another website".

Almost all the qualities that made it different are gone and supressed, it's fairly dystopian surveillance databse tier now, no more freedom feels.

For threads/topics lasting 6 days, anywhere else on the internet is preferable really. Even oldschool internet chats are faster than that.
