Different threads cover different things. A chapter dump thread for a new release is going to have a very high volume of posters in a very short time, likely hitting the bump limit within an hour or two and slowly reaching page 10 and then finally getting pruned.
But a general with no real theme for discussion sees a much slower post volume as there isn't anything earth-shattering to talk about. Personally, I prefer having a general to contain all the shitposting. It's very similar to a "questions that don't deserve their own thread" thread that you sometimes see on other boards like /fit/, /biz/ or /k/
