But I still enjoyed the anime even if they absolutely butchered the begaritt arc and didn't even give Rudy a time to grieve.

Other fantasy series that tend to use the ranking systems for their adventuring tend to have the elite S-ranks get special benefit, like lavish guild houses and constant audiences to royal parties. Of course, in those other fantasy series, S-rank also tends to mean demigods and titan-killers who can cleave mountains and so.
In Mushoku Tensei though, ranks are just a reliability measure, now a power scale, and weak combatants like Geese can make it to S-rank, because he's otherwise good at this adventuring business and gets the job done, so there's many more S-ranked adventure in the world.
