I get we have a lot of nostalgia for the old Toei anime but it shouldn't be the end all be all for an adaption of DB. Most modern animators want to remake it and I say we let them.

I'm not even being harsh on the anime. If anything calling it a bad adaptation is underplaying how shit it is. Both as an adaptation and as a standalone. Toei's DBZ goes against Toriyama's strengths in almost every way. Toriyama has fast pacing, great and meaningful battle choreography, trims all fat (no, you're not going to get shitty filler scenes showing the Earthlings train in the afterlife while Goku is taking on Freeza just because - Toriyama understood that), and the characters behave in a refreshingly "down to earth" way. Toei turns that into a horribly paced mess with 3/10 fights (even a lot of the so called good ones like SS2 Goku vs Kid Buu are bad), nonsensical bloated plot meandering and horribly flanderized characters behaving as caricatures of themselves. Freeza is a good boss when written by Toriyama, and a retard shooting his guys all the time under Toei.

If you think DBZ is decent or more, you either never read the manga or didn't get what made it good. You're hitting peak satisfaction when buff men throw punches and lasers regardless of how good these punches look or anything that has to do with the writing and dialogues of said buff men. The worse part is that this is just the easy to spot parts. I'm expecting even the anime defenders to at least agree with me these parts are terrible. But if you pay even a little bit of attention to what you're reading/watching you'll see the stupidest, most infantilizing additions sprinkled everywhere. And to clarify, I'm not entirely against Toei DBZ, they can make good stuff. Good filler scenes/episodes, even good fight additions (Goku vs Cell...). But 95% of what you're getting is poisoned.

Personally, I'd like something more like a total rework of dragon ball.
Inspired by toriyamas style, but not a slave to it
Follow the story beats, but make it unique.
Something like the vampire hunter d manga. Borrow various elements from the books and movies.

Still start out with goku being orphaned, but weave his story more closely with piccolo, so they are more mirrors of each other.
Make the nameks have to flee because of the cold empire
Have the original namek not be ignorant of his alien origins, but when he splits into kami and piccolo, the memories get split too, leaving neither with the whole picture.
Piccolo goes on his rampage, is stopped, sealed, and the dragon ball plotline now starts with him getting unsealed. He becomes a bigger threat, but every time he makes a demon, it drains his power. He eventually has made too many henchmen, weakening him enough that Goku beats him. He then uses his last bit to "birth" piccolo jr, who grows up alone, in the wilderness, juxtaposed to goku, who spends the next years molded by kami.
Basically, weave the elements of nameks, saiyans, frieza, and red ribbon together more cohesively. You could even work in the majins as a bug threat which devastated planets, leaving them ripe for the cold empire to pillage.

A Dragon Ball remake would only matter to me if the lore was expanded, which wouldn't matter now because Toriyama is dead. Are making his manga a chore to read. Even if he could draw well it would still be a pretty big issue.

The best direction for the series to go in is animating Moro and Granolah, but giving Toei more liberties like they did with their version of Super's arcs. Meanwhile Toyo figures out how to incorporate Daima content into future Super arcs. It'd be nice to see the Demon Realm again but a version of it that's not faggy and anti-hype.

i'm gonna keep it a hundred-thousand-million with you. i don't know if it's time, or the way the gacha games and FighterZ glazed Super Saiyan Blue and Ultra Instinct, or how much i enjoyed Heroes, but i don't pop for original Super Saiyan the way i used to anymore. that's part of why i wasn't very interested in Daima. a remake of original DBZ without all the good, additional material the old showrunners added to enhance the story sounds like a colossal waste of time and resources. i don't think i would watch a single episode.

A remake would have to start with Raditz, since modern audiences are too fucking retarded to pay attention to the slow burn adventure series that Dragon Ball started as. Back before the series was about who had the bigger number and could shoot the bigger laser. It was about characters and their interactions with each other and the whimsical world that Toriyama built. It was a battle shonen with crazy superpowered characters, sure, but it also focused on grounded, relatable problems, like Nam entering the Strongest Under the Heavens Tournament to get water for his village, and the antagonistic, violent rivalry between the Crane and Turtle Schools. Characters had to use ingenuity and all their accumulated skill that we actually saw built up over the course of multiple arcs to overcome challenges instead of just screaming until their number got bigger.
All anyone cares about today is more hair colors. Because of that, a DB remake would be soulless and pointless, because it would ignore the series' roots.

I don't think DB needs a remake. A lot of criticism people have for DBZ is really Toei's doing since they were stretching the material very thin. Just like they did with One Piece. Even early in this thread people made a comment about the endless screaming and powering up shit, which aren't faults of the original manga. A good director and a high budget would make for a good remake of the source material. The issue is they should have done it 20 something years ago when they did Kai instead of a haphazardly smashed together edit.

You probably meant Viz Big editions. They're high-quality 3-in-1 volumes. "Perfection" might be a mistranslation of kanzenban, which is the premium re-release in Japan. Only some of those are available in English under the Viz Big label.

Anyway, go with the Viz Big editions if you want the full story, solid quality, and a good reading experience without needing to take out a mortgage. Also looks nice on the shelf. If you want eye candy and don't care about owning the whole story, Full Color is your side piece. Though, if you can read Japanese, the Full Color actually covers the entire manga.

People who said GT was canonised because Daima had Super Saiyan 4 was really weird. It's more like how when Broly and Gogeta appeared in Super, the idea is taken from some non-canon media but it doesn't mean said media became canon, Broly and Gogeta's appearances in Super are for all intents and purposes new versions of those characters, it's treated like they had never showed up before and the events that happened to the previous versions still make no sense even if they weren't.

If Super Saiyan 4 is meant to show that GT counts and even if we're meant to ignore Super, how does that make sense? You still get a similar problem to the "Why don't Goku, Gohan, Piccolo and Vegeta God/Blue/Instinct/Ego/Beast/Orange in GT?" thing you get if you trying harmonise Super and GT, except now it becomes "Why don't Goku use 4 before the Baby fight, why is it treated like he has never used it before, why did does it turn him into an adult in GT but not Daima and why are the unlocking conditions completely different?". Hell, at least with trying to harmonise Daima Super in that particular regard amount to explaining why Goku doesn't use 4 in a fight he lost almost right away and why Vegeta didn't use 3 in a fight he didn't intend to participate in and only did so on anger impulse.

I'd say SS1 because Toei probably wasn't sure Gohan still had 2 as a separate transformation when older (it wasn't even coined as 2 until Goku shows off against Buu). Even Toriyama wasn't considering how Gohan does use SS2 against Kibito but then against Dabura uses 1 because Tori changed his mind on how to depict Gohan becoming weaker.

this is not the right time for an anime remake. They should go for the live action route and adapt Toriyama's manga. But when I say live action I mean animated or cgi style live action. 5 or 10 episodes a season adapting the arcs in Dragon Ball's manga (1984 - 1995)

The Nuly sequel film will help save DB plus you have it as the lead into the new DBS season.
