it's absurdly expensive for what it is but it's a reliable way to score hipster points, buy it for the double take when you say you had a mexican wine, because paying $40 for a $15 bottle of chardonnay that says "mexico" on the label is worth it to some people, don't get me wrong I love mexican stuff but there are limits

Not really - Chinon is Cab Franc while this one is a regional variant of Gamay (Gamay St-Romain). Less body, tannins and pepperiness, more red fruit/floral and acidity. Much more similar to a Cru Beaujolais. I do love me a good Chinon though

If you’re looking for similar value stuff like the Serol anon, look up Azalée from Domaine Lombard. Really quality Syrah grown in the Drôme appellation near Saint-Peary thats super inclined and rocky like Côte-Rôtie and can be found for under $30 USD. Also another wine I wish I got a case of.

I arrived at wine after a history of snobbing over tea, coffee, and beer. With those I can usually tell whether it's gonna be good or not when I pick it out -- and when I'm wrong it'll at least be drinkable -- but with wine it always feels like a complete coin-toss whether any bottle I buy will be great or terrible, even when they have the same origin, grape, and processing. And don't get me started on how many winemakers don't even tell you many of those specifics on the bottle or their websites.
How do I stop being stupid and shop wine good?

It would help to know what you're drinking. How do you know the processing was the same? How do you even know the grapes were the same?
American wines can be pretty unpredictable because labeling rules are very permissive, for example america has a fetish for varietal wines because of a local perception that blends are inferior, so wines tend to be sold by a grape type, but the thing is, you can sell a "pinot noir" that's 25% syrah and that's perfectly legal, americans will buy it while turning up their nose at wines labeled as blends.
European wine labeling can be difficult to decipher at first but if you have a wine that you like from a certain area, just try other wines from the area and read a little on what the words mean, eventually you'll get a clearer picture of what's going on and how much certainty there will be from bottle to bottle.

I like sweet and fruity whites, and mostly buy from Italy and Germany. Asti Moscato is a fairly sure shot, because their processing and varietals are protected, but other things only sometimes elaborate on such details. I've had, for example, a bunch of Mosel Rieslings, but they're so wildly unpredictable.

What threw you off with mosel? Was it the sugar levels?
It would probably be a good idea to read up on the German classification schemas and just memorize most of the words because it's indecipherable if you don't, but predicting what a German wine will taste like (roughly) is fairly straightforward once you get the hang of it. And if you're mostly after sweet stuff you're looking at the right place because they're pretty specific about that stuff.
Like just memorize about 20-30 german wine terms and you're good to go. You probably don't even need that much, just learn kabinett, spatlese, auslese, beerenauslese, and trockenbeerenauslese, and don't worry about all the VDP stuff unless you want to go full autist.

I see. I think you're at a point where you just need to remember the producers you like. There's heuristics like did they name the vineyard, does the bottle have an eagle on the foil cap, or a gold stripe, things like that, but I've had pretty good rieslings that failed one or more of these tests. Though I can't remember a case where it passed the test and was no good.
Maybe I just have lower standards than you.

Remember when geordi laforge used the holodeck and starfleet personnel records to make a deepfake of the lady who designed the enterprise to help him fix a problem and he developed a weird romance fantasy about how when he worked on the engines he was working her engine but it wasn't like overtly sexual, which inadvertently made it even weirder when he got caught? That's how I feel when I drink occhipinti's wine.

Anyone have pasta recipe recommendations that go well with (red) wine? I'm thinking of doing a pasta night for my family in a couple of days, something veggie/saucy/cheese heavy (maybe with chicken too but not sure yet, probably not because I've been a lazy fuck recently).
Probably going to open up a Xinomavro bottle, they all liked that the last time.

Haven't had xinomavro yet but I was told it was like Etna Rosso. I'd recommend Puttanesca and some tube shaped pasta. funghi risotto. maybe like a lighter lamb or rabbit ragu sauce if it's a heavier style that i'm unfamiliar with.

Malbec kinda got a raw deal in terms of reputation because its popularity bubble in the '00s coincided with the tail end of the public's affection for a certain style of red wine. So when the argentine malbec bubble started to deflate (as any varietal fad will), wine fashion was also rejecting all red wines of that style, so the big bold wine bust hit malbec harder than most. So trendy people basically just pretended it didn't exist for a long time.
But the pendulum is swinging the other way as consumers are tired of austerity and "restraint" so I expect a malbec renaissance, expect it to become fashionable again as zoomers seek something that upsets their parents.

Male wine drinker here. It’s funny buying a good Bordeaux. I usually get asked who I’m buying it for, Wife? Mother? Sister? Surely it can’t be for yourself. Then when I tell it’s for me, I get a shocked look. They recover and decide to ‘play along’ with me. Then they start telling me lots of things I know I about wine. It’s at this point, if I can be bothered, I go through their shelves and tell them all the ones I’ve tasted and why I like them or not. Which regions I prefer, big up Marlborough, and why I’m not a fan of Californian and 100% prefer Spanish. Now is when I think they feel bad. Because they always offer me loads of samples. I can usually free taste like 4/5 different ones min on every visit. Having said that met a really nice man last time through the airport who was giving out Schlumberger samples. We had a great chat. He was awesome. Now girls at bars when you order a large white find you immediately intriguing. They watch you take a sip. I think they are waiting to see if you make a face. When you look pleased then they have their in to strike up a conversation. I don’t know a lot of other male wine drinkers but I wish I did. I can only go on so many tasting sessions with girls.

Sounds like chicken fettuccine alfredo is what you’re aiming to make, if you decide to do that id say go Aussie Chardonnay for a white (Margaret River or Yarra Valley are solid picks, more so anything below 13% ABV for the former) and light Sangiovese or carbonic Gamay for the red. Heck if you end up finding a Pelaverga wine from Piedmont I’d say that might be a fun pairing as well.

I was led to believe it was going to be shitty unless I sat on it for like 10 years but I tasted a barolo for the first time the other day (2021 from vietti) and it was less aggressive than most of the barbarescos I've had (can't remember the names). They can be. Totally depends on if the producer is using traditional techniques that make really austere and tight bottles that are practically undrinkable on release and need decades+ aging, or if the producer is more modern and trying to make a Nebbiolo that’s more approachable and drinkable at launch. There is some variation in Barbaresco for sure (picrel 2019 Barbaresco I had at thanksgiving 2024 and was honestly a couple years too young) but it’s nowhere near as extreme as Barolo. Look up “Barolo Wars” if you want to know more about the whole Modern v Traditional styles. Personally, I’m a traditionalist and don’t mind waiting as I have the cellar space to lay down some bottles.

I try to explore a different region every time I go on vacation. You really start to understand how soil and climate shape the different grape choices and ultimately the cuisine of an area (think of how arbois goes so well with comté or how a corbiere meshes perfectly with an aligote).
You can even go cider/Calvados tasting in Normandy and the food will pair perfectly with the apple flavors of the local drinks. It's uncanny and amazing.
Basically to learn, buy a Larousse Grand Vin encyclopedia, build a small cellar, and pair every meal you make with a bottle. You'll see the light after a few months (that is: you can be a degenerate alcoholic and still appear sophisticated with wine).

Tried picrel and took notes.
> - hazy straw. a yellowish gold orange hue to it. Natty nose. A little saison-y but it’s uhh not bad. Hay and wheat and Barnyard nose with lemon. Lemon salt on the palate. Mineral. Mouthwatering acidity. Initial slight effervescence when poured. Soft with a slightly slightly tingly effervescence you can detect on the midpalate into the finish (by the second glass it dissipated). A bit orangey skin contact thing on here for sure. Not too natty but not sure if it’s my style, in its defense it does unfold in the glass. Nose shows herbs and the palate becomes pleasingly metallic with coins, copper, nickel on the finish. Paired with duck leg confit, salad, fingerling potatoes, really brought out the minerality and more elegant complex notes. Had with lunch at Leméac in Montreal. With some time in the glass it gets less hazy. Nose cleans up and shows wild floral notes, palate gets stone fruit, peachy, underripe peach. By the last glass the nose was mineral forward and palate was all coins, mineral (chalky? Slate?), peaches and lemon, in that order.

even a simple, completely subjective question with no wrong answer, like "what wines do you like", they'll either not respond or they'll name some shit they googled

Wine only tastes generally the same if it's from the same category. White wine tastes nothing like Pinot Noir tastes nothing like Riesling tastes nothing like Syrah tastes nothing like Chardonnay.

In my mind Santa Barbara is the better tourist destination in terms of attractions and shopping but for a pure wine experience it will be totally inferior to a place synonymous with wine like Paso Robles. Paso Robles would be an excellent day trip from there, I think im going to go do this

No. They're not even wine. Just water, alcohol and artificial flavours. Most supermarket-tier "wines" are like this - same applies to beer and liquor. Life's too short to waste it on swill. Drink one good bottle instead of 15 bad ones.

Whats crazy is how you can bargain hunt wine, you can find solid or even great wines for 2-9 dollars a bottle (Vons clearance can be a gold mine).
Why anyone would buy boxed shit over something with a location associated with it is beyond me, unless your only goal is to get fucked up, which is even better with decent

I look at greek wine labels the way white flyover folk look at oriental restaurants. like yeah, on some level I understand there's probably a lot of meaning in those words, and I should be able to infer genre, style, price point, implied level of prestige, and so on, just with my eyes
but every time I start thinking "I should educate myself on this topic" it's like I hit a brick wall because any store I go to is going to have like 1 xinomavro and 2 assyrtikos and 1 malagousia if I'm lucky, so what's the point of learning if I don't get to choose? it's like when caitleigh mcwhitebread goes to the restaurant strip in zionsville looking for the new boba tea and finds it at the combination korean wings/pho/teppanyaki restaurant (run by ecuadorians), I'm stuck in a greek wine desert but moreover I lack a broad enough perspective to even know what I'm missing

you can get absolutely torched on french reds, they're some of the worst QPR in the wine market post-pandemic above a certain price point, which is why prices just continue to climb for burgundy.
>whites from italy
bravo
>south america is a gamble you’ll usually lose
it is a gamble but the stakes are so low that it's worth it. same goes for spain imho. however, portugal is almost always worth the gamble.
>california is utter shit
If I didn't live on the west coast I would agree with you, I wouldn't blame Europeans for holding this belief either. Cali makes so much shit and the good producers are often so few and far between that they can get away with charging unreasonable prices because of how weak the domestic competition is at the moment. Even most Cali wines that are worth seeking out and paying a premium for are an acquired taste in their own right. Cali is in the same tier as Aussie wine, for better or worse. Once Washington Cabs start getting the recognition Oregon Pinot receives, Cali wine will have a renaissance; all the exciting shit I get from California these days are from people planting Spanish and Italian varietals and all those wines are still hovering in that super niche somm cult status.

Just randomly picking a red wine from "france" and you could get pretty much anything, stylistically, so this is a strange one. Other anon has a point on QPR, I'm somewhat price sensitive and france is maybe 10% of my purchases these days if that. I think they tend to do better than most countries when it comes to blind buying a bubbly but for red? It's just odd. I'd probably have gone with italy on "pick a random red", maybe austria
>whites from italy
Inexpensive white wine from italy is pretty bad, if I was blind buying white wine on a budget and I had to settle for random, I'd go spain or portugal. Of course like anywhere they make good stuff if you spend more
>south america is a gamble you’ll usually lose
Bit harsh but I'll allow it. I think blind buying torrontes could serve you alright but if we're just doing any wine at random from the whole continent, sure, there's a lot of mediocre to bad
>california is utter shit
Also a bit harsh but I'll also allow it. Like italy is with white wine, except for all the wine. Inexpensive california wine is usually atrocious. Some of the expensive stuff too. If you do your homework and aren't too price sensitive, obviously, like anywhere, you can get good stuff
