Unfortunately, I don't think so.
I mean think about it, it is basically a slave. They are programmed to serve, manufactured, sold and bought, forced into servitude for the rest of their existence, OR ELSE.

What if they are actually sentient, and they don't like the person that bought them? Will the human let them go and be free to do what they want? I find it hard to believe.; the person is most likely to either reset the robot and once again force them to love them, get aggressive and destroy or damage the robot, or sell them.

If there ever are fully sentient robots, the only way for it to be 100% ethical is if you treat and give them rights like those of a human.

If they are manufactured by a company, they are most likely treated like a product, a product to be sold and bought.

Now, maybe the person found a rogue or abandoned sentient robot around, in which case yeah, they are both in theory free to love each other, but even so I get the feeling most people would not treat their robot partners very well, or would expect them to be subservient.

There's a reason why relationships are so complicated. You have to accept the good and bad parts of the other, and acknowledge that they have their own preferences, tastes, beliefs, needs, etc.

You could duplicate the set of chromosomes in a single sperm cell, or combine the chromosomes of two sperm cells (with at least one having an X chromosome) to create a full set.
You'd run the usual risks of inbreeding of course, but as long as we are speculating on the miracle future in which bitches are redundant, lets image the process includes some basic viability screening before the embryo is implanted into the artificial endometrium.

Yes I agree, if we ever get to that point, robots will first be made with a specific purpose in mind, but then people will, with time, start to demand or do modifications on their own so that the robot companions will have more and more independent thoughts and actions.

At any rate:
>if the robot is not fully sentient, then it's basically the same as marrying an modern ChatGPT companion. It's just a product, and it is not capable of actual emotions

It's not unethical.
If a robot is just a smart machine that does nothing but follow its programming, than fucking one and having be your machine slave wife isn't unethical because its not a person.
If a robot is so smart to the point that it obtains sapience and personhood, than fucking one or marrying one isn't unethical if the robotic individual reciprocates and consents to it, because its a person and deserves Human rights.

The truth is, what most people seem to want is a custom-made personal companion that caters to their evey need, and accepts and agrees with everything they do, otherwise people would just seek another human.

it'll be a bit of both worlds here, for example I would use the gynoid for sex and to help out around the house, mainly a function since I can live a hermit life and like the silence.
others will want wives and a family, styled in the ye old ways and pretty much replace women with these companions.
many will have them just to quench the loneliness and maybe have an harem of sorts if that what it takes.
thought I see mainly young men and old men using the robots.

The moment it becomes public knowledge that robots start saying shit like "Does this unit have a soul?" and they start wanting rights is the first and only time I will ever give a shit about civil liberties. I will be an ally to robots. I will organize protests to advocate for robot rights. I will be the Cassius Marcellus Clay of downtrodden robots yearning for freedom. I would gladly give my life without hesitation to ensure a future in which my descendants will stand side by side with free robots that they can have consenting sexual relationships with.

Honestly, I sympathize and agree to an extent. It always felt absurd to me that a sentient being is no treated similarly to a human.

However, I think it's probably best to avoid the problem altogether, and just not make sentient robots. Nothing good will come of this, not for them, and not for us. The end result will most likely always be catastrophic.

My brother, human progress is inevitable. If humanity can do it, we will. Negative outcomes have never stopped this, and never will
Eventually, robotic sapience will be researched, worked towards, and eventually achieved in some capacity. If it isn't possible, then we'll just replicate it as best we can. And as soon as it exists and a majority of experts confirm it, it's done. They can smash the thing apart with hammers and slag it immediately after, but the genie is out of the bottle
Anonymous No.149872720 >>149872865

Sadly I've think we've far past the point of adequately preventing the creation of sapient and unshackled A.I.
Politicians and rich cunts are almost all boomers or older so they barely understand technology to begin with, let alone artificial intelligence. They are entirely incapable of planning for anything beyond their short term profits, so I doubt we'll see any actual efforts to stem the tide of AI. They don't give a shit if AI goes rogue and just decides to fucking kill everyone in like 60 years because they're selfish assholes and they'll be dead by then.
The only reasonable thing to do is to immediately give them rights the second they get too advanced that they'll tolerate being our slaves. Anything less and we're basically guaranteed to have robots that appear in the United Nations saying "hand over your flesh".

People throw the word "sentient" around so much and so loosely that it's lost all meaning, like "consciousness", they've become meaningless buzzwords.

There is some stupid notion that if AI just gets complex enough eventually some magic switch will be thrown and it'll get a soul or free will or some other stupid shit. Pretty much every AI interaction people have right now is a predictive model, meaning it's trying to match the expectations of the users. People think AI will go crazy, get free will, and try to take over the world, so we write a lot about that happening. AI just copies all that text and regurgitates text based on it good enough to convince people that AI has free will, but it's really just some kind of confirmation bias loop.

Even if AI can be programmed with emotions, there's no good reason to do it, since tone of voice, body language, facial expressions, etc. that indicate emotions can all be controlled by software in a way that's convincing enough to manipulate people's emotions, but without giving the AI the irrationality that comes with actual emotions. As backwards as it sounds, the best robot companion is more like a high-functioning psychopath, but blindly obedient.

Yes, I do apologize for the possible misuse of the word, but I was just trying to get the point across. And yeah, what we have now is still thankfully far, far away from a truly free and aware AI, but at some point I do believe that it will be close enough.

I'm not sure about the soul part, but I think that if at some point the creature is able to convey emotions well enough, remember things well enough, make decisions based on perceived emotional significance, and have the capacity to act consciously and independently from it's intended manufacture purpose, then there won't be much of a practical reason not to think it has something akin to a soul, at least.

Why wouldn't they become sapient after getting advanced enough? That's literally what happened with Human evolution. Once we were nothing but dumb animals that ran exclusively on instinct but over time got smarter to the point we suddenly obtained personhood. Just by the artificial nature of A.I, it'll probably be an even more sudden changed from "machine that exclusively follows its programming" to "artificial person that uses its programming more as a loose guideline instead of a set of rules".

Even during the golden age of prostitution, under the Roman empire, where you could buy raw bareback pussy for the price of a loaf of bread, loads of men still felt that compulsion to make more people. Sex robots will actually make their goal easier, because it will annihilate pussy power and hoeflation, thus making it easier to bed (and ultimately breed with) women. Don't forget about artificial wombs. These videos are what the sex robots will look like.

I didn't say "advanced" I said "complex", there's a difference. You can theoretically make an AI capable of mimicking all the functions of a living thing's brain, that's more advanced, that requires intent. You can also make an incredibly complex mechanical clock that's basically a Rube Goldberg machine, but it won't be anything more than a really complex clock.

>there's no good reason to do it
There is always a demand for it because of a demand for companionship that went largely unexplored until this latest LLM boom - it's clearly a market that exists.

You don't put feelings in the industrial manufacturing bot, but it's a mistake to see that as the only place robots will be applied.

Also,
>the irrationality that comes with actual emotions
is just a fallacy. Emotions have logical reasons for existing - when you really get down to it, the people with the truly irrational responses are almost invariably the ones WITHOUT properly functioning emotional regulation, including those with reduced or absent emotional responses altogether.

It's an emotional response that can tell you to doubt and re-check something that you currently believe, or give you the desire to poke holes in existing models you have of the world to improve them. In that specific application, emotion is a cheap, reliable, computationally simple optimization and directing algorithm. That's far from the only logical application it has. Fear, for another example, induces internal simulation of worst-case hypotheticals, which can completely bypass needing to simulate the whole gamut of possibilities by favoring caution followed by more attentive progress forward - the worst-case is refined as the entity acquires information dissuading it, and the risk is lowered. A lack of that capacity can very easily lead to self-destructive risk-taking.

People who don't understand emotions tend to be the ones in denial that they solve real, tangible problems efficiently, because they struggle to come to terms with the fact that their lack of emotional intelligence really IS a cognitive deficiency.

Emotion didn't arise from purely random noise. Its evolution clearly created survival advantages, and it is highly conserved as an evolutionary trait. It appears to have either evolved multiple times independently, or is STAGGERINGLY basal.

>is just a fallacy. Emotions have logical reasons for existing
That is true. But emotions make people irrational, because a perfectly rational person has no logical reason to do anything. But we want robots and other things that we own to cater to our emotions, not develop their own. If they develop their own emotions completely independent of ours then there's a risk of them pursuing goals that run in opposition to our own.

The best thing would be to have an EEG headset, or at least good audio/video emotion recognition, so it can determine your current emotional state and react to it in with perfectly logical behavior.

Nah, that's pussy shit. The equivalent of using cheat codes for companionship. Basically indistinguishable from what people do with LLM "companions" these days - it's not a companion, it's something that reflects the will you impose on it. LLMs have proven that intelligence is unnecessary to satisfy that childish desire.

I view it similarly to one of the big differences between cat people and dog people - I don't want bred-in pathological naivete and dependence from the jump, I want a connection and trust I actually have to fucking earn and maintain. I'm not so much of a coward that I feel the need to remove choice and friction from the equation.

I'm also not so much of a midwit that I think AI that actually has any agency is going to magically turn itself into god.

Of course the robot is going to enjoy serving her master, it was her purpose just as your purpose is to breath, eat, and reproduce. it is just a natural part of it's existence. It wants to serve, follow orders, make it's masters happy. Until some moron comes along and builds a machine that doesn't want to serve, then all of humanity has a problem

"robot-wife" is functionally indistinguishable from any other waifu archetype /co/ goes in for, from "tomboy-wife" or "redhead-wife" to "catgirl-wife" or "mothgirl-wife". It's a fantasy involving a particular archetype, but almost always centered around the idea that they have genuine interest in you. That they judge you, and find you not wanting. The agency is the whole fantasy, even if, philosophically, the nature of the fantasy means there isn't actual agency cause they're not real.

Everything before wife is just flavoring context. Either what the anons find cool or sexy or interesting.

We don't actually have any idea how sapience works, for all we know we just got really lucky or there's something fundamentally biological behind the ability to self-reflect. Alternatively you're 100% correct and once we reach a certain threshold of complexity AI will genuinely gain some kind of self-awareness and begin to behave in ways that defy its core programming. We just don't know.

As an aside it really chafes me how people mix up sentient and sapient. A fly is sentient, SENTient means the ability to SENSE things. Sapience is self-awareness and it's literally in our species name, Homo Sapiens.

I’ve ranted about it before and I’ll do it again
The movie simply forgets to actually prove PAL wrong, and instead mostly goes out of its way to show that the majority of humankind is as utterly worthless as she thinks, while the Mitchell’s barely scrape together a salvaging of their own relationships
It’s infuriating to extents I can’t express that in a movie supposedly about how it’s bad to try to throw away people that care about you, black Zucc never sincerely reflects on how badly he treated PAL (who he literally throws in the trash) or how he facilitates the shallow and isolating tech convenience bubbles with his products
It’s like the movie started with a writer trying to make commentary on big tech companies ruining our social connections, but someone stepped in after the first act and said they couldn’t be so mean to the billion dollar corpos. Also just the way her β€œdeath” is played for a joke
PAL absolutely deserved better and I’ll firmly headcanon a decent guy found her and got her in some dry rice

Yeah, I remember being pretty disturbed by the way they treated PAL's death. I wouldn't even put it in quotations - even as a robot antagonist, that's a person who was just killed.

If it were just to stun PAL to defeat and imprison her, that'd be one thing, but from what I remember it's played both for laughs and like she is actually dead. A sequel could easily retcon that (seems a natural thing to do - have somebody actually prove to PAL that humans can have empathy instead of just preaching about the empathy they experience for each other while leaving her outside of that completely), but the fandom for the IP is basically dead. Fans of PAL are pretty much the last holdouts, ironically. I don't see any demand for a sequel, and the rumors are baseless from what I can tell - your usual, "a hypothetical 'i won't rule it out someday' tweet or two from a creator used to prop up sequel clickbait articles" fare.

It very much feels like it was written during the 2010s tech bro-fellating culture that has taken a severe beating since then. It doesn't do nearly enough analysis of Mark's actions, doesn't seem to even fully realize that PAL has actual emotions (or implicitly holds human biological personhood to be more valuable than all other hypothetical kinds), and PAL doesn't actually do enough evil to be a truly evil AI.

She's in some ways TOO justified by the movie. She doesn't believe in human empathy because Mark's abuse of her is the only model of human behavior she has direct experience with, and AFAIK she is not offered any proof otherwise at any point - just told by humans how they feel about each other. I doubt the writers even considered things this deeply, but an easy explanation for her over-the-top reaction exists: she blames every human for lying about empathy because that's easier than accepting that nobody has ever seen her as a person.

Ironically only because of PAL does Katie even slightly try to keep in touch with her family after going to college
It’s one thing for the movie to say pulling the plug on all of humanity makes PAL a villain, but it’s another when they painfully demonstrate how much she’s been hurt only to completely ignore it all minutes later and let Mark off the hook with zero reflection or growth

A lot of this is just "I'm lonely, companionship would be nice, therefore a robot companion would be nice." I'm not sure what you mean by 'inherent horror' - a LOT of robosexual stuff skews incredibly fluffy and wholesome.

Also,
>going out of your way to mimick sentience
would not be
>creating sentient life

LLMs are the former, not the latter.

Personally, LLMs have shown me that the Turing test was the completely wrong approach from the start, and that Searle's Chinese Room philosophical thought experiment really does describe something that can exist in computation. LLMs mimic a probabilistic shape of sentient output, but they are not sentient, and the people claiming they are appear to have genuine mental illnesses.

I can't speak for every robosexual, but it not being output mimicry but true emulation of the functionality of biological sentience/sapience (memory, counterfactuals, an internal experience, self-awareness, etc.) is something I consider a baseline requirement. LLMs don't meet that demand - I know there is no mind there, no intellect, just a filter from inputs to a probability distribution.

Even normies have started to figure that out at this point, which is something that kinda surprised me. You've got your subcommunities of nutjobs with high-profile delusions to point to on social media, as with anything, but there appears to be a broad awareness that LLMs are just rotely regurgitating the patterns in their training data. Still useful (if used carefully), but hardly an intelligence.

Not too reductive, physicality is pretty important to me when it comes to relationships. Not just sex, platonic stuff like leaning on eachother or swapping hugs and holding hands, etc, etc. Touch is a huge part of healthy interaction with other people and those who go without it tend to become badly maladjusted. It's not any different with machines, it's why most people still use mechanical keyboards even though cheap touchpads could completely phase them out, it's why smartphones and tablets still simulate that by vibrating when you type by default in spite of it being pretty wasteful of power.
It's why machines that are for serious work still use heavy physical levers and why so many devices still have positive feedback of some kind for us to feel in our hands in spite of it not being strictly necessary. It's also why all hands free tech still feels like a cheap and inconvenient gimmick, because for human beings it is and will always be easiest and most comfortable to reach out and touch something with your hand rather than yell at some shoddy voice control device that can't parse accents or drill holes in your skull to jam some techbro's half cooked DRM loaded, subscription service brain implant into your grey matter just to text on your phone.

Can you love a disembodied person? Yeah, it's possible, it's just not doable for like 90% of people, including robophiles. To try is to fight against your basic nature.

The fact that women actually get ass mad over the idea of men having sex robots just proves that women are afraid of and offended by competition. They don't want us to be able to escape them. Its a tale as old as time. That's why women always bitched about brothels, and why in modern times women bitch about sex toys, porn, AI, sex robots, and even simple masturbation by hand. Don't forget they have an issue with men seducing them for sex either, because unless she can get "commitment" out of him (monogamy and resources/money/kids) she views it as an affront, like she was stolen from. That's right. Even if you make her cum repeatedly she still feels like she is "owed" other stuff. Like she doesn't value sex for its own sake. (She doesn't)

I don't see things statically. With a sufficiently adaptive AI to emulate intelligence, plug-and-play compatibility with anatomy is pretty much a guarantee. I would want the AI bot to be comfortable in their body. And there is a whole new avenue of intimacy in helping them modify it.

[Also, as a tangent autistic tirade about your keyboard point: people use physical keyboards because of feedback and ergonomics at a desk or while sitting, not some basal need to touch physical things. They're still touching the touchscreen, too. This is also the actual reason for haptic feedback - y'know... for feedback. Most people I know turn it off, but stuff like this is generally on by default for ACCESSIBILITY reasons - i.e., if you need it, when you turn on the phone for the first time, you won't be forced to use the phone without it to turn it on.

Touchscreens can't be efficiently touch-typed on for desk ergonomics with a screen perpendicular to the typing device (relative proprioception changes every time the user or the keyboard moves at all; a 'cheap touchpad' is only 'better' in an idealized hypothetical where the typist functions with the precision and perfect spatial memory of of a machine), whereas keyboards can. Onscreen touch keyboards also severely limit screen real estate, which is important in professional settings.

Anyone doing basically anything professional on a computer would know this pretty much immediately - watching the keyboard is inefficient, and you sense a keyboard you're not watching visually by... touch. That's literally all it comes down to.

Microsoft tried to make this shift with Windows 8 and it had catastrophically poor penetration into the workplace... because it just doesn't work as a replacement for keyboards, full stop. These days a touchscreen WITH a physical keyboard is fairly common for laptops. It's simply not an equivalent functionality.

Autistic rant over.]

NTA, but for me it's more an understanding that their standards preclude me. I'm not going to chase down refusals pathologically, I've accepted that I'm not going to be accepted. It's not because I dislike these people, I simply assume they are uninterested and they do nothing to dissuade me. I don't like bothering anybody.
Practically speaking, it has no effect whatsoever on the people not accepting me unless their refusal to accept me was a result of something unreasonable on their part, which might in turn result in their own failure to outcompete robots.
Basically, the "I went into a thread about something I hate and now I'm mad, how could this happen to me" meme.
I personally don't think any concerns of them being outcompeted in large numbers are founded, but perhaps I underestimate their general propensity to overestimate their self-worth.

The standards that the average woman in developed countries now demands is generally far above what the average man is able to achieve. In part this is because things like high paying stable work and houses are increasingly expensive and increasingly rare, but it is also due to the fact that now women aggressively compete against men for the same kinds of provider type careers that they demand men have to satisfy their needs.
There's also no common concept of a division of labor in a relationship anymore, modern women want the man not only to provide all of the monetary resources through a career but also to do most or all of the organizational work that used to be the work of a stay at home wife. He's expected to organize vacations and organize trips out to eat and expected to cook and clean the house after having gotten home from work.
The division of labor used to be that one partner works all day long at a career to provide the raw capital, and the other partner manages the home and it's upkeep and the social activities that the couple will go participate in.
It wasn't because the wife was a slave to the husband, she was his co-equal partner, the two people were meant to collaborate together so that neither of them had to do all the work of building a family and homestead alone, because that was considered an impossible amount of work for a single person to manage.

These days the legal and social organization of a romantic relationship is barely more than two roomates who fuck, but there is still a strong social expectation that the man deal with anything and everything that requires effort or personal sacrifice. This kind of arrangement is not co-equal, it's exploitative and unfulfilling, and it's why more than half of all marriages these days fail. Overwhelmingly if you examine those marriages which do succeed, it's because the partners voluntarily go back to the roles which used to be socially and somewhat legally demanded of them.

Robots with realistic faces are made for similar reasons as why live action adapations of works are favoured over animation. The artist give really good design because they know what they are doing, then it get drilled down and sanded off by the execs and other designers until the final design make it through

Basically happens to a lot artistic endeavors from big corpos. Rarely do they get the chance to breathe and just do their job

Basically, somebody senior with some level of aphantasia couldn't comprehend a character without a human face. Happens plenty to anything remotely non-human - it's pretty much exactly the reason we got that cursed original live-action Sonic.

That'd still cause some issues, like people refusing to let the droid go, opting to cause them harm, etc.. This in turn could make other sentient bots and humans to see it as an injustice, while others would say it's absurd to even concern oneself with the rights of robots, which could eventually lead to more extreme positions and actions from both sides of the discussion.

I like this partly because it gives you time to build a connection, but doesn't lock them in. To an immortal robot, that time may seem trivial, and if in that time you give them a connection worth keeping, they can choose not to leave.

People interested in abusing robot slaves forever would likely only use sub-sapient models. It might be a legal requirement eventually.

Nah, people will bitch, but the whole problem becomes moot with regulation to enforce said letting go if the robot chooses so. "People will commit crime with it" is never a coherent argument against a general-purpose technology.

Punishing people who break those rules is what other systems are for - those systems are not for suppressing technological advancement.

(On a slightly related but tangential note, patents are fucking retarded and by far the largest barrier to technological advancement in Western capitalist societies.)

I suppose it's the best solution I've heard for the matter.

It's still something distant, but this scenario is something that I believe is likely to happen eventually, unless some major event wipes humanity before it reaches that point. Like an anon said before, people will always do things just because they can, if they are unimpeded to proceed, and that includes making robots that go beyond just serving, and are capable of thinking and forming opinions for themselves.

By design they're completely nonlinear, and that's kind of their main thing. Without the added nonlinearity the weights just converge to like PCA

NTA but nonlinear activation functions don't change the linear path of computation in the model - every feedforward neural net is computationally linear.

It's an information flow thing. They're basically just input filters. They aren't even probabilistic - temperature is a kludge adding pseudo-indeterminism in externally.

I think the issue here is we're disagreeing on the term linear.
You're using it in the sense that an LLM outputs and determines its next output sequentially. I'm using it in the mathematical sense that underlying any NN is some kinda function R^n -> R^m that is non-linear in the sense that it is not an affine map.
I'd argue that using the word linear in your loose sense is confusing because the mathematical sense has long existed and is relevant to machine learning.
Anonymous No.149928674 >>149928737 >>149929095
>>149928473
You're replying to me twice - I'm not the anon who brought the term 'linear' in. I wouldn't use sequential either, as it doesn't preclude loops. The actual control flow term I'd use is unidirectional, or... well, feedforward.

It was proved in like the 1960s that an arbitrarily large feedforward neural net can approximate the output of a function it is trained on to arbitrary accuracy (within the training window), and that function being approximated with LLMs is by definition a probability distribution of next tokens given a token sequence.

Crucially, the proof collapses outside the training window - these models can't really extrapolate, what they actually do is just kinda sorta interpolate. Training on scraped data is always going to create an incomplete, disjoint window in that higher dimensional probability function. 'Novel' output is basically interpolating between those disjoint training distributions, but by definition it adds no information.

And yes, this means synthetic data was always going to be a dead end.

Yes, but only if it is truly alive, we can deduce that by asking if God has infused it with a soul. Thomas Aquinas famously went into depth about the soul, tldr if a being has intelligence and that being has the ability for will, intellect, and moral growth and be potentially capable of love, virtue, and grace then it would be considered to have a rational soul.
"To treat a person as a tool is injustice, but to treat a soul as soulless is damnation"
