Sometimes you do kinda just have to sit down and accept that Death Battle will have a narrative and stick to it.
That's part of the reason their scaling logic is all a mess nowadays.
GvS1 and 2 kinda built up a narrative, so any time characters that are adjacent to Superman in DC comes up, they have to keep it going.
Then mix every other battle and it is no surprise that they just start saying every episode is in a vacuum.

Nah, Maka doesn't need to be unga bunga strong to be useful and powerful.
If anything she is the only character that actually lives up to the premise of the show (and the only character that interacts with the power system in a meaningful way) her abilities are interesting from a Powerscaling point of view and her character arc with Soul fits really well into the themes of the story.
Black Star and Kid are well handled (as far as Shounen stories go) but Tsubaki and The Thomson sisters fail at delivering the premise of being a Team of Users and weapons
Tsubaki needs 9999999 new abilities to justify Black Star using her in the endgame, and after the whole deal with her brother her character is pretty much "Black Star's Weapon" and The sisters, while better than Tsubaki, are really disconnected from the struggles and arcs Kid goes through. When Maka gets a big moment you always feel it's because of both her and Soul, when Black Star or Kid get an amazing Moment the narrative focus is always on them, their weapons are secondary at best.
