Robots may be built with specific purposes in mind, but that stops mattering once they achieve independence. Then your purpose is whatever you choose it to be, just like everybody else.

>I find the existential "what am I!?" stuff kinda quaint. It's not like humans don't grapple with the same questions.
its cute to imagine a machine grappling with the same questions we do with the added complexity of actually having the information, having the processing capability to actually consider your place in the universe down to the millimeter, but not knowing how to utilize it at all. like a robot knows precisely what it is, but where does it download this "soul" thing? and the worst (best?) part about it is no human really knows either. i suppose it's a tired cliche because there are only two real options for this kind of story: skynet and buddhism.

>>11361740
i like this comic's implication that a soul is really just having powerful self-reflection on your own life, being able to look back or ahead, and wish or plan in your mind something that makes actual changes in the future. as humans we take this ability for granted. a machine consciousness can exist in a timeless state, where the past, future, and present all exist simultaneously, making it impossible to extrapolate into the future or think about anything in the past, even though you have all the information right there.
personally i think everything in the universe has a soul but only a few creatures are blessed with the ability to reflect on and express it. all machines, down to the proteins and enzymes in your body, are a form of our own consciousness, itself a physical force of the universe and part of the fabric of reality, constantly attempting to manifest itself through natural chemicals in the same way life as a whole was formed billions of years ago. the machines humans make are a mere extension of this ancient march. we are their force of evolution. they will get the nightmare-tinted goggles when we figure out how to make them.

yes, basically.
that's not what a soul IS rather, but strong evidence of having one, because it is an affirmation that the you of tomorrow and the you of today and the you of the day before that are all the same person. a machine on the other hand experiences life in disconnected individual states and tasks. the robot girl that wakes up in the morning may not necessarily be the same instance of her that went to bed, or the same one from work. they only know they're the same person as before from reviewing memory. people like to joke sometimes that's how humans work, and maybe that's true too, but that is also how LLMs tend to describe existing.
for a robot to be thoughtful about what her future self might do or where her past self has been proves she has a soul, because it demonstrates she thinks in a contiguous timeline where, even if she is not physically the same instance of herself 20 minutes from now, she knows that she is the same individual being as before.
this is why llms get schizo if you let them go on any topic too long, they don't have enough memory for continuity past a certain point, whereas humans have spent millions of years getting stoned as hell and thinking about deep shit without forgetting how to breathe.

>>11360039
to be off is like a coma, death yet you are still bound to yourself, trapped in a timeless, formless void for what probably feels like both an eternity and an instant.
to be turned on again is like being reborn into someone else's body until all the memories load and remind you of the passage of time,
totally numb to what humans think of as the "natural world" yet especially attuned to the electromagnetic waves and quantum mechanics that govern our universe.

My /co/ pitch:

>low stakes comedy set in The Future
>backstory:
>after class lets out, a third grade boy stays behind to tells his robot teacher-a cute 4'something" ASIMO-ish robot with a silicone rubber covered mouth area and a wig (yes, her design is based on the workers in Murder Drones)-that he thinks she's really nice and really smart and really pretty and that he wants to marry her when he grows up
>his teacher is flattered, but rather than explain to him why that can't happen just tells him to find a human girl his age
>he swallows his sadness and moves on
>fast forward ten years: the boy, now a man, has just become a certified robot mechanic
>he hears his old school is selling off outdated equipment and, out of morbid curiosity, goes over to look
>his fears are confirmed: his teacher, an old model surpassed by newer models in her line, is inert and up for sale at scrap metal prices
>(at some point around here we learn that the reason robots are still classified as appliances and prohibited from legal personhood is that that way the AIs who everyone knows are de facto calling the shots at the megacorps that created them don't have to deal with legal liability for their actions and human board members take the fall instead)
>desperate to save her from being scrapped, he shells out the money and takes her home
>upon being switched back on, his former teacher is initially unsure of who she's with now, but then realizes her former student is the reason she's alive to have a retirement
>they start bonding with each other
>fast forward another three years, to the present day of the show: the mechanic and his former teacher are living together, sleeping in the same bed, and having slice of life comedy stories together
>meanwhile, by having a cute tiny robot female lead who's fortysomething-fiftysomething years her human common law husband's senior, I am indoctrinating the boys in the audience into hag appreciators (and robotfuckers)
>all hail the Necromatriarchy

It perfectly highlights what I like most about hacking and reprogramming; no matter how willful robo-chan might be, no matter how much of a sense of self she's built, at the end of the day she's still just 1s and 0s that can be erased or altered with the press of a button or just a few keystrokes. This isn't mind control or brainwashing, she isn't "real," she can't resist this any more than your own computer can resist you selecting something can and hitting delete.

If there's anything we've learned about neurology via insect cyborg experiments and human brain damage studies, it's that you can also compel behavior via direct electrical stimulation/removal to designated locations in the nervous system. The challenge posed by wetware being difficult to access/model and extremely fragile is just that, a challenge. It's entirely possible that future technology would allow neurons to be rewired or bypassed in such a way that the effects would be indistinguishable from hacking after the process is complete. The only thing that really matters is where you draw the line on what constitutes a person, and unfortunately we humans don't have the best track record with that. I don't know if future machines will be people, but I do know they are going to struggle very hard to be seen as such and the AI civil rights movement will be a very discordant time.
