picking up oddly balanced very heavy objects. It differs from something like a barbell that is perfectly balanced.

The biggest gains are neuromuscular adaptations that you likely barely even feel while doing it. A large portion of the gains are coming from transverse plane movement, which is heavily underutilized in lifting. We primarily lift in the saggital plane and very few people train the frontal plane, and then even fewer train transverse plane.

These are kinesiology concepts if you want to learn more about it.
Anonymous No.76573047 >>76573054
>>76573042
Good point. Most people never think past sagittal plane work, so anything forcing stability in the transverse plane feels foreign but builds control fast. Odd objects basically force the body to recruit stabilizers you don’t hit with barbells. That neuromuscular carryover shows up in real-world strength way more than a clean, balanced lift does.

the better real world translation would be daily life, like bending over and twisting and living a heavy object in your shed.

If you train primarily in the saggital plane, all saggital plane muscles in that movement are going to be able to lift that weight, but your transverse plane muscles that keep you from snapping your shit aren't, so when you successfully lift it up with your saggital plane muscles, you then have to utilize your transverse muscles for stability, but they aren't trained and your spine snaps in half.

Anonymous No.76573070
>>76573054
Precisely, that’s the disconnect between gym strength and functional resilience. Sagittal dominance creates prime mover strength, but without sufficient recruitment in the transverse plane you’re missing the stabilizing musculature that resists shear and torsional forces. Odd-object or rotational training essentially conditions those neuromuscular pathways so the spine and hips can handle asymmetrical loads without compensatory breakdown. That’s why it translates more directly to injury prevention in “real-world” movements than perfectly balanced barbell work.

That's cool and all but that still doesn't answer my question, what's the function for? What's it good for? Ok sure stability, cool, stability for what? Better sports performance? Immense majority of athletes get most of their development from skill training, lifting weights and plyometrics, is it good for carrying objects like your sofa or your fridge if you're moving? Those objects are heavy so strength training will still have a higher carry over than something for stability.
A movement like that might have some benefits im not saying it doesn't but what are those benefits? What's it gonna make your more stable for?

Muscle mass just does a lot for you.
Even if you like strength, bigger muscles give you more room to get stronger.
Bigger muscles help decrease general injuries.
You also just get to eat more since muscle mass requires more calories.
If you're keto/low-carb it's a cheat code because bigger muscles absorb more sugar for glycogen.
Helps mood and mentals.
Helps regulate hormones

Nta but everything. The point isn't to replace standard strength training, but to move the joint under reasonable load through make all kinds of various and potentially awkward positions, this should in theory make it healthier and more stable at all times. This is good for both gym lifting and everyday life where you usually do movements at weird angles that are unlike the gym variants. And in general you should become limber/stretchier(?) which just feels good.

Literally every movement you do irl is at a weird angle compared to a bench or a shoulder press. The point isn't to train *for* that one movement they do with the mace, but that said mace movement just trains the shoulder in a range of motion that prepares it quite well for other different positions, and there's different mace swings and shit to make sure you hit all the stabilizers and get good strength+mobility combo in the joint.

The same way swimming makes your shoulders feel good outside the pool and is used for both rehab and prehan even though you never actually do a swimming motion in other parts of life.

face it, these are only the daily movements of a farmer, and if you are a farmer, you develop the strength needed to do this shit by farming, not by swinging shit around your head like a retard. your 'functional strength' that you claim is so essential is pointless for 99% of the population, and the 1% that actually might need it still dont need to do your hyper niche exercises.

i dont even do strength training much, i mostly focus on calisthenics, but im not such a retard to go around spouting this nonsense that strength training is somehow less functional than the dumbass shit you waste your time doing. the real strain of manual labour is 99% just moving heavy shit from one place to another, and things like deadlifts, squats, and ohp are by far the most effective way to train for that.

Don't forget to strengthen your tendons. The bowling pins/kettlebells/strongman lifts are worth adding in for a small percent of your program even if you don't compete in anything that uses them. If you are trying to be really athletic or functional, the more proficient you are at a variety of movements the better. The idea that you can get really good at one lift and it will automatically make you really good at something else (the transfer effect) is kind of a meme. Crossfit, conjugate, gymnastics, good S&C programs all have the right idea.

There is no "rest of us". There's me, you, and other people, some of which will do pure strength training, and some of which will use maces and clubs, with varying degrees of overlap. You're free to join whichever camp you want, and to keep conflating me with the op lol.

But once again it's a similar principle to swimming (and in some wayvarious rotator cuff and similar exercises like face pulls, rear delt flies, shoulder dislocates etc). One swim pull is little.resistamce, yet doing it for a longer time is a good workout that can do wonders for shoulder health.

Also there's many different ways to do mace/club work; you can get ones that are very heavy and if you can learn to swing that stuff around you're def gonna be strong as fuck. Picrel., a "macebell"

They don't rely on momentum thoughbeit because you need to exert force to redirect the arc. Things want to move in a straight line and you need to exert centripetal acceleration to change the straight line to an arc. As for
>designed to injure
it distracts the joint similar to a dead hang and the reason many people (myself included) get into it is to rehab shoulder and elbow injuries from other weight training. We're terrestrial animals running on jury-rigged arboreal hardware and our shoulders don't handle compression very well

I understand you're being sarcastic but some people do that. They said, if someone absolutely held a gun to your head and said "pick one and only one implement for the rest of your life or I'll shoot you in the butt" it's probably a safer bet to pick an adjustable club over an adjustable kettle or dumbbell since you can do all the uniplanar (press, row, etc) and pitch/hinge (swipes and cleans) with a club, but it's more difficult to do the rotational movements with a kettle or dumbbell. You can - jeets call it a rumali curl (https://youtube.com/shorts/LAKvbR2KidA?feature=shared) - but it's easier to clip yourself with it.
Since no one is holding a gun to anyone's head, I prefer a multi modality approach

you get strong in a limit range of movements and not all of that strength necessarily carries over
For example, if you bench when do you ever actually do anything that even uses your chest as a primary mover, let alone completely isolates you in laying flat on the ground and push up against something trying to crush you. Posterior chain stuff like squats and deadlifts can transfer a lot more but even still, nothing you're picking up will be comparable to a barbell in terms of weight balance and grip.
This isn't to say that jeet clubs are actually any proof of strength (the trick is just using momentum and not hitting yourself so you barely train throwing strength at all) but regular compound exercises are rarely a good example of functional strength.
Contrarily, shit like farmer's walks/suitcase carries are great because its something that you will come across routinely in everyday life.

Yes when his goal is to look stronger and he isn’t. The force is from momentum of the clubs, not by him. I can “generate” more force by dropping my OHP from extension onto the ground but that’s a pretty shitty lift. People make fun of crossfit pull ups for a reason. Swinging your body, or in this case swinging clubs, might get the result but it’s not a show of strength and it limits muscle growth. You’re supposed to be pushing what your body can do, that’s how you get stronger.

I gave my dad some kettle bells for Christmas two years ago and apparently made him too strong. Real maces for hitting people to death with weigh like 4 lbs max and are usually lighter. Because swinging fast and without having to telegraph like a Dark Soul’s boss works better than trying to use sledgehammers as weapons.

Btw, if you don’t want to spend a ton of dough on maces or clubs, buy garage sale hammers. You should be able to get up to 20 lbs without having to buy specialized equipment. My lightest actual exercise mace is a 25 lb because my 5, 8, 12, 16, and 20 lbs “maces” are actually vintage sledgehammers.
