this is so tiresome man, I just accepted to take part in a 4 interview long one for a lowcode position (it is what it is)
do you guys aim for a specific number of interviews that you take part in the same time period?
I feel like accepting interviews from more than 4 companies at the same time makes it hard to prepare well for any of them
but then again, /utwg/ suggested to apply to way more positions than I used to (14 per year)

Crazy how much the process has changed. For me, my jobs after graduation were:
2000 - HR contacted me to set up an interview. Guess you could call it a phone screen but she didn't ask me any of the HR shit about "what animal are you". One casual phone interview with a PM and the head of SE. One on site interview with the CTO and COO. Job offer.
2003 - Contacted by a recruiter. One on site interview with HR. My work experience was unquestioned. Job offer.
2008 - One phone screen with the hiring manager, one on site with another SE. Job offer. During orientation, HR asked those stupid "what animal do you think you are?" questions but the job was already secured.
2016 - One interview with the hiring manager, one with the CTO. Remote job so nothing on site. This one is misleading since I knew the head of the department from a previous job and he was able to vouch for me.
2022 - Fired for refusing the jab. All interviews since then have been insane pipelines with only a ghost at the end. Age might also be a factor but of course no one is going to admit that.
Now I'm getting back some of the taxes I've paid over the past two decades by getting SNAP and Medicaid, so that's something. Guessing the only way forward now is independent development.

here, let me tell you the difference:
nepotism: when a RELATIVES OR CLOSE FRIENDS GIVE YOU A JOB.
networking: when friends or acquaintances HELP YOU GET A JOB, most likely because they know how good you are at the job.
if you don't see the HUGE FUCKING DIFFERENCE, you need to leave this board, because you are too retarded to even think about it.

googling for "job ad fraud" led me to this:
>Encountered a Fake Job Posting? Hereβs Where to Report It! If you come across misleading or fake job ads, take action and report them to help protect job seekers and ensure accountability. Hereβs where you can report:
>Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
>Submit a complaint about deceptive business practices: reportfraud.ftc[.]gov
>State Attorney Generalβs Office
>File a report with your stateβs Attorney General: www.naag[.]org/find-my-ag/
>Better Business Bureau (BBB)
>Report the company if itβs listed: www.bbb[.]org
>Job Board Platforms
>Flag fraudulent job ads directly on sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor. Most platforms have reporting tools.
>U.S. Department of Labor (DOL)
>Report broader labor violations: www.dol[.]gov
>Local Workforce Development Agencies
>Contact your nearest workforce center for assistance with employment scams.
>Reporting fake job postings helps protect others and keeps the job market fair for everyone.
maybe report them to the DOL, BBB and flag them on the platform they published the ad

IF YOU ARE A US CITIZEN I NEED YOU TO READ THIS
There exists certain jobs called PERM jobs, which is when rather than offering an H1B visa the job directly offers a green card which is permanent residence. These jobs are LITERALLY hidden from Americans by being placed in newspapers and obscure locations that Americans would not be able to find and apply, which makes the company able to hire the immigrant under the falsehood that they could not find an American to fill the job.
WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. The best option we have is to follow sites that manually parse through newspapers and upload the jobs onto a database that we can then apply to. Usually the PERM job is created for an existing employee but if US citizens apply to the PERM job they are required to consider all of them and put the PERM process on hold.
How we can fight back against this:
1) Go to jobs.now, and apply for any job that is event slightly relevant. Make sure to polish your resume for each job
2) Report every listing that you see to the USCIS through their online tip form

start reporting some and let me know how it goes.
at this point the fraud is so blatant that is obviously some sort of geopolitical strategy between the US and india. 40% of dev jobs are currently held by immigrants with the large majority of them being indian. if this were not a planned thing and the people in charge seriously let this many non citizens run infrastructure then we are fucked anyway. even ignoring how bad it fucks over the domestic labor pool it seems like a massive national security issue. not just from incompetence but rather how easy it would be for states to flip them.

Companies needed workers during and after the pandemic. There were needs for tech during lockdowns, and also lots of money after trump's cheques.
There is nothing but a need to fire those people now. They are just bloat.

Hope you got some screenshots or snapshots on Wayback so you can still show off what you made. That's how I handled it when dumb clients started fucking around with my perfectly good sites without a damn clue what they were doing.
I made a website for an important international client where the marketers promised a whole bunch of bullshit without consulting the sucker who'd actually make it (me) how much time it would take (a lot). Then suddenly the boss was breathing down my neck about the site and I needed to have a meeting with the marketers about why it was so taking so long. I took one look at what the document containing the specifics that the client agreed to. Now we normally built simple sites or used templates, but this site was using a complex design from the customer with lots of specific needs (it had to be done in WordPress with some shitty expensive theme with fancy animations, custom interactions, an easy way to edit multiple kinds of post types that had to work and of course all of this had to be responsive) and told them "if you had asked me if it were possible to make this site in 40 hours I would've told you no and that you should've either billed them for 70 or let me program it how I want it". God I fucking hate marketers.

Every job I apply for ends up being a rejection.
I've only had two interviews this year, one back in Feb and I have zero idea why they were interviewing me because it was well above my experience. I can only fathom that they had a company policy to interview x number of people.
One was last month but the company got bought and went into a hiring freeze. Reeeeee

What'd you guys recommend I do with this time to make me as employable as I can be and get my foot in the door? UK based so x2 difficulty. I know the basics (build projects, go over past modules) but some more specific advice would be great.
I've done some research and an IT assistant seems easiest to break into then move into security then up or something else from there. Any thoughts on if this complete BS? Or is there a better pathway out there?

Couple weeks of gaming, gym, sports, eating lunch/dinner together and then you hit them with "brooo where are you applying brooo"
Hit up your professors to see if they can refer you as well
>I've done some research and an IT assistant seems easiest to break into then move into security then up or something else from there.
Try it. But actually do it instead of just saying it here.
Dont forget to unwind each day after all that effort. Never Doom. Pray pray pray
If you have spare money, get Security+ certification. Or CEH. If you don't, ask your parents.

If you're comfortable splitting yourself into two, then apply to 10 swe jobs and 10 IT security jobs each week.
What matters most in the end is if you can pass those interviews at all
Mass applying means more chance to see what's the tests are like so you dont get anxious too much even if you fail on the first couple ones.
You can make a separate resume for swe jobs and security jobs, or you can just cram it into one. No more than 2 pages, though.
Anyway, i hope you take the time to strengthen your wrist, shoulders, and lower back at least 1 hour a day. The daily life of having a job can be very, very, very mentallly taxing and you might get chronic pain all of a sudden. Problem solving tasks is one thing, dealing with people is entirely different matter. Try not to give a shit too much. Unchecked stress --> awful coping method --> performance drop --> damaged self esteem --> physical pain.
Hug your mom and dad
What matters most is not getting the comfiest workplace or the highest salary, but having short commute and family who doesn't disrespect you.

Why are employees still not protected from dismissal due to AI replacement? This is happening everywhere, but the legislation remains unchanged. My friend from Germany says that one AI replaced hundreds of technical support staff in one company, and the funny thing is that this AI can only answer basic questions, but the owner doesn't care, he just wants to get rid of potential customers with complaints.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, I suspect AI is another dot com bubble. Investors and big companies are investing billions into tech that, to this day, still can barely count how many R's are in the word strawberry. It's not going to replace human workers any time soon. At best they'll insist you use AI to "speed up development" at big retarded companies because of sunken cost fallacy.
>My friend from Germany says that one AI replaced hundreds of technical support staff in one company, and the funny thing is that this AI can only answer basic questions, but the owner doesn't care, he just wants to get rid of potential customers with complaints
And then that dumb idiot will go bankrupt when he stops getting customers. The system works as intended.

I also don't think that AI will be able to completely replace workers, but it can make tasks 50%+ easier. Because of this, if companies previously needed 10 front-end developers, now they can perform the same number of tasks with 2-4 developers.

And me personally, I don't think AI is that impressive yet. I got it to do a slightly more complex search and replace with good results (cause the variables that needed replacing were all named in a different way), but fixing bugs or implementing new features... eh.

One of the few good things about California is them banning most non-compete employment contracts. LinkedIn posts that criticize Gen Z for their supposed incompetence or "annoying" behavior are often a form of demoralization. These posts, which claim that new employees are useless and should already be experts, are misleading.
The reality is that entry-level jobs, internships, and even junior roles are meant for learning. It's the responsibility of mentors and senior employees to teach and guide you. Influencers especially some recruiters and HR professionals who complain about Gen Z being lazy or unemployed are often doing more harm than good. They may simply be looking for reasons not to invest in training and fair compensation.
Don't be fooled into thinking you need to have numerous certifications, extensive experience, and mastery of multiple tools before you even land a job. This is often a tactic to lowball your salary.
This kind of disparity is clear when comparing job markets. In many developed countries, a decent salary might require proficiency in just a few key areas, while in developing countries, you might need to be skilled in twice as many things just for minimum wage. This leads to a situation where experienced professionals with advanced degrees and certifications are forced to compete with recent graduates for entry-level salaries.
If you have a strong skill set and expertise, seek out a workplace that will reward you fairly for your talents. Don't let yourself be convinced that you're "not good enough."
Your first job is important, but after a few years of experience, you'll be as capable as anyone else. Don't be afraid to ask for a higher salary in your next role.

I'm a 24 year old who is about to graduate with a zoology degree and I am realizing that I'm going to need a better degree if I want to do the things I want in life. I have the means to get another bachelors and I am considering going into CS to be a software engineer
I don't have any experience with coding aside from object based programming and data analysis in Python and JavaScript. Yet I feel that this field could potentially lead to me where I wanna be in life: a WFH job, living on the west coast, being able to travel every so often.
I'm just very hesitant to get a degree because all I'm hearing is how utterly fucked the job field is. Pajeet outsourcing is taking away jobs from Americans and the few remaining positions are being given to H1B visas. Thousands are laid off every few weeks and AI is on the verge of replacing all the beginner level jobs, making it even harder for people to get their foot in the field. All I hear about CS is doom and gloom
Is all of this true or does this just all apply to people who just aren't skilled or really pushing themselves to do their best?

Masters degree are 1.5-2x the amount of work per class.
Isn't masters only have like 3 classes per semester?
My compsci has like 6 subject but we actually have like 10 classes and it was hell.
If i wasn't dealing with so much drama at home i could've get 3.2 GPA

Just in general its much harder. But if you career swap with a masters degree into Tech or Engineering related fields then you need to pre study for it. Atleast it would save you 4 years of schooling to move to another career but its much much harder to complete a masters degree in general.

Certs are alot harder than actual college classes. Last thing a college wants is more competition in the field of credentials. Also failure rate is higher so kids are likely to drop out if they fail that cert test multiple times.

Colleges made sense before
You spend roughly 2000hrs for 4ish years so 10hrs a week to complete a bachelors. Roughly same amount of hours but 2 years for a masters degree and get within the ball park of competent for the job. Add in clubs and internships and you are mostly functional in the work place.
Certs cut most of the bullshit and you can spend at max 200-500hrs or less per cert if you read all of the material/supporting material related to it and get more relevant information in 2000hrs through certs than you ever would with a degree. The cert also acts as a better filter than degrees since most colleges are barely teaching you anything unless you take a masters degree in the same subject.

Would you entrust a retard who does powerpoints all day to re-configure an entire database? No? Well, then it really does matter what you know, doesn't it? This retarded ass mentality that prioritizes social formalities over competence is what creates competence crises. If it isn't going to be your dumbfuck team of ADHD diagnosed tiktok scrolling stack overflow junkies that gets the work done it'll be the kind of guy that you hate the most. You'll find yourself in a situation where you need to hire those oh-so-icky-incel nerds as contractors to build shit for you. This business model will end up costing you more money in the long run since you're footing the bill to both babysit retards and keep the lights on. By the time your shit breaks again (because your team doesn't know what they fuck they're doing when it's maintenance time), you'll get another contractor to help you fix it.
So the lesson here is to do certs instead of university/college, working your ass off of those? Can those be naturally gatekept due to difficulty or is there a possibility of it failing the same way uni/college did by lowering the bar just to get more money in?

Ever hear about the "cost effective" term being thrown around in engineering circles? That shit is pushed by sales teams looking to make numbers on paper look good.
They'll try anything to cut corners: using hotel key cards as measuring devices for part tolerances instead of using calipers, using dish soap as lubricant for mechanical devices, using frayed shitty chink wiring for power delivery, reusing damaged or defective parts in new production lines, using plastic for critical automotive parts like oil pans and radiator pipes, hiring H1B fags from bumfuck hyderabad at $3.50/hr to make bloated corpo jankware, you name it. to be fair, pretty much everything in "tech" (modern consoomer computing) is made by people, for people, using tools far removed from natural processes, designed along guidelines that don't have to care about core properties of the material world let alone anything actually intuitive. when it comes to using a computer, you can train birds to do it, let alone HR roasties and DEI hire jeets. companies just choose not to for cost reasons, and barely-competent would-be-hell-deskers refuse to for "gatekeeping".
>>106266188
>How the fuck did we get here?
i hate to sound like a boomer but i think it's a lack of passion. people just don't care. it used to be nobody cared as long as nobody died but even that is fading away. to quote a shitty youtuber, Boeing used to have the engineers participate in test flights. as in, they would have to sit in the cabin as the plane took off, circled about, and landed. That enforces "skin in the game" to make sure your designs work. these days, people work on things that they will never, ever use, so even if they do care on an ethical level they don't know what to care about because they don't use the product they create/support.
It's why I'm a big proponent of "total force" concepts and heavy cross-training. If I, the IT dustman, has to support something that is only used by naval engineers, I better know at least the surface level of the equipment the stuff I gotta support has to actually touch in real life. Likewise, when the naval engineers do their nonsense, I would hope that they have an appreciation of how many times they'll crash my servers and how many inches of water I can tolerate being in my space at a time.

Sure but engineering is not great either, bulding engineering nursing etc. Things are not going so well dispite the press in any sector in the US or China or Europe but especially tech. I do think the knwledge on how to chage a dressing for example is less trancisent than something like a programming language or proproitory system which tend to become obsolete every 5-10 years or so. Carpentry, pluming trades are betetr bets than infotech or fintech right now

befor epeople got into tech becaus ethey played with 8 and 16 bit computers as kids, learned to program as kids, found conecting copouters remotely magical and loved the subject just as a nerd hobby. I still do, I still write C and make stuff for my own purpses.
Then came a wave of people post 1999 that got a degree simply because they thought
computer job = money
Quite often they don't have the degree or even the knowledge but are just expert liars now, they don't like computing have never even built a PC or written something for fun and quite often they hate anyone who actually likes computers at all becaus ethey hate them. They do very bad work and are expert in office politics and passing the buck. Many are Indians.
They are all usless and complex systems are atrophying or simply being shut down under a tide of people who only touched computinng for moneny, Now there is not even money in it or even a job. There are fewer jobs, more graduates and more unemployed every year and it requires less and less skilled workforce due to the resurgence in centralised computing, software as a service and disposable end user devices. >Would you entrust a retard who does powerpoints all day to re-configure an entire database?
you are assuming that people are only competent or retarded. guess what: tons of people are competent yet still don't get jobs. it's called unemployment and it's part of capitalism: as long as there are unemployed people, capitalists can keep wages in control
also, you have to find ways to get a job and that's a skill on itself, especially in times like this where a lot of people are being fired. if you think you are special for being able to "re-configure an entire database", I've got bad news for you...

>as long as there are unemployed people, capitalists can keep wages in control
This would have a much better delivery if you talked about how competition is limited by lobbying for regulations, lawsuits and buyouts in select industries which gives way to this phenomenon. Also, high unemployment either means decreased capital which means less competition and/or less demand for goods. This isn't as deliberate as you'd think. Market dynamics can be tricky business

capitalists literally own the government. it doesn't matter if it's a "communist", liberal or conservative government.

Any body who wields any form of regulatory power is the government, jackass. It's not exclusively defined by "capitalists". These business elites are the ones who are leasing government power, They don't own the government, they're just one of many interest groups that do much of the same fucking thing.

IRL networking was the default boomer's way back in the day, though there was also plenty of nepotism. The networking bit moved to social media which tends to alienate and atomise people, so younger generations don't know how to do it.
