You will be replaced by ai because you learned how to code at school as a memorized skill, and not because you are intelligent enough to actually quickly pick skills, or as your passion.

That's quite low iq-minded and you don't pass the ai filter.

People good at tech usually have side skills like music, crafts, art. Kind of like good lawyers get linguistics degrees, but English majors aren't smart enough to pick law.

Dunno if they have quotas or some shit, but every day they act like there is a huge new error and dont even write repro steps so it looks our code is shit and barely works, and when you walk up to their desk to give you the repro it’s β€œi manually changed this file with a text editor” and β€œi entered devmode and changed a setting while copying a file”. Motherfuckers know that if they wrote a repro it would be a low prio ticket and not urgent
Like I got one today saying the program doesnt start after the new update, and the fucker manually deleted every file in the folder but the exe, but gave zero mention of that anywhere in the ticket - of course my boss then talks down to me for pushing broken releases

Anyone at work feeling more like a political piece? I feel like I'm constantly getting thrown shit at me and it doesn't really get redirected to the right people since they'll just assume I'll handle it or take charge of the operation. Like I feel like I'm constantly getting interrogated, audited or have to be insanely careful to what I say to external teams because they take what I say in whatever context they'd like. It's quite frustrating desu. I wish my users would work with me but it consistently feels like it's me vs them and I'm so tired of having to defend myself when they're just requesting or checking something. For example, one issue came to me and I'm like oh you should check in with X team. Then the requester was like "ok", then see writes to my boss with her boss cc'd going "I talked to anon and he said this should go to X but I really think you should be involved here." and I'm just like the fuck? This shit happens to me on a constant basis and I'm starting to really hate working with my users.

Yes, politicking is essential in the workplace. Communicating effectively is essential. You must stay wired with the hierarchy, stay in your lane and consult who needs to be consulted. Do not let random faggots who have zero authority or leverage twist your arm either. It’s a bit of an art tho because some people are obviously so essential and based that I will work with them a little outside the lines a bit but yeah. Idk your situation but clarification from your boss is always good because then you at least know. For me people will try to get away with shit or act uppity and you pretty much have to get the boss to ego check them.

If you are asking for direction at work and get nothing then you need to atleast give them expectations upfront. Such as it takes X amount of time to get X done. There expectations need to be that it takes you 2 days to get 1 days worth of work done so you can actually handle shit if it goes south and give yourself more time. Normally a regular company would have a 1+ mode of hiring due to natural attrition and hire a few extra to fit the seats/shifts but now they don't even do that due to the market shitting itself they barely even shift people over. Some of these positions you see are for internal hires so these managers are forced to play the dog and pony show through hiring applications then they default to the internal hire. He has to be a malding third worlder who cannot get admin rights for his work computer. Which would mean he is pissed about not watching porn/playing video games at work on his PC.

At the end of the day he is a brown stupid nigger. Aint no way would programmers have time to pickups IT work, do their job and deal with customers. Programming teams are tiny in comparison to the chronically short manned IT department. My companies IT/Programming to employee ratio is littearly 1/800 aint no way would cutting numbers from IT make this easier to manage. Installing shit like i just described for 120 users takes way longer than 2 hours since you are normally doing projects like that alone.

It would be absolutely retarded. AWS automatically does a buttload of shit necessary for enterprise-level SaaS. It would take you years of development to replicate AWS's security, redundancy, and availability by going with a cheaper option.

So you would either pay a team of developers hundreds of thousands annually to re-invent the wheel on cheaper infrastructure. OR, you don't replicate all of AWS's features and get caught with your pants down during a security incident or outage.

I learned this lesson the hard way. We went with cheap hosting and implemented security solutions on our own, only for the cheap host to go out of business, render all of our config work moot, and give us 60 days to migrate everything to another host.

For your company's case, this is probably a usage thing. Spinning up too many unneeded instances and services can get expensive real quick. Audit your usage and scale down to what is absolutely necessary.

The more I think about it, the ideal balance to strike is to max out on competence while also being unreliable. The unreliability gets you tasked less, but the competence also earns you some autonomy. Some people take classes to learn the material, others including me prefer self-study. There are textbooks, practice exams, and Youtube channels, etc. You schedule a test and pay the test fee. You then take a test in a proctored environment. That means you go somewhere and sit in a secured computer lab room. There will be security cameras and you won't be allowed to look at your phone. If you pass the test, you get the certification. Most certifications expire after a few years.

Certs are helpful for general knowledge and for getting interviews. They're less relevant for passing said interviews and doing your job well.

This is different in breadth and speed to anything prior in the tech workforce, it's not just a skill ceiling but rather hollowing out roles such that there's just one guy to take responsibility while AI is doing the repeatable work
AI is the tractor of white collar work, regular farm labourers don't have a higher skill ceiling they just become obsolete

I get it but that requires more knowledge to perform. What happens is that it diffuses these skill sets out. At this point anyone can start up a business making and selling furniture. Anyone can hire R&D to engineer solutions for market demands hell you can do it and sell some made for TV crap. The skill ceiling his higher since their is much more to learn just like farming but the control of the end production is laid in more so on the person rather than just the owner who can afford the equipment.

Long term solution would be, save up enough PTO so you can be like

Have them write it down. One it removes ambiguity and two it allows you to come back to your client or supervisor to show them what you're dealing with.

there were good collection already
1. Take as much sick leave as possible. If you work in one of those unlimited PTO companies time to stress test the policy
2. Spend all you available budget, learning courses, books, home equipment
3. Document EVERYTHING on your way out. In fact, this should be part of everyone's routine, you don't know when you need to put a bit more bite into your negotiations
4. Call out people on their bullshit in public, time for reverse humiliation
5. Start unionizing, organize a strike lmao
6. Start gossips, hide secret messages around the office
7. Be on top of your opsec, always have plausible deniability

Nobody is writing boilerplate. We have had frameworks to do this since forever. They're just moving the bar up on what they claim is boilerplate and it's going to blow up in their face.

Why do they even approach people like me with 5 years of experience and a masters degree? I don't really want to switch jobs. I already make 80k eur a year on 36 hrs at the government. In this country (Netherlands) earning 90k or even 110k wouldn't really make much of a difference. Going to 110k is like 15k extra a year, 1.2k net a month. Woohoo big deal. The millenials who bought their homes already get that from their 1.5% interest (at lower rates than current ponzi market / housing market).

I don't really have much motivation to do this work anymore. I really enjoy that I can just get away with working 4-6 hour days and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to working the full 8 as I did when I was more junior. Companies should just recruit juniors I don't know how senior level+ people can stay motivated to do this work. In Europe it definitely isn't the money or career ladder.

>Dijkstra: My point today is that, if we wish to count lines of code, we should not regard them as "lines produced" but as "lines spent": the current conventional wisdom is so foolish as to book that count on the wrong side of the ledger.

For the trivial case I might just agree, but ime anything slightly more complicated it breaks down quickly. IME for non trivial shit I spend more time prompting and doublechecking the output. Also, don't forget it is heavily subsidized atm. I have no problem spending my dayjob budget on AI scam, but I would never pay for it if it was coming out of my pocket.

> most hilarious way to quit

Probably no the most hilarious but I can recommend just doing as little as possible. Start coming in late and leaving early consistently. On WFH days only do mandatory meetings and then activate the jiggler. Just stress test how long it'll take for you to get away with doing the absolute bare minimum.
