What's a good option for low power/noise GPU in 2025? I have some salvage parts I want to put together but I still need a GPU for more video output, and some general HW acceleration, but not for graphically intense games or anything. I have an old 1070 laying around and performance wise that would probably be fine, but I want something a little more efficient, up to date, and preferably quiet.

buy used HGST ultrastar drives, ideally 10TB ones
get 4 (or 5 if you want 1 spare drive in case one breaks) of the same kind
use 4 drives in a raid5 array for redundancy and speed
if you want to, encrypt them with LUKS
now you have 30TB of storage, if a drive ever fails (unlikely but possible, theyre used drives after all) you won't lose any data as long as it's just 1 single drive and not 2 at once. replace the drive and rebuild your raid array, done.
HGST ultrastar drives are very fast, and used ones are CHEAP. 80-120$ for 10TB is pretty good, or at least that's what i paid for mine on ebay.
if you use windows you're probably out of luck, because raid on windows is a humiliation ritual.

oh and i forgot to mention, stay very far away from SMR (shingled magnetic recording) drives.
if you don't think that saving 5% of the price is worth it in return for having garbage unreliable shit performance drives that have to rewrite 4M just to change 1 byte, you want CMR (conventional magnetic recording) drives.
SMR drives have overlapping bits arranged like shingles to save space on the platter, you get higher data density and its cheaper to manufacture, but its less reliable, slower, and will give you garbage performance ESPECIALLY with raid arrays or encryption.

does anyone here have experience gaming on a mini pc? My old computer died on me and I don't want to spend a lot of money to buy a new one.
As long as I can run games in at least 720p, I don't care if I have to scale down the resolution. I don't even play very graphically intensive games usually. Mainly hearthstone, the bazaar, WoW, LoL, csgo, overwatch, etc.
I'm in the US, I guess i would want to spend less than 800 bucks, and my monitor is 1920x1080

You mean B850? You don't need to switch the motherboard if you're comfortable with using the CPU-less BIOS flash feature of the motherboard.
Both AMD & Intel DDR5 PC builders should be updating the BIOS to the latest stable version, there were some CPU microcode updates with memory compatibility improvements & safer voltage limits.

but since its limited to 'only' 800W, the amperage per pin would be 67% as high since there's now double the 12V lines as before which should mitigate a lot of the melting risk. the gpu should also have the per-pin current monitoring on the 12v-2x6 connector to let you know if anything is up

>I don't care about longevity as long as I can get through the gen as I upgrade every 2 years anyway
In that case, in at least the United States, the 5070ti is objectively the better card.
$50 more, equal in raster, slightly faster in light rt, significantly faster in heavy rt with a really good iq advantage coming not only from DLSS 4 but ray reconstruction.
FSR4 is compared to dlss 4 only because of the games that had official support early (think that list is still small), overall it's probably more of a dlss 3 competitor. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse. You will have to mod it in to most games, which will usually but not always work without issue.
DLSS 4 the list of games that support the app override is long, but even if you have to edit the whitelist or do it manually just regular dlss I've never seen any issue. Framegen override (to a game not on the whitelist) you can sometimes see issues upgrading the model, don't know why.
Framegen is a lot better on Nvidia, especially if you're starting from like 40-60ish fps. I've never seen fsr or lossless fg look good (comparatively) unless I'm starting from like 100+
I would also encourage you to stop upgrading every gen, thing aren't moving fast enough for the mid range to make that worth it.

I might have to get a 3rd party bracket or something

You're probably hitting performance limits before you're hitting vram limits on it, but if you want to wait then you should. I picked mine up because everything else was sold out and now I want 4k all the time so I've been thinking about grabbing one of these $2k asus tuf models popping up. Rumors are end of this year.
https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-geforce-rtx-50-super-rumored-to-appear-before-2026
Normally I'd say that's optimistic and a release around CES '26 is more realistic but vanilla cards are hitting MSRP or dropping below it in cases right now which probably wouldn't be happening if they were still going to be held back until next year..

https://videocardz.com/newz/msi-intros-mpg-271qr-qd-oled-x50-gaming-monitor-with-500hz-built-in-npu-and-full-displayport-2-1
>The main feature of the MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 is MSI’s OLED Care 3.0 system. Using an actual built-in NPU-based AI Care Sensor and an always-on CMOS sensor, the monitor checks for user presence every 0.2 seconds. If no user is detected, it can automatically power down or trigger panel protection measures, reducing energy use and extending panel lifespan. My Alienware QD-OLED monitor would definitely appreciate this feature, because Windows monitor sleep function often doesn’t work.

>For those who use their systems for more than 16 hours, MSI has also extended the Panel Protect interval from 16 hours to 24 hours. Importantly, all presence detection is processed locally on the monitor itself, with no data sent to the cloud, ensuring full user privacy.
Interesting tech that will compete with ASUS's OLED proximity sensor. I wonder if these sorts of panel protection features will become standard next-gen (seems like all the OEMs have a reason to standardize them to reduce warranty claims/maximize panel lifetime).

My advice is to watch for firesale deals from retailers during Black Friday if they are also anticipating SUPER cards to come into stock very soon and want to move inventory before then we'll see heavy discounts. Only the 5070 w/12GB of VRAM is really on the knife edge of being not worth it long-term @ 1440p, the vanilla 5070 Ti/5080 are well-equipped stock. If there's a really good sell (on those upper tier models especially) pulling the trigger early won't have you miss anything. If you're targeting something around $400-500 the 5070 Super will not only have more VRAM but extra CUDA cores for a performance boost there too.
