Microsoft Windows 11 24H2 update may cause SSD failures; DRAMless models are most vulnerable.
If you have a potentially vulnerable SSD, revert Windows update, disable automatic Windows update, & disable HMB.
https://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-latest-windows-11-24h2-update-breaks-ssdshdds-may-corrupt-your-data/

RTX 50 Super: might launch in Q4 '25, 24GB VRAM for 5070 Ti & 5080 Super, 18GB for 5070 Super.

>Omissions
RTX 5070: buy if it's reasonably priced & if you plan to work around potential VRAM bottlenecks.
RX 9070 non-XT: worth considering if it's significantly cheaper than the 9070 XT.

Intel 13 & 14th gen i7/9 -K CPUs: BIOS update required due to reliability issues. Recommended to set a CPU VR voltage limit (1.4 or 1.45V).

>Product Notice
Gigabyte RTX 50 & RX 9000 video cards: thermal gel has QC issues, Gigabyte claims only early production batches were affected.
https://www.igorslab.de/en/update-on-thermal-putty-on-gigabyte-graphics-cards-after-further-storage-oil-separation-to-an-alarming-extent-and-silence-as-a-strategy/

Avoid updating Gigabyte motherboard's RGB controller firmware, as it can disable board features such as Q-Flash Plus.

the only way linux could ever succeed as an alternative to windows on a large scale is if it gets to a point where it can do literally *everything* windows does out of the box completely flawlessly with zero fiddling/setup and users never have to see a command line interface in their entire lifetime of using it.

This will NEVER happen so stop bringing it up. Even the most user friendly linux distros need some amount of computer knowledge which is more than the minimum requirement for normies (zero). The moment they have even the slightest inconvenience they will immediately give up and go back to using windows (or, if they are homosexual; mac OS).

There will NEVER be a year of the linux desktop because only tech wierdos will even consider using it, because Linux developers only ever design with tech wierdos like themselves in mind. Windows and mac os are successful and dominate the market because they understand these facts. Linuxtards never ever will because they are too busy huffing their own farts all day long to notice that not everyone wants to sudo apt-get to download a fucking program.

Temporary Fixes
Effect
Disable HMB or fix it at 64 MB: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stornvme\ParametersHostMemoryBufferDisable=1 or HostMemoryBufferMax=40000
Multiple reports confirm BSOD and disk disappearance stopped on SN770/SN580.

WD improved with versions after October 2024, and Phison E12/E16 series reduced timeouts in May 2025 versions.

For now,
Phison E19/E21, SanDisk G2, SM2269XT, and other β€œcost-saving” controllers, along with older Phison E12/E16/E18 series (with DRAM),
are higher risk.

That’s the opinion that came up.

Ok whats the difference between doing

Another excellent point. Even the need to install linux is a massive barrier for normans, maybe even the main reason no one uses linux. I can picture the conversation:

>"What I have to install this thing? why? my computer already came with windows!"

This is the kind of person that walks into a retail store and buys a windows craptop. I know because I worked retail and a pc repair gig for a while and that was the average person I dealt with.
Anonymous No.106326300
I feel like the motherboard BIOS should warn you before it does RAM training because some settings that don't touch the ram but still does RAM training anyways just to be sure and with how long it is on AM5 some normies think they brick their machine.

The 4000 Super Series launched @ CES 2024 here's how things stood when the SUPERs launched then vs. November/Black Friday 2023 vanilla card prices that preceded it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdUUvaPfN8g&t=240s
You can see the vanilla cards cratered that November for BF and the Super Cards launched basically 50-60$ above them 1-2 months later (the vanilla cards never really lost anymore value beyond the price cut from that Black Friday adjustment even after the SUPERs launched). Note that in the past BF sales begin about 1-2 weeks before Black Friday itself with the really good sales actually becoming OoS by the time the day arrives so plan accordingly.

Can someone recommend me a LONG LASTING 4TB SSD brand?

I keep reading Samsung 870 EVOs had a LOT of failures, but despite that they seem to be my only option. (something about them being manufactured around 2021, I have no way to check before buying)
I need SATA, because I only got 2 m2 slots and one is occupied.
I need about 2x4TB for now, later upgrading to 3x4TB with 2 HDDs being my backup.
Might just get a 2.5 and an m2 for now.

Usecase is basically needing shit ton of storage, but can't run NAS wd reds because of noise.
Are WD blues better? I read they are leaving the SSD market.

I had a 870 EVO that failed, but all that went wrong was the fuse getting blown. Which has to be 99% planned obsolescence because none of my other hardware showed the least amount of problems, plus I use high tier corsair/seasonic power supplies.
Either way, I just desoldered the fuse and patched it with a small wire. It works now and it has been working fine ever since.

Since then I got a 980, two 990s (4tb) and a 8tb pm883, and none of them have shown any issues whatsoever. That last one has endurance in multiple petabytes.

I also have a smaller size 500gb samsung ssd I had for like idk almost a decade and it's at 95% health survived being in 2 laptops and 2 PCs.
I just really don't want to leave things to chance as there are many bad opinions on them.
Wish my GPU didn't cover the PCIE port.
I really wasn't ready for this level of storage expansion when I built this PC 2 years ago. I just need storage to hoard media from the web before it gets inaccessible.

How many 870EVOs have you had and at what capacity since then? I'm not worried about write capacity because it will be used as a write once and leave there forever only to be read every now and then.

Test 1: Restart the PC after each step to ensure the drive cache is cleared before proceeding. Copy the entire "CyberPunk2077" data folder (92.16GB) from your Steam library

Test 2: Prepare a 62.42GB file (62.42GB) containing 150 video files, each approximately 250MB, compressed into a 7z archive. Write this to the storage device to be verified.

Test 3: Decompress the 7z archive written in Test 2 within the storage device and write it to the storage device.

Drives were scored by:

Furthermore, that guy who responded to (Me) is wrong, as proven by MSI still trying to cope with "Improving" their refresh crap ( >>106325748
) because not only is these features deal breaking, anti consumer and game tournament winning destroying, there is simply no defense for it, no other oled device operates with forced refreshes, as I explained time and time again the problem but they don't seem to get it, every single manufacturer has their style of implementing it and it even differs between models in the same company too how it kind of behaves
if companies fixed their shit we would all get cheaper oleds but now you are like forced to pay the Asus tax or some shit
I am not even seeking perfection, way more shit is broken and retarded but this is just the basic shit I don't even care
but all in all this simply demonstrates the only truth in reality and life is that the more you pay, the more problems you remove and there is no getting around it, money is the only solution to fixing this problem currently, or taking the tv pill I guess to some extent
and nobody cares, well they do, msi has most complaints all over the leddit about this, but it's the same on other brands but nobody complains about them as much

>Again you can see the vanilla cards still held their value at retail for reason I really don't know why.
Retailers don't have a lot of margin to play with these cards; they need rebates from AIBs or the chip manufacturer to sustainably lower prices.
AMD had to delay the 9070/XT launch partly because they couldn't get the retailers to support the lower price pts until the retailers were compensated for their help in selling RX 7000 cards at a discount.

>Retailers order video cards expecting to sell them for $700 each
>Cards don't sell for whatever reason, GPU manufacturer still wants retailers to order next-generation video cards
>Retailers ask the GPU manufacturer to help them sell existing stock at a discount to clear inventory
>If GPU manufacturer is NVIDIA, they tell retailers to go pound sand, and threaten that their competing retailers will buy up the newer cards
>If GPU manufacturer is AMD, they agree to help with existing video card discounts, but they delay cash rebate payments

Is that 2 Molex fans connected with an adapter. The adapter has a 3pin fan header? IThe motherboard should have some manual fan speed tuning if you use the 3pin. The voltage will be the same but bigger fans spin a little slower at the same voltage. The max voltage and min voltages are gonna be about the same so as long as you don't turn the speed too low it should be fine.
>are there any other issues with this?
no, as long as you dont drop it too low.

No the fans have both a 3pin and a molex connector. You can plug in a 3pin into the motherboard and share the power via molex.
Disconnected the small one and im only using the big one because the airflow is better this way and because i dunno how much my shit mainboard can handle before dying.

Yeah its also what i read but again this is a really shitty mainboard that also overheats if you dare try use sata so im careful despite the small one pulling almost no power at all.
And just from the airflow it doesn't make much sense to have these two the way they are. Its a server in a closet so it vents hot air out the front with the big fan. Its set to a minimum of 600 rpm.

buy a $70 h610 mobo from aliexpress and buy a 12400f for $100 (you could get a 13th or 14th gen, but it needs a bios upgrade which probably requires a CPU).
should be a decent 1.5x perf boost for CPU stuff. 1080 TI is still fine. if your ram is 2133hz, consider buying 3600hz (but note that your ram, cpu or mobo could prevent you from reaching 3600hz, and the chinese bios is going to look really old school).
OR if you live near a microcenter, you could buy one of the intel/amd bundles if you want something overkill for your 1080 TI (I personally think the 12400f could handle more than a 1080 TI, but if you get a 5070 TI, you might be looking at getting a 7800x3d / 9800x3d, because the 2 or 3 games that needs 16gb also typically needs x3d for a ~30% extra fps / 1% lows, such as mohun wilds, but mohun wilds said they are going to optimize so who knows).
So check if the game you can't play is CPU or GPU limited.
You could use task manager, maybe WIN+G or steam overlay, but if you want something more technical there is msi afterburner (you need to manually enable the overlay, kind of technical) which I mainly use for the rtss framelimiter.

There's ResizableBAR for GeForce cards, but they're not as reliant on that feature because the GPUs have a larger L1 & L2 cache (resulting in more cache hits & less need to retrieve data from the VRAM or storage).
This also partly explains why Radeon GPUs tend to draw a bit more power.

The 5070 Ti has 4x & 6x more L1 & L2 cache compared to the 9070 XT's L0 & L2 cache (128KB per SM & 48 MB L2 vs 32KB per WGP & 8MB L2.

The 5090 is a terrible card, the entire 5000 series is terrible actually. The 5090 has basically improved nothing over the 4090, they just made an even fatter card and dumped more power into it. I am not sure how well it will actually hold up over several years because I expect the 6090 to utterly shred its asshole apart because it will come with a real node shrink, which means real perf/W and raw perf improvements. The 4090 was an amazing leap for its time (also had a real node shrink) but the 5090 is just a dogshit stopgap product with hardly any improvement, just something to fill the market with until they make a real upgrade.

Buying one of the most expensive card in one of the worst generations NVIDIA made in terms of perf improvement probably won't age well. Buy a 50-series card if you must, because you have no other options, but this is not the generation to "invest" in since it's one of the very bad ones.

Hello guys. I rarely post here.
I want to buy an OLED 4k monitor.
My budget is 1k usd at best.

I have some questions:
1. How bad/noticeable is DSC? Is it even worth to reduce frequency from 240 to 120 Hz to get rid of it?
For 4k@240hz which one is better DP1.4 or HDMI 2.1?
I see mixed answers online. Some people say that both can do it but only with DSC.
But HDMI 2.1 has more bandwith and I've heard that DSC is dynamic and has multiple levels of compression so if there is no room left it will use heavier compression.
Is this true? If yes then should I use HDMI 2.1 in this case?
Is it even worth it buying oled with very high refresh rate if my card does not supports DP 2.1?

2. What are good models? I was looking into these 3
GigaByte MO32U
AOC AGON PRO AG326UD
GIGABYTE AORUS FO32U2 (non-p version)
MSI MAG 321UP
Which one is better?

3. How noticeable is VRR flicker? I've read A LOT of complaining about this on leddit. Is it really THAT bad? Do I understand correctly that VRR flicker appears when your framerate is inconsistent? So to counter it I need either to disable GSYNC or buy 5090 to have max framerate?

4. If I can't afford 5090 and DSC and VRR flicker are bad then should I just buy decent IPS? I was thinking to get LG UltraGear 32GR93U-B instead

1080p is HD, you've been HD gaming.
MSI G272QPF E2 is an alternative, but it will probably be similar in terms of image quality.
Don't use HDR mode for these IPS monitors btw, they don't have a good implementation.

the only monitor that proves you are not poor is OLED and ultrawide will cause burn in within a year if you watch enough content in fullscreen 16:9 (youtube).
I swear I saw a rtings video talking about IPS degradation saying that IPS also gets bad burn with ultrawide, but I might be going schizo.
>>106330512
for $400 you can get AOC Q27G3XMN miniled on canada computers.
But note VRR flicker (caused a game stuttering, wont happen while watching movies / smooth fps / disable VRR), Mini LED artifacts (the zones are noticeable in the dark / high contrast), and the fact the US has a $350 USD version that better in every way (Q27G40XMN, 1150 zones instead of 350 zones, and I think it does not have VRR flickering, BUT the new version has a shit stand, but a better vesa stand costs $40).
It's a good VA monitor, but IPS would have better motion clarity, but the VA should do a lot better than IPS in a dark room & HDR (VA should look more punchier in the dark, and mini-led zones helping with dark content like horror and sci-fi and etc).
The problem with any other IPS display is that unless you currently own a 60hz office monitor (like $70 & 4:3 aspect), a new IPS display might not be "better", & if you are 60hz, you should be worried about your PC specs, maybe a 24 inch 180hz 1080p IPS display for $200~ CAD is a better pick (good for a 5060, but not 5070 TI).

>>106330549
I would say $600 in canadian is stupid, but I forgot that $350 US converts to $500, so you are just paying a $100 tip.
But you can get a OLED for $800 CAD (ASUS ROG Swift 34" OLED 240 Hz at Canada Computers, but it's ultrawide... so instant burn in for any 16:9 content, and curved... decent price however, but not shippable), which destroys a mini-led in everything except burn in (I think careful use can stretch a oled's life to 10 years, like lowering the brightness and not using it more than 4 hours at a time and keeping it cool / low humidity).

DSC is fine, not worth schizoing over.
But you can't use it if you want to use features like DLDSR, I don't think this is an issue for 4K gaming.

>What are good models?
MO32U and AG326UD doesn't appear to provide firmware updates. MSI 321UP does.
I would decide betweent he 321UP or FO32U2.

>So to counter it I need either to disable GSYNC or buy 5090 to have max framerate?
A more realistic option is to set a lower maximum FPS limit so your system can consistently hit that number @ 4K resolution, most newer games have their own internal max FPS limit options.

Fairly sure 265KF is overall more powerful, but it's not a big difference and 9700X has like half the total power draw and it's socket means you'll actually be able to upgrade it, whereas upgrading the 265KF will require you getting a whole new mobo

If you really want Intel I suggest waiting until the next year.
Anonymous No.106331750 >>106331761

The 265KF is gonna be an appreciable jump in application performance over the 9700X, but the Z890 is a dead socket that will be replaced by Nova Lake on LGA1954 next year that will actually have future release compatibility.

Meanwhile AM5 will have an upgrade path to Zen 6 next year and Zen 7 as well later. Plus it's cheaper. I'd go with the 9700X bundle.

GPU recommendation is whatever depending on your budget but RTX 5000 Super cards are due out in months possibly before the end of the year.
