Greetings everyone, I would like to say that I am completely open to critique if anyone wants to help me ascend the tier lists.

You're not really feeling the 3d form, most of your sketches and the way you construct the human body is really flat with cross counters that flatten the form, i've recommended dynamic sketching with peter han to you before, he has those organic shapes which is a good exercise for what you are struggling with in his first or second week i think. After that I'd suggest just drawing other stuff in general that isn't the human form which is also covered in dynamic sketching. As for human bodies draw with reference, don't try to do it from imagination at your level and keep it away from anime/stylization for a while, that comes later.

it's all form bro, shapes and all that. Rather than spending an hour trudging through trying to get a bad sketch to look good, take a step back to observe and think. Try to get things down with as few of lines as possible.
If you notice something small missing go ahead fix them, but if the drawing feels too wrong and you don't know where to begin on fixing it, just go ahead and start a new sketch and keep the old one somewhere.

You can play with shading all you want, but don't do it out of obligation. The only thing you should ever do out of obligation is sit down and draw. When you study shading simple things with clear planes, they don't look too bad. Though I really wouldn't worry about shading the girls you don't understand the form of just yet. I am truly trying to help you. If I ask for advice, and I am told by many people that I need to improve in an area that I don't think i'm lacking in, my conclusion has to start from "Why is that?".

More often than not, what I understand that area to be does not align conceptually. Either because I've misunderstood, or I've tricked myself into competency.
But this is good! It's good to relearn these fundamentals and get set on the right course. It's progress, not regression for me at least.

On rare occasion, I am indeed be correct. But only in areas where I'm already knowingly far and above an expert on the subject.
If I can’t say with confidence and consensus from others that I'm an expert, it's probably not the case.

So now I turn the question to you: What is form? And what does good form look like?
What does someone who is learning form, do to recognize how good their form is? How do you practice form, and track that practice?

If I can’t identify whether or not my practice is working, I also can’t figure out how to practice more effectively.

I'm none of these anons but you should think about dividing figures into basic forms and shading them from there- think the cylinder, sphere, and cube from your still lifes. Take your unnamed girl sub, the legs should be a cylinder and wouldn't have a shadow across them if the light is from the front/above. Breasts are more spheres and I think it's passable on her right, but her left makes no sense.

For studies, you need to consider what you're doing, not just mindlessly copying. I would focus most on longer studies like your tryhard figure as gestures won't help with your anatomy/form knowledge. You can try and apply your study by drawing the pose at a different angle. You can still do imaginative work alongside studies, I don't think you need to wait to try. But I also think you should aim for at least 50% studies, if not more.

This video might help, I think it has a good method for improving. He has this other video too about how to learn by doing copies, and he puts a lot of emphasis on drawing things accurately. Especially when you have a reference right there to compare your drawing to, you should aim to make your study as accurate as possible. He says something in the video like, if you're doing a copy and you draw it wrong, you're just learning how to draw things incorrectly.

But this is okay, critiques are conversations, I started things of vague, so it's natural for there to be a back and forth. I'm trying to solve that "Why is that?" by picking your brains a bit. This IS me showing some trust, I'm confused, but I assume there's a legitimate reason for what I'm being told, so I inquire. I wouldn't engage at all if that weren't the case.

As far as your thought exercise goes; Form is the fundamental of art that deals in creating the illusion of 3d spaces and objects on a 2d plane. Good form means the illusion is working and your eye is seeing a believable object existing in space. I see the skill curve of form to be like the evolution of 3d graphics in video games. You start with objects that don't make sense in space which breaks the illusion, then you have shapes that do look 3d but are simple like a ps1 or n64 game. As you improve the fidelity of the objects you draw become more complex like game models getting more and more polygons over the years. You practice form by creating forms, and you track progress by tracking the fidelity of the forms you create. People who are good at form are able to build complex objects with secondary and tertiary forms

Getting better is a simple process. Do this and you'll speed run to int level.

1.Consider which artists you want to copy. Just do it. It's how it's done in every field.
2. Observe every detail you like and replicate it.
3. Build your library of knowledge from these studies as you copy more and more artists. MJ learned to dance this way.
4. Bring all this knowledge into your own work and be amazed at how much better it's gotten.
5. Educate other people on how to draw given what you know now. I can't stress enough how important this step is in vindicating your growth.
6. Leap into subject matters that are beyond your personality and comfort zone. This boosts your creativity and skill level immensely.
7. Innovate given the skills and newfound creativity you've gained.

nta but it really does look that way. maybe less so laziness and more of a problem with drawing without intent. in all your practices, your lines are wobbly and meandering, tapering way past the connection points and in the case of your figures/gestures very chicken scratch-y. that rectangular prism looks bad, but would look way better with straighter, cleaner lines even with the perspective issues. I'd suggest drawing slowly and purposefully. make each line COUNT. do this with all your practices and even your sketches if you can, not just final linearts. this is a skill you learn in conjunction with everything else (especially all the other stuff that's been recommended already).

the best example is here >>7681401. look at how many lines you use for just thigh! then look at how the redline does it in a few smooth curves. try redrawing on your own, focusing less on little details like the face and more on depicting the big lines of the body. it should be what you learn with gestures using just C, S and I curves, so you should go back and look at that as well if you're having trouble.

Piggybacking off of Kings post here >>7680865, I'd also like to say I'm always open to critiques. I think I've come a long way since I started drawing daily in December, but I feel like I've basically stagnated for the past 3 months or so so that's my motivation to ask.

Doesn't matter to me what kind, though pointing our specific things and maybe even how I could improve on them effectively would obviously be more helpful.

I know a large part of what I need to do to get better is just draw more and that progress slows down over time, and I do notice I struggle a bit with just applying everything I know all the time, because I just...forget to, but I bet there's also a lot of stuff I just don't see/know that someone else could quickly point out.

I have a similar problem applying all the things I learn in recent studies which can feel frustrating. Yeah, overall I think this is probably the most important piece. I do need to get back into the swing of things a bit more to not just do the bare minimum every two days, but I'm definitely gonna continue no matter what.

This has been the most consistent feedback I have gotten every time I ask for critique. I do feel I try to push them more every time, but maybe I'm not going hard enough yet, or I'm falling back into rigidity. I'll try to go push them even more

I think those are very good assessments of the way I'm sketching. I do rush, and am very messy with my lines, partially because of the rushing, partially because I still lack the confidence in the forms I draw and can't always draw the line I want, but don't want to constantly undo every stroke. I'll probably get better by just getting better at forms and just overall mileage, but I'll also try to be more mindful not to rush too much.

Yeah, that's what i thought it meant. Good to see it drawn out though.
I think it doesn't work too well at all angles, cause perspective would shift the angle too much. In that one for example I think the angle you drew is more like 100° than 90°. It's still better in this case though, cause drawing 90° from between the eyebrows would be more off I think.
In general, for close to eyeline views of the head it probably works a bit better than just trying to align it with the brows, but for everything more extreme either method is probably too much guesswork to be perfect. Unless you're super cracked at visualizing 2d projections of angles in 3d space, which I'm not.

You may want to challenge yourself to doing smaller pieces in the same amount of time. How far can you refine just a bust in 90 minutes? I find that if I try to push more detail, or more perfectly construct edges, form, or shading, it reveals what I'm lacking in general.

for digital painting in particular, I've found doing the same reference study a few times and sticking to a single size brush for each also teaches me a lot. sometimes when i draw the same forms with a different brush size i realize how bad i am at particular curves or lines at certain scales that i need to practice.

also when i stopped relying as much on liquify while practicing that helped a lot to.

I guess that's pretty close to the timed gesture/figure ateliers on the discord (though a much shorter timeframe), and those definitely helped me both get better at figures in general and showed me which parts I struggled with the most.

I believe it. This would probably help me be more confident in doing simpler shapes as well, especially with larger brushes, cause I couldn't do as much detail.

I don't think I've used liquify in at least the last 4 months, maybe more. I don't like how it ends up looking so I only tried it a handful of times. I usually do lassotool and then move, or a straight up paintover. I guess the lasso tool is also a crutch though

Piggybacking off this the best way is to make three boxes or some sort of plane identifying shape. for the head, rib cage and pelvis, it will help with drawing landmarks and making sure angles line up better.

really nicely execute study. If I had to offer some constructive critique I'd say you could strengthen the C curve that makes up the gestural line in the figure. The figure in your ref has a bit of a stronger arc. You can see in the way the back of the heel and back of the head are on the same vertical parallel. Likeness is very well capture tho, keep it up.

Some DADs are just very strangleable. However his homage to Saint Aura in her final dark days is not something I'll forget again any time soon. This image got no comments, but I noticed it, and I nodded in approval in silence.

The rest I just like, but the witch looks very aesthetic so an easy S tier.

There is a difference in how you portray your opinions to others. The things i wrote about my sister as an example are all points i have talked about with my mother. I told her to cut down on the sweets, to make her exercise, and to be more strict with media and what she teaches her. My point is your value distillation is inconsistent but don't worry it just comes with more practice. If you're following the video's 2-value study then if you show the shadow of the midsection you should also show the values of the frills, shadow under arm, eyes, etc. because they're all equal or darker than it. Show and imply form with value and negative shapes. If the drawing is bad then fix it, it's 2 values, simple to adjust. Blot out large sections and redo if you have to.
