Wanted to share something, can't easily "see" things clearly on the ref to work easily but it's been fun to draw a face and have it make sense as a beginner, maybe it's an effect related to how we recognize faces? They didn't look quite as good I'd say, but it wasn't like I was completely new to drawing. Here's some of the stuff I think was the best I did back then. Top left was inspired by an image I like but without reference, top right was using a few references for Elegg, bottom left was a 1hr figure drawing and bottom right was an 8 hour drawing that was like 90% copied from a model I posed.

I jumped around a lot.
Pretty much immediately started with just grinding out semi finished Illustrations. Did like 40 in 50 days by doing one League champion at a time, doing some quick constructive copies of their official art to get a feel for them.
Then I spent like 1 month going through the Weichun book, then I grinded gestures for another month or 2, occasionally doing master studies of kan liu and other stuff.
Then I burnt out prepping for Artfight, did a few illustrations for that and took until now to recover.
I basically just looked at what I thought I was weak at, looked for resources for that and just grinded for a while, rinse and repeat.

By constructive copies I mean like making a basic mannequin for the pose and then drawing over that. I think blindly copying line by line doesn't really work, you need a goal. Basically studies really.
In the beginning my goal was just learning how to construct the pose and maybe learn a bit of how stuff got stylized, later it was way more on specific techniques for coloring and stuff.

Teacher back in school made us do the igor stravinsky upside down drawing. fast forward 10 years of occasional art phases that never lasted more than a month or two. Remembered that I'm not fucking poor anymore like back when I was a kid and bought myself a screen tablet mid-early 2024. Started participating in the thread challenges and took a more reference type approach with the goal to make what I draw look good instead of going full training wheels off. Been at it for almost a year without any significant break.

I feel like the thread challenges leaped me forward because I was able to compare myself to other anons on what I did vs what they drew and how to simplify and abstract a real person into lines instead of just copying a pre simplified drawing. also used that as a base for favourite animu girls

Try to focus more on what you actually see instead of what you actually know about the reference. Your brain wants to trick you into drawing by your knowledge. For example you know that arms and legs are long body parts and therefore you draw them long on your canvas, despite them being foreshortened on the reference. Keep in mind that even objects that are hundreds of kilometers long can be foreshortened to a small area on your image. In the end you are just drawing lines of specific lengths and angles on paper. I recommend that you try to eyeball the angles and line lengths and not think about the thing you are drawing at all. Keep your eyes as much on the reference as possible. "Keys to drawing" is a very good book that helps you drawing from life more accurately.

HELP I'M LOSING MY FUCKING MIND!! I've been using the classic measuring technique of holding my fucking pencil in front of me and measuring the distance between the thumb and the tip of the pencil, and I just realised that it DOESN'T FUCKING WORK! My measurements are CONSINSTENTLY distorted! WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ,ON WHY DOES NO ONE MENTION THIS, ARE MY EYES FUCKED? Are you not supposed to use this on things that are close to you? What is happening? I measure a certain relation between the width and the height of the object, but then it turns out that the object is way too wide. this happens every single time. I tried repeating the measurement 100 times and it's always wrong in the same way. This happens on every subject.

It's a meme image but the first part is true. You can use a grid to measure the proportions and then try drawing the same image without the grid.

This ref is a great example with the green chair. like if you can copy the two visible shapes of the green chair you already have a part of the woman you want to draw. with a bit of creativity you can make out a bunch of shapes that fill out the whole space surrounding her. I'm aware the red lines are technically just lines, pretend they are connected with an invisible line turning them into a shape.

Pencil-4 Soft from Krita standard brushes (different pressure strengths on the left), but I use it to blob in the shapes and as a texture brush, then I start cutting out the rest with a small rectangle eraser (size pressure sensitive). thanks, Its nice to work with, dries fast and you can just put another layer on if you make a mistake. I do work pretty mixed with Airbrush, pens and regular brush work. Its also very nice that it mixes with water so its easy to clean brushes and yourself. Some downside is that it changes in value after it dries, but you get used to it.

The most popular one is heads as a measurement unit, but iirc some "checkpoints" are unreliable because they fall in soft parts of the body. Vilppu uses the length from the base of the nose to the top of the head, which is more reliable than the former as it falls only in bone landmarks. You'll have to consult the specifics with the authors themselves though (Loomis uses heads btw)

So my main struggle right now is with the Torso/Leg proportion ratios. I know her legs don't look long/large enough, but my brain is unable to fully grasp how to fix it. It's very hard to figure out what the issue is...

Also, for that someone whose gonna say "You should have finished it". I did not have enough time to "finish" this study because I had to work on another picture after. However, I do want to finish an anatomy study at some point when I don't feel obligated to do another picture.

Also, any ideas on how I can draw better asses? I legit have very little experience with them, infact that's why I chose to draw this particular image.

ye i usually don't follow refs closely though, esp faces are usually changed entirely. completely lost the plot on these anyway

tried doing another rough draft of the commander character
he still looks too short, I need to lengthen his legs maybe. and have proportionally smaller feet idk
I think his new hair and facial hair works for a rogueish commander, and the crossed arms pose looks better than hands at his side or cocking a handgun
I think this may be closer to his final form though, which is promising. Aside from a ballroom outfit, I think he's pretty much set aside from a bit of detailing
