Anonymous Norway No.214357238 >>214368234

>What do I actually need for N3?
There's various lists of grammar and vocabulary out there for all the different N levels (don't forget you'll need to learn all the N4 and N5 stuff as well as the N3 stuff), once you've covered those you mainly need to mass consume reading and listening so you aren't too slow to keep up with the test or fail listening comprehension.
>and I'm level 10 in wanikani
This doesn't mean much if anything. Level 10 covers around 50% cumulative kanji of N5-N3, and 25% of N3 kanji only (https://www.wkstats.com/charts/jlpt <- this is only kanji not vocabulary).
Then again, that's literally only some theoretical kanji, you need to learn a lot more words than what Wanikani teaches you. Then there's reading speed, grammatical understanding, and listening comprehension. Take it from someone who finished WK, I am not even sure if I'd pass N2 due to lack of vocab.
>Got a test booked in December, am I gonna make it bros?
Depends how much of a ้ ‘ๅผตใ‚Šๅฑ‹ you are from today on, but passing chances sound a bit ๅพฎๅฆ™ from what little information you gave (hold a conversation about nothing techincal? Level 10?). Maybe the JLPT tango decks and DoJG grammar deck would help you with some structure if you don't know what you know and don't know.

Speaking as a native Japanese speaker, I didn't know this word, so I had to look it up on the Internet for its reading and meaning.
As far as I can tell from google, the kanji "้Ÿœ" is apparently categorized into ๆ—ฅๆœฌๆผขๅญ—่ƒฝๅŠ›ๆคœๅฎšไธ€็ดš (Level 1 of the Japan Kanji Aptitude Test).

ไธ€็ดš (Level 1) is the hardest test and its pass rate is anywhere from 5 to 15 percent.

Don't use wanikani, just use the anki RTK pack and write the kanji down during your reps (at least once, this is very important for memorization). Doing kanji through either method won't guarantee anything though since it's quite hard to infer the meaning of some words if you see them the first time, even with context in some cases (just won't click etc.). This especially under time limit constraints during an exam. So you need to add proper vocabulary reps relevant to the kanji that you know/are currently studying in order to really make a meaningful connection.

You should also look into some mock exams/past questions or books that give you mock questions like So Matome since you can find problematic areas with those. You don't need to do everything, just skim through the questions until you find something that you're not immediately confident on. This will cover a lot of your weaker areas.

What's so wrong about using Wanikani?
I feel like I've effectively learned many kanji and vocab that I didn't know before. When I see them in the wild I can immediately read the meaning and even the spelling. There's also quite a lot of vocab as well. I like it because of its ease of use, I can spend my efforts on something else.

Yes I'll look into earlier exams thanks.

My issue with wanikani is that it's essentially just a badly copied RTK homework with some extra functionality that you can get through anki anyways via a bit of editing and/or an addon (really just being able to use regex expressions in the search bar).
I teach online and I have two students studying for N4 and they make mistakes very often because of weird WK keywords they learned or because they try to construct word meanings using the WK keywords alone.
For what it's worth, RTK has equally dumb keywords for some things that just make things more confusing down the line, but the advantage with anki is that you can solve those problems with a "replace all" operation.
Anyways I'm pretty biased with WK because of those experiences and have seen people trip up due to stuff they learned from it. I generally can't recommend it because it will always nicer to have poweruser access to shit when you need it, which WK doesn't offer. I understand that people don't have all the time in the world to figure out how shit works on anki though and just want an out of the box solution. That's fine as long as it works for you and you're satisfied with the results.

Anonymous Japan No.214374207 >>214376482

I assume you're talking about WK users? They would stumble upon a word they hadn't seen before, and try to construct the meaning using keywords they had learned from WK.
This is probably not a good example, but let's assume you have never seen the word ๅญฆ็”Ÿ before. Trying to figure out what the word means using WK keywords alone would give you "study, life". And then it's easy to make the connection to student if it is told to you. "Ah, a student's entire life is study", you'd think, and then you'd never forget it because it's one of the easier words out there.
But if you're not sure and all you have is the keywords, then you may end up translating it as "curriculum" or "school life" in the moment, and then the meaning of the text you're reading would change drastically and you'd end up spending a lot of time trying to debug the part that went wrong in your reasoning when stuff eventually doesn't add up.

Then there's stuff with weird keywording.
I just looked through the wanikani anki deck posted here:
>>214372264
And there's stuff like the picture I posted, where ๅฐ's keyword (or meaning, as written here) is "machine", and that's supposed to help you remember the mnemonic and other subsequent ones based on their system. The problem is that ๅฐ in actual use has more to do with platforms (more generically, flat surfaces you put stuff on). The kanji ๅฐ if you look it up in a Japanese dictionary would come up with the definition of "platform" earlier than "counter for machines", which is how it is used here. Words like ๅœŸๅฐ or ๅฐ่ปŠ come to mind.
The other problem in this case, is that there is another kanji that means "machine", which is ๆฉŸ. According to that anki deck, ๆฉŸ's keyword is also "machine", which makes things confusing. How are these two machines different? Unless WK has something that lets you know "hey, these two have the same keyword but actually they're different, here's how:", then imo you're getting ripped off.

Thanks! Just some things I spotted.
ๅคงใ—ใŸใ‚‚ใฎใจๆ€ใ†ๅคงใ—ใŸใ“ใจใ ใจๆ€ใ†
Small structure issue here, nouns and nominalized sentences need ใ  before ใจๆ€ใ†.
As for why ใ“ใจ instead of ใ‚‚ใฎ, ใ“ใจ generally refers to a more abstract "thing", in this case the action of teaching something. Generally you'd use this with concepts as opposed to physical objects, where ใ‚‚ใฎ would be more commonly used. You ใ“ใจ correctly in the second sentence.
ไป–ไบบใ‚’ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ไป–ไบบใซๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹
This doesn't work here very well because ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ generally wants something TO BE taught as its object, instead of people. So you could say ๆ•ฐๅญฆใ‚’ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ or ่จ€่ชžๅญฆใ‚’ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹, and the objects, as specified by ใ‚’, would be maths and liguistics. If you want to specify the audience that will receive the effects of the action you have to use ใซ.

And actually it would be a bit better to use a full stop here and continue the next part as its own sentence. Someone can correct me here but I feel like you'd want a stronger connection between two er, sentences(?) than just plain form.

So maybe something like this:
ๅคงใ—ใŸใ“ใจใ ใจๆ€ใ†ใ€‚ไป–ไบบใซๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ใฎใฏ็ฐกๅ˜ใชใ“ใจใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ€‚
But it feels a bit more stiff now, texting on the internet is its own language. Hopefully this didn't take too much away from the intended message.

Sorry to ask a strange question, but does English have interesting phrases which can be taken two ways as emphatic negation and as double negative (=affirmation)?

While it's true that on a few occasions I've accidentally used the radical word instead of the actual kanji meaning I think that this is very rare as the radical words are usually the same as kanji meaning. Also, WK isn't just for kanji, they have 3x as many vocab as they have kanji. Maybe they should have more? idk

Australian English has a funny thing with negatives and affirmatives.
Yeah nah = no
Nah yeah = yes
But it's quite different from what you're looking for.

>>214376482
That's the issue though, you wouldn't know that the radical word is different from the kanji meaning unless you tripped over it.
Also I'm aware of the vocab bit, I assume it's like 7000-8000 words? It's not the worst thing ever but like I said, very locked down. Once you get into their system it's hard to port your knowledge base into a more freeform system like Anki (because of sunk cost) where you can for example, filter for words or kanji that you have problems with and change them around in hopes that it'll help with retention. There's very few one-size-fits-all solutions in education and this is WK's biggest shortfall. If it works it works and if it doesn't then you're fucked and stuck paying for the month.
At any rate if it works for you then that's good enough.

I feel like in ๅฃ่ชž people often casually just drop ใ  before ใจๆ€ใ† regardless of whether it should be there or not just because it's easier, I could be wrong though, but thats why I dropped it.

This will be useful. I can't say I've thought much about it until now. I've just generally defaulted to ใ“ใจ most of the time.

This is one of the most difficult things for me to internalize. Poor usage of particles is probably the number one mistake of westerners. It's easy to mess up in various sentence structures even if I kind of know it. It is helpful to have it pointed out though so I can correct it. I think I just need to output more so I get more oops moments. I rewrite my particles every now and then because I notice it's completely wrong.

Thank you so much for the help!

The main problem with WK (other than the rigid system that made me loathe using the site) is the words it teaches you are pretty much only for learning those kanji. I got way more out of doing my self mined words in anki than I did most words in WK.
You learn so many nearly useless words in WK for months on end (or even years for most people) when in comparison to that people could pick up some slow paced shoujo romance and mine most of ๆ—ฅๅธธไผš่ฉฑ words immediately with no delay and immerse like crazy just for fun which makes you never forget any of the words. Meanwhile wanikani placed ๅฏ‚ใ—ใ„ at level 56 because of the kanji. One of the most common words you'll ever see which would take you a year to get to if you go max speed, but which realistically would take most WK users 2-3 years if not more. I'm sure you've already learned that word without WK which kind of goes to show how silly the system is.

>I feel like in ๅฃ่ชž people often casually just drop ใ  before ใจๆ€ใ†
Yeah I don't have any issues with that, but I feel like it's more of a spoken thing. When you're speaking it makes sense to abbreviate things because you're trying to keep the conversation tempo up (this is partly why things like ใ‚‰่„ฑใŽ่จ€่‘‰) happen. But when written it immediately stands out which is why I corrected it. I guess we just didn't match vibes here.

Actually I take that back here, I consulted with my wife and she says ๅคงใ—ใŸใ‚‚ใฎใ  works better than ใ“ใจ. I guess I should brush up on this as well.
>Poor usage of particles is probably the number one mistake of westerners
For this one I actually use a corpus to check what words are used with what particles if I'm not sure. I used to make a mistake a while back where I'd say ใƒซใƒผใƒซใ‚’ๅพ“ใ† because that made sense to me in my english-explained brain, but then I looked it up after someone corrected me and I've never forgotten it since (it's supposed to be ใƒซใƒผใƒซใซๅพ“ใ†).

I don't know how to explain why I picked ใ‚‚ใฎ that time. It just felt right for the situation for some unknown reason. I almost never use it either.

>ใ‚‰ๆŠœใ is difficult to use
This is one is really simple and you'd be right to think of it as getting lazy with your conjugations. Potential verbs can get quite messy phonetically because of all the tapped Rs you have to do in quick succession (ใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹), so you just pluck out the ใ‚‰ so you're left with:
้ฃŸในใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹--->้ฃŸในใ‚Œใ‚‹
ๆฅใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹--->ๆฅใ‚Œใ‚‹
่ตทใใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹--->่ตทใใ‚Œใ‚‹
ๅฏใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹--->ๅฏใ‚Œใ‚‹
I feel like these three are common enough that textbooks will just end up presenting them as exception verbs a decade or two from now.
Also in a sort of similar vein, I've seen a lot of Japanese use I-adjective conjugations for Na-adjectives and nouns, such as:
ใใ‚Œใ„ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„--->ใใ‚Œใ„ใใชใ„
็„ก็†ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใ„--->็„ก็†ใใชใ„
(Especially common as interrogatives, ใ“ใ‚Œใ€็„ก็†ใใญ?)
This is goes super bad into ่‹ฅ่€…่จ€่‘‰ territory though which, like, linguists talk about and other people hate? Your mileage may vary depending on who's listening if you use these.
>I don't know how to explain why I picked
>It just felt right for the situation for some unknown reason
This shit happens to me so often at this point I struggle to understand how I ever got here.
I can speak well but if you were to interrogate every decision I made I think 99% of my answers would be "cause it felt right" which is both a blessing and a curse and also completely useless when you're trying to explain shit to others which is why I really struggle with some questions the students have.
>Oh this is nice.
For the ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ thing specifically, if you look it up you'll see that most particles are split between ใ‚’ and ใซใ€ and if you click the tab that pairs ๆ•™ใˆใ‚‹ with ใซ you'll have your answer right there. This is super nice cause it has tons of example sentences and you can skip having to ask a guy for a clarification. It's all scraped from stuff like Yahoo Chiebukuro and books/novels so it's all pretty contemporary Japanese.

This has reminded me that an assistant language teacher (native English speaker) corrected me when I mistook "listen to the music" for "listen the music" when I was in school.
I thought "listen the music" was grammatically correct since the act of listening to the music is ้Ÿณๆฅฝใ‚’่žใ, not ้Ÿณๆฅฝใซ่žใ in Japanese.

Learn by doing.
Your phone settings should be Japanese.
Your computer should be using Japanese locale.
You should watch Japanese television and media as often as possible.
Supplement with study of grammar while using your mother tongue.

I start my uni induction tomorrow, i used to suffer real bad with anxiety too but thankfully im mostly over it.

Best advice i can give you is "take a moment".

What i mean by that is, if you're ever panicking or worried, stand up straight, unfurrow your brow, slacken your shoulders and breathe in and out slowly for a few seconds. Close your eyes if you need to. Then try to think clearly, ask yourself stuff like "am i worried about something thats a big deal?" or "im ok right now, aren't i? im not in harms way, im cool".
Go to a bathroom qubical or just somewhere quiet to do this if you need to. This helped quite a bit back in the day and now i dont even have to do it anymore.
Just take a minute or something, it'll pass and you can carry on about your day.

Good luck with uni anon.

I was thinking about what the equivalent of "better late than never" would be in Japanese. Before looking it up, I tried to figure out a similar sentence myself and came up with ้…ใใฆใ‚‚ใšใฃใจใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Šใพใ—ใ€‚Does this make sense? I think I would use this if something independent of me happens later than expected. And if it's instead something I did late, I'd replace the ใชใ„ with ใ—ใชใ„ใ€‚Does this make sense?

Something feels off with the phrase.
If I'm not mistaken, ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ท is used in the sense of "better than nothing"

>I have 3 bucks buck but better than nothing.
>3ใƒ‰ใƒซใ—ใ‹ๆŒใฃใฆใชใ„ใ‘ใฉใ€ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ทใ

When it comes to "better late than never," it depends on the context and case how to say the phrase in Japanese.

If someone did their homework at the last minute and you'd like to tell them "better late than never" in Japanese, you could say:
>้…ใใฆใ‚‚ใ—ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ทใ
or
>้…ใใฆใ‚‚ใ‚„ใ‚‰ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ทใ

On the other hand, if someone arrived at school later than the scheduled/ time and you'd like to tell them "better than never," you could say:
>้…ใ‚Œใฆใ‚‚ๆฅใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ทใ

By the way, ้…ใใจใ‚‚ใ—ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Šใƒžใ‚ท suggested by jisho.org sounds kind of stiff to me.
In my opinion, ้…ใใฆใ‚‚ is widely used over ้…ใใจใ‚‚ in everyday conversation.

Thank you for the explanation! I see I was thinking about ใชใ„ the wrong way.

In the homework and coming to school examples, someone is actively doing something (doing their homework, or coming to school). If instead some desired event is happening late, would you just use the relevant verb for that event? For example, if it finally rains after a long dry season:
>้…ใใฆใ‚‚้™ใ‚‰ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Š(ใฏ)ใƒžใ‚ทใ

>By the way, ้…ใใจใ‚‚ใ—ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ‚Šใƒžใ‚ท suggested by jisho.org sounds kind of stiff to me.
I also think it feels stiff, but not sure if I can explain why. It sounds old fashioned or how a character with ไธญไบŒ็—… might speak.

The translation for ๅ…ถใƒŽๅผ seems to be Part 2.
From what I gathered, ๅผ is 2 and is used in documents and ๅ…ถใƒŽ(ใใฎ) can mean part. According to BCCWJ the latter is rarely used.
Anyways, my question is: do you prefer tea or coffe?

Cure Dolly (RIP) was a japanese teacher vtuber that made great grammar introductory videos and also some rants on how japanese is taught on schools and by Tae Kim specifically. I personally can vouch for her content, it's great and way better than whatever fanfiction of grammar Tae Kim came up. Her videos are arguably more accurate to how Japanese is taught in actual japanese schools, and the carriage train model works wonders.

I'll try to explain why ็”ณใ—่จณใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ is more polite and formal than ใ”ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ•ใ„.

ใ”ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ•ใ„ consists of ๅพกๅ…(ใ”ใ‚ใ‚“) + ็‚บใ•ใ„(ใชใ•ใ„).
ๅพกๅ… is a the act of forgiving someone for their sin or mistake.

The ็‚บใ•ใ„ here is the shortened form of ็‚บใ•ใ„ใพใ›, which is combination of ็‚บใ•ใ‚‹ (the honorific form of ็‚บใ‚‹[ใ™ใ‚‹] / ็‚บใ™[ใชใ™]) and ใพใ› (the imperative form of ใพใ™).

I mean, ใ”ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ•ใ„ ends up giving the impression that you politely order someone to forgive you for your sin or mistake.

On the other hand, ็”ณใ—่จณใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ consists of ็”ณใ—่จณ(ใ‚‚ใ†ใ—ใ‚ใ‘) + ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“.
็”ณใ—่จณ is the act of excusing yourself for something.
ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ is the most polite way of saying ใชใ„.
In a word, ็”ณใ—่จณใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ means you have no excuse for your sin or mistake.
This gives the impression that you admit your sin or mistake with sincerity.

As a result, ใ”ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ•ใ„ is used in casual settings whereas ็”ณใ—่จณใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ is used in formal settings.

Interesting how ๅ… is the ๆผข่ชž word for forgiveness. Usually, words from the courtly Literary Chinese language are more formal than words from Old Japanese.

In English we have the words "forgive me" and "pardon me". "forgive me" being from the medieval vulgar language Anglo-Saxon, while "pardon" is from the medieval courtly language, Anglo-Norman.

The Norman "pardon me" sounds more formal, but also more stilted and legal. While the Saxon "forgive me" and "sorry" sounds more vulgar, but also more sincere because of that.
So even in a formal setting "Please forgive me" sounds more grave than "Please pardon me". I wonder if its the same.
