General to discuss fully semi-automatic devices, such as the forced reset trigger (FRT) and super safety (SS).

News:
>ATF/DoJ settled with RBT
>cuck states MALDING
>RBT suing everyone who makes FRTs or SSs
>Atrius Super Selektors have loooong wait times, but are shipping, with ambis coming soon

Is it legal? Yes! Unless you live in a cuck state.

You've heard of FRTs, but what's a "super safety"?
>like an FRT, but a different mechanism (the safety)
>cheaper than an FRT
>$90-$120 for full drop-in kit
>3D printable or CNC (recommend stainless/4140)
>most are 3 position cross-bolt safety
>left is safe, right is semi, middle is fully semi-automic
>Atrius now shipping the only super safety that operates like a normal AR safety selector

How it works:
https://youtu.be/KIxsnh2fFTo

To make an AR-15 super safe you'll need:
>M16 style/"full auto" bolt carrier group
>H3 or H2 buffer weight (will do 600-750 rpm of 5.56)
>"low shelf" lower receiver
>SS
>any AR trigger so long as you give it an SS cut

Have you 100% used a completely closed back square back ideally S marked Schmid tool mil spec trigger? Low shelf lower? M16 BCG?

Also at this point there is the possibility you've bent your lever out of spec. Happened to me. once it is bent out of spec, it won't reset any more. Inspect carefully. If there are signs of cracking or wear on the top convex face of the lever, that could indicate possibly it has been bent out of spec.

My first Atrius lever wasn't really working, I was trying to force it into various combinations of lowers and uppers. It eventually bent, and stopped working entirely. I got a replacement, and just hit 800 malfunction free rounds yesterday.

Anybody have a gif or webm of how a forced reset trigger works? I think I follow from OPโ€™s pic - the white part pushes the back of the trigger down and forcibly resets it, and releases the disconnector from the hammer. But then how if the whit epicene is pushing down on the back of the trigger, forcing it into one position, how do you pull it again for the next shot?

>But then how if the whit epicene is pushing down on the back of the trigger, forcing it into one position,
It doesn't "force it into one position", it resets the trigger (what you would normally do manually by moving your finger forward). Since the trigger is reset, if you continue to apply pressure to the trigger you will thus pull the trigger again and the cycle continues until you release your finger or the mag is empty

Yeah I get all that, I just dont know how the forcing part that forces the trigger to reset lets up to allow slack for the trigger to move backwards again. Surely the reset happens after the bolt is in battery.

Yeah I REALLY wish they would just bite the bullet and eat the machine time and tool costs to make them out of stronger steel. I would also pay the increased cost.

>how that could have happened
Normal super safety break/bend all the time in the same spot that people are reporting Atrius Dev levers to break/bend, except due to the design the Atrius Levers are even more thin and so even more prone to that issue.

If you're at the point where the forced reset isn't happening by hand cycling in a LARGE variety of upper/lower/BCG/FCG combos, I had a similar experience and it was a bent/broken lever that originally started bending when I tried to get it working in a fuggged up setup.

>Surely the reset happens after the bolt is in battery.
No. The trigger is forced to reset mid-cycle (when the BCG is in the rearmost position), the BCG during its travel rearward depresses the SS/FRT lever which forces the trigger to reset. The trigger is not functional at this point, as the SS cam/FRT innards doesn't allow the trigger sear to disconnect until the SS/FRT lever has been fully returned to the forward position (via the BCG returning forward).

what's cool about this is that you don't have to buy a normal trip bar that requires hammering pins in and weren't removable. Also you can use a normal SS instead of the DTT meaning you can use the Geissele mcx trigger. I bet with this you dont even have to remove the firing pin latch.

I really hope the new 3 POS drop in reset trigger gets made and supported like the SS of today or the atrius variant becomes open source.

at the begining of the vid is vid from the mfg showing how it works, plus an interview on why they settled the case
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBgNZGBKQjU
The key is the trigger is forced forward slightly (thus not a sustained pull, but a reversal in direction), and with sustained finger pressure you will pull the trigger again, it just happens very quickly and meets the legal definition of semi auto.

Not really, since itโ€™s open bolt (feds will probably deem a semi auto one an mg). A closed bolt luty would basically just be an entirely different gun. I think the FGC-9 can get super-safed

Is there anything I can do to function check my SS at home? The only place I can shoot it is 4+ hours away, and I'm going next month but don't really feel like bringing my dremel and all my tools if i have to shave the receiver or polish something.
It's an 11.5 fsb thats wildly overgassed, but I have an H2 buffer, G$ spring, and bootleg bcg. Suppressed. Just wanna run it and make sure it works.

You can manually cycle it to check the reset but in all probability you are going to get bolt bounce. I have a very similar setup and the two independent solutions to bolt bounce were a JP silent captured spring and a faxon lightweight bolt carrier.

Thanks buddy. I'll try it as is I guess before throwing money at it. Its runs pretty good as is, it resets just cycling it by hand; so I was hoping not to have to do too much to it. But oh well, I'm not going to be dumping mags through all my guns so i guess its fine to have to tune for this.

Yeah when my lever bent they shipped the replacement pretty quick, without fuss. Replacement is going strong so far. Fingers crossed it doesn't bend or break. My goal is to just leave it in the current setup and not swap it around to others to help prevent it from accidentally being bent by an setup where the tolerance stacking results in the interfeterence which causes the damage.

Sadly untrue. The old 55grs would tear up cans and their whole lineup of ammo has issues with QC. For example, the other day I pulled out a 75gr round with damaged brass on the neck of the case and a 124gr with oxidation on its case, bear in mind these were from fresh boxes. I wish I could overlook it but for now I'm sticking to Monarch, S&B, and Blazer for target ammo

Just got back from doing an endurance test with my PSA AR9 with a SS
>2 magpul 27s and 2 ETS 32s
>loaded with 115gr Monarch
>3 stoppages on the first mag, 1 stovepipe and 2 failures to reset (ETS)
>mags 2 and 3 ran flawlessly (both Magpul)
>1 failure to reset on mag 4 (ETS)
Given the data I've so far collected there's no noticeable change on reliability or stoppage rates between 124 and 115 (147 remains untested). Also it can run Hornady American Gunner but only if you have an FMJ as your first round, somehow it hates starting on a JHP. Unrelated but my shitty UTG red dot shrugged off a 38 from a carbine, subsequent shots were able to peirce the body but none were able to completely blow through

ALL of the following can be done at home with no ammo required
>what is a functions check
Step 1: Place on safe, charge bolt, pull trigger
>nothing happens; success!
>something happens; you fucked up
If success, then;
Step 2: place on semi, charge bolt, pull trigger
>hammer falls, release trigger to reset; success
>hammer falls, trigger does not reset; check your trigger assembly, something isn't working right
>hammer doesn't fall, trigger doesn't reset; check safety position or check trigger assembly
If success, then
Step 3: place on SS/FR, charge bolt, pull trigger
>keeping pressure on trigger; hammer falls, charge bolt again, trigger will reset automatically as bolt is cycled, as bolt goes forward, trigger will be pressed to the rear and hammer will fall again: repeat ad nauseum
>if any of the above things do not happen, check your assemblies to make sure it is installed correctly, everything is lubed/greased adequately, no parts out of spec, no binding, no breaks or bends, etc
>if that doesn't work, come back here
If these instructions on how to do a functions check don't make sense, find a youtube video on it. It's stupid simple, if the function check works without issues, your SS/FRT should be working properly, barring issues with gas, buffer, etc in which case, do more reading

Struggling to get my FRT/SS host setup tuned

Barrel is a Rosco 10.3" CL SOCOM profile
BCG is a Bootleg 4 position adjustable
Current setup is an H3 buffer with a flatwire spring. With B&T PrintX Mini 556K suppressor, PMC Bronze brass cased ammo, and the gas setting fully open, it has run flawlessly for 800 rounds or so. No malfs, no hammer follow light primer strikes, all in forced reset mode.

The other day I tried running it without the can, all else held constant, and it wouldn't force the reset, and it barely was locking back on an empty mag. It was doing this weird partial lock back, probably 1/2" forward of the typical locked back empty mag position.

What setup should I try next? I don't mind having to adjust the gas on the carrier between suppressed and unsuppressed.
I was thinking maybe an H1 or even H2, maybe with a standard carbine spring and with the can on running the BCG on one of the restricted gas settings, then with the can off having to open it to fully unsuppressed setting?

The heart of the issue to me seems that the Bootleg adjustable carrier doesn't have "fine" enough gradations in its adjustment. The amount of gas difference between fully open and just one setting over towards suppressed reduces the gas way too much.

specifically regarding light primer strike, I wouldnt think the buffer has much to do with that, I was refering to your partial lock back experience which probably has something to do with your FRT experiences as well.

I had a build once with light primer springs with an FRT, I replaced it with wolff higher power hammer springs and that worked well, try that.

I have several, and I've shot probably north of 15k rounds through them. I like them. They definitely adjust the gas. Depending on barrel length, port size, buffer weight, and spring strength I have found, especially as of recently, that the adjustment gradations are not fine enough. I wish it had a more "linear" feel to it (possibly not actually linear, but my point is that the adjustment to the weapon behavior seems to jump by large amounts even for small adjustments) and or maybe another setting or two (5 or 6 positions total), but not more settings on the extreme ends of the adjustment, like I said just more gradation.

I've see you mention JP captured springs for a while. If that works for that's cool but it's really not necessary unless there is some other deficiency in your build or you're chasing high ROF. I have a heavy barrel rifle length gas 16" build running perfectly in SS with normal milspec parts (apart from the SS itself).

Exactly why FRTs and SSs wonโ€™t be reclassified as machine guns again. The ATF lost in court. If the legal definition is changed, youโ€™d have to reopen the MG registry for grandfathering in existing ones at a minimum. If the registry is reopened, itโ€™s easy to challenge Hughes as a whole. If Hughes goes away the likelihood of the NFA going away entirely is increased dramatically.

The BATFags wonโ€™t risk the NFA getting axed so theyโ€™ll have to live with this stuff being a workaround.

they're virtually identical to full auto
when they first came out people had the same opinion of them as binary triggers and bump stocks
but then people started noticing that these devices were keeping up with full auto, to the point where someone could deck out their own AR and put one of these in them and have a rifle even more capable than a military issued m4 or m16
>>64000831

extremely
>is it safe
as safe as full auto
>how easy is it to use
flick the lever or push the button, and pull the trigger
>what are some things that you might want to consider before purchasing
make sure you have the right BCG, lower receiver, and buffer tube, and also think about what accessories you have will affect the rate of fire
also i'm gonna add that full auto is probably more useful for civilians than in a military context, purely because civilian self defense is at much closer ranges where putting bullets into a target faster is more important than careful precision fire

No, they're quite serious mechanisms. Whatever reason you'd have to put multiple rounds downrange in short order, SS/FRTs can accommodate that. But its usage defines purpose, ergo it can be both. Much like how a nuke becomes a tactical or strategic weapon depending on where you use it, the FRT can be both a serious tool and a very unserious toy depending on what you want to hose bullets into
>>64000831
>Is it reliable
Usually, with a properly weighted buffer and bcg
>is it safe
No less than a normal F/A
>How easy is it to use
Installation is the hard part given that it takes a lot of filing to get to an exact fit and disassembling and reassembling an AR trigger group repeatedly is a PITA. After that, it's as hard as controlling any F/A and adapting to a slightly different control scheme
>what are some considerations
Ammo cost. You're right it burns through ammo fast and if you don't put it in a cheap gun to feed you're gonna go broke fast. It's why I think they shine in PCCs since 9mm is around a quarter per round and they're very low recoil, meaning you're unlikely to have the gun jump out of your arms

IMO, and this doesn't go for ALL instantiations of FRT/SS/FRS forced reset mechanisms, but it does go for some and increasingly more, they're not "gimmicks" nor are they "useless". They're at the point in their development where IMO they're on par with say like a budget nitride bear creek arsenal or Anderson AR15, or like a PSA AK. They're in this interesting space where they are certainly not true military/duty/2A relevant tools with all the R&D and T&E that is necessary to call something a real firearm or piece of life saving liberty maintaining equipment, but they're also not strictly speaking "toys" or "gimmicks".

With some tuning and component selection there are plenty of people myself included who are getting upwards of 1000 rounds of flawless function out of their forced reset setups. On the other hand, myself included, there are people that are getting broken components out of the box or systems that are not functioning reliably from the start. In that sense they're like a PSA AK or a budget cheap AR15.

Am I confident it is going to make it 10k rounds or 30k rounds or 90k rounds like a real HK MP5 or Russian AKM or Colt M4? Ehh, it might, but probably not. Is it going in that direction? Hopefully?

NTA but reliability is not an issue really, it's just that when you deviate from the 20" barrel, rifle gas, rifle buffer system that the M16 was designed around you need to make other adjustments, particularly when you are talking about running FA/SS. The issues are not with the SS per se; if you dropped a typical AR upper on a FA lower you'd have the same issues with bolt bounce to address most likely.

IMO it is probably best to go from the ground up with a fully pocketed lower, silent captured spring, and a suppressor from the beginning. You'll get enough gas pressure to cycle reliably and you won't be troubled by bolt bounce in my (considerable) experience.

I wouldn't say that reliability is a concern even after fine tuning. I would say that true duty/military/2A purpose grade longevity is a concern, even after you get it properly tuned and set up and running.

My first Atrius Dev Selektor didn't work out of the box, probably because I tried to shoehorn it into an fucked up 80% lower, and so the tolerance stacking of various parts resulted in a bent/broken lever that wouldn't force reset. Atrius sent me a fresh brand new lever, I put that into ONE and ONE setup only, mil spec shit across the board basically, and it has been flawless now for 800 rounds. It is showing some wear though that I don't like, so like I said, LONG term longevity isn't determined yet, and is my main concern.
>what does it look like when one has a malfunction or fails
Lots of variety here man. They can malfunction like a typical machine gun, light primer strike from bolt bounce etc, stovepipes and failures to eject perhaps if the timing is off.
They can also break in ways that a real MG can't because they use parts that real MGs don't. But real MGs can break in ways that an FRT can't, because real MGs use parts that FRT systems don't have.

See what I'm getting at?

Anyway, they're at the point now where they basically work, like I said, about as good as a budget basic shitty bear creek or anderson AR15, or a PSA AK, meaning you absolutely ought to get one at the very least for the fun of it, and to help the tech develop and proliferate so as to get ahead of grabber bans in the future etc.

Anyone got tips for eliminating LPS on an FRT in an AK? I'm getting one LPS per 100 rounds or so.

Also 2nd Atrius Dev lever starting to show signs of cracks. Still functioning well though, just about to hit 1000 rounds.

It LPS though if not using an H2 or H3 buffer.

He has an atrius selector, which is not the same thing as the FRT (which is a drop in cassette trigger). Atrius selector is a somewhat flimsy design with questionable material quality which is why people have been having issues. The FRT as a unit is more mechanically complex, though more robust in regards to the lever (which is the part that actually forces reset). Super safeties are by far the most robust (and the most mechanically simple) and have basically no longevity concerns when using appropriate materials, and many vendors offer them in such materials (d2/s2 tool steel).

M16 pocket is irrelevant and does not affect function, you just need a low shelf. There is a simple process to gauge if your lower will work. 20" barrel/rifle gas also isn't important, in fact the shorter gas systems tend to be a bit more reliable.

I'm aware that all you need is a low shelf; I have 6 ARs, one was an 80%, two were high shelf that I milled into low shelf (fuck LMT), two were low shelf to start, and one is fully pocketed. There can be more to it than just being low/high shelf, which is why I'd say get a fully pocketed lower to avoid potential headaches if you build from scratch. For one thing, there's no standard low shelf height and it can be variable or not quite low enough. For another, non pocketed low shelf lowers tend to have irregular receiver thicknesses, which means modifying the SS centering block.

It is certainly true that you don't need a full pocket but I think it is worth the (slight) extra expense.

Not really. I also have 6 AR's and played around with super safeties in those different receivers, it's really just that simple. If you were worried about it you could lightly handle file a chamfer into the edge of the shelf to be 100% sure you won't have clearance issues, but it didn't actually affect function at all for super safety use.

you bought the receivers, why are you mad at LMT?

I bought them many years ago, before super safeties existed. They just shouldn't have made high shelf lowers. The centering blocks are certainly useful and have been effective at preventing binding. I'm guessing you haven't tried them. A fully pocketed lower is guaranteed to have enough clearance and won't have the wacky side wall thickness variation you get with a typical low shelf.

Look, I obviously made them work with a low shelf lowers but every one required fiddling with that the full pocket didn't. Do as thou wilt.

What fiddling did you have to do with the two actual low shelf lowers you had?
Centering blocks just aren't necessary if everything's installed correctly and in spec. Now you certainly could have had some out of spec lowers/parts but that's an issue independent of the receiver shelf height or whether it has a pocket.

The two independent issues that I had were the low shelf not actually being low enough, thus requiring a chamfer cut, and the receiver wall thickness being irregular. You've probably noticed that a pocketed lower will have a thin, uniform side wall but a high/low shelf will be thickened in parts. I think that the binding issue actually is caused by the variable thickness because it can kick the lever over and under the bolt carrier. The centering blocks fix that, but hogging out the sides would probably be ideal. Not gonna do any more milling though.

>low shelf not actually being low enough, thus requiring a chamfer cut
it's possible, what brand lowers did you use? I did do that cut on a couple of my lowers for peace of mind though it wasn't actually necessary (I had some dragging issues but it was caused by an out of spec hammer). It's fairly easy to check, with the SS installed and lever in the rear most position it should rest easily on a 1/8" punch/pin gauge. If you do need to the extra clearance its barely ten minutes with a hand file. Not something I would worry about tracking down a m16 pocket for when most normal low shelf receivers will work fine.
M16 pocket is also not necessary for cassette FRT triggers.
>high/low shelf will be thickened in parts. I think that the binding issue actually is caused by the variable thickness because it can kick the lever over and under the bolt carrier.
how does that make any sense? A thicker receiver wall would mean less play in the super safety and less chance of anything binding. The centering block is to prevent it from snagging on the upper receiver, though is not necessary if you already have the appropriate clearance or have filed out the uppers sear shelf slightly.

Because it isn't just that they are thicker, they are also variable. I think that the lever can bounce across the receiver because it ramps off the irregular receiver wall profile. I suppose it could be a dicked up spec problem. I never had any issues with the FN, but my Sedra lower is a liability without the centering block. Once I put that in it has run like a sewing machine.

Well that's the thing, there's no actual spec for low or high shelf or sear block lowers, they are just manufacturer derived to suit their needs. They could be a lot of different shapes internally and still work on semi auto. Sedra is old school. It is my C7 and I'd guess it is at least 40 years old. Once I fixed the binding issue it has been fantastic.

I haven't been able to get a good full mag SS burst yet due to no stock/brace. So it mostly does 2 to 3 round SS bursts. I typically don't feel the first shots recoil until the 2nd or 3rd shot if that helps you guess the fire rate lol. I also have a brace otw so I'll be able to fire it for longer without worrying about hitting the range ceiling/target mounts soon lol. And it's a B&T 12in can.

>>64009958

Probably no SBR, just brace for now since I hate the travel restrictions of SBRs. I had a 120ยฐ locking piece installed but it's because I had the barrel swapped to a true mp5sd barrel since it was one of the ap5-sd's from century that had the mp5k barrel installed. I'm not too sure about others but so far mine has ran great for 300 rounds SS & about 800 normal semi. I'll be shooting it more though. I did have to grind the ar15 hammer down using the jig in the files and clearance the ejector

I have an AUG with an ARID trigger and super safety. I drilled the stock.

As long as the trigger linkage is adjusted properly it has worked well. I have the metal setup and have had no real issues yet, although apparently metal=bad so idk

I also have an SP5 with Lee lower that has functioned flawlessly and apparently thatโ€™s supposed to cause issues but I havenโ€™t seen it

What did adjusting the trigger linkage entail? I remember messing with the trigger bar when I installed my arid trigger, but I have no idea if that entails the same process.

Iโ€™ve considered getting one of the new NATO stocks with bolt release, but I also want to get the new A1 M3 receivers so I might as well just get a new AUG. But then if I get one of those, do the aftermarket drop in AR triggers work for the NATO stocks? Will the stock crack? Idk

>Youโ€™re the retard, retard. Full auto in non belt-fed weapons is only practical at close ranges. I.e. home defense. The other instance is ambushes where you want max volume of fire and then GTFO. Home defense and guerrilla fighting are basically the two places a civilian would ever use their AR type rifles against other humans. Those are the two spots full auto excels.

Don't know why I'm being called retard, mongoloid. I didn't drop a single hard r here,

Full auto is useless for 99% of encounters you will have. FRTs are NOT full auto which should be very clear to anyone who has messed around and looked at how they work, they are a simulacrum of full auto but the gun doesn't function by itself and requires some amount of finesse to get the trigger to fire. That kind of uncertainty is why a military or institutional user doesn't use them, they use proper full auto. If I wanted to pump bullets down a hallway a binary trigger system (or even just a really high quality trigger) is going to be better for ensuring I can place shots where they need to be but even the binary triggers available are just toys.

there were two advantages to FRTs, one was that it was the only way to get fully semi-auto out of the sig mcx platform and the fact that it works in high shelf lowers.

Since the recent innovation of the new mcx slip, which allows for SS usage, the only advantage now is the high shelf lower ability, but I feel though if you have enough money to buy the FRT, you can just buy a compatible lower.

There are other disadvantages of the FRT though, cost, the limited trigger options, the trigger housing can gunk up causing it to not work and giving money to a company that's currently well deserved hate, if you can about that sort of thing.

Except their enforcement might not even be their own choice, as my understanding of the settlement agreement they had with the ATF was that they "have to" protect their IP via litigation, but then it is confusing because anyone with just a handful of braincells can see that the super safety and the super selektor are totally different mechanisms to force the reset of the trigger than the rare breed design, so their suits are either a) The will of the ATF or b) Frivolous and unfounded, in either case, lame and gay.

Only the Atrius has a cracking problem, the Hoffman style SS is extremely durable. And, as discussed at length, their patent suit against the makers of Hoffman style super safeties is totally invalid and they know it.

A dickhead prosecutor can try always try to argue that some particular modification aggrivates rhe circumstances. What matters is can they prove the elements of the crime and disprove your defense? The fear I would have, particularly with a 3 position FRT, is a dickhead prosecutor using the fact that you used an FRT not merely as an aggravator but as evidence of intent/lack of fear in the moment. E.g. "and you took the time to switch from safe to semi to FRT, correct? Why did you take the tine to do that if you feared for your life?".

it would optically be a nightmare, people had the fact that they used 10mm, ar15 in general or anything "tactical" as a way to convey aggressiveness. Usually a stock gun with no modifications with "defensive ammo" nothing called like R.I.P or "super killem's" bullshit

is using a shotgun really better in court compared to an ar 15?
If i want to maximize the optics of the situation, i would think a wooden furniture pump shotgun would be the best. Would attaching a flashlight to it hinder my case?
Sorry for all the questions, my only friend in law does patent law.

the best optics would be a non tactical shotgun with ammo that says defense on it

At the end of the day though, judged by whatever than carried by blah blah blah

No. Thereโ€™s never been a single case that the choice of gun mattered. Itโ€™s justifiable lethal force or itโ€™s not.

Sometimes people quote a mock jury done by law students but what they ignore is the students were instructed that the shooter was already guilty. Among other problems but thatโ€™s the most egregious.

depends on what you mean by matter, what I was saying is that it would be used against you optically, I wasn't saying that it would be the decision maker

Appearance of the gun matters very little compared to your actions and statements. Again, if you have "satan nigger rape" engraved on the side of your gun the prosecutor can talk about it, and it's probably not going to help, but ultimately the only thing that matters is do the 12 randos in the jury think you reasonably feared for your life or not.

Then it doesnโ€™t matter. I could shoot a Jamal with โ€œI hate niggersโ€ engraved on my dust cover and that would look bad. It would not result in my getting convicted in an otherwise legal home defense shooting.
