It's best to do it. It gives you a baseline of what to expect and shouldn't be the only training you do but it does give you some basics.

That said, the exercises you go through are available online, and you can buy self-learning expanded motorcycle lessons. Most of what you'll be doing are slow-speed maneuvers and you should expect to drop the bike a lot and often while doing them.

It's a little bit of everything, It's keeping distance to brake/evade but also keeping distance from the lane next to you, distance from the driver behind you (This is very important), available distance on the shoulder so you have places to swerve to in order to avoid hazards, 'Space Cushion' as a definition is any available space which you can be sure will be available to you, and it changes moment-to-moment and depends on your line.

110, 120 kph keeps pace but drivers don't keep pace. Drivers around here will gleefully do 140 on roads marked 100. And you as a rider have to be ready for them by maintaining a space cushion around all potential obstacles and drivers. It's always preferable to give way to drivers using your space cushioning because in a fight for space, the driver always wins. Your advantage is that being a little motorcycle, you can fit it in places drivers wouldn't even consider an escape route like a narrow shoulder.

There's this guy named Dan Fireman which I think this thread hates because he does reactslop but he does in-depth breakdowns of common motorcycle crashes, and they're usually spot-on if you're just learning to ride on the highway. He also does pavement motorcycle lessons for beginners.

The math doesn't work out because you are such a tiny member of the equation of 400 lb bike + 80 mph, just doing stupid math (I don't do any other kind of math) the force acting on the bike and the handlebars at the time of the wobble of a 400 lb bike made of aluminum at 80 MPH is 1,784 pound-feet. So, can you snatch 1,784 pounds? Because that would be the feat needed to act as a solid member of the bike at that time to completely arrest it. Maybe you could slowly edge the weight down to stabilize it, but never act as a solid enough member to stop it on your own.

I think everyone comments on it that a better use of your strength if you're still holding on is to keep the bike upright until the wobble stops. If you keep the throttle rolled off and allow it to decelerate naturally without applying any front brakes (instant crash if you do) the wobble will go away as the bike stabilizes, it just requires you to keep it upright until it does.

Also if you watch Doodle's vid on her crashing, first thing she does is grab the brake which makes it worse while also whiskeying the throttle as it jolts in her hand. The first thing to grab is the clutch, second thing to do is shift to neutral, then apply only rear brake while steering with lean.

/o/kay guys, I need some general advice. if you have 5 minutes for my story i'd be grateful.

>38 yr old single male, employed, EU
>driving cars since 2006
>got my motorcycle licence in 2007, haven't driven a motorcycle since
>riding was super accessible and fun
>but I somehow scared myself out of it by catastrophizing on horror stories about moms in minivans just ramming me off the road while typing on their phones
>been getting the itch for years, now I' finally am able blow money on a (used?) bike without it really hurting my overall financial plans and situation

So, how do I get back into it?
I've put aside money for gear (helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, back protector) and repairs.
The real questions seems to be on what bike to get:
>only interested in naked bikes up to 9000 EUR/USD
>prefer to only buy from dealerships, used bikes arent a problem
>max age, mileage, hp...?

As of right now, the 2025 Kawasaki Z900 or Yamaha MT-09 are what I'm gunning for.

I've been talking to people who drilled the important of normal ABS and cornering ABS into my head. Having looked into it a bit further and seeing how it seems to be able to save inexerperience riders from slides and accidents, it doesn't look like a bad idea.
The downside is having corverning ABS as a "must have" eliminates any pre ~2022 used bikes that I could've gotten for maybe 6000 €/$.
How important is cornering ABS really? Would love to hear some first hand experiences.

Also, are LED headlights overhyped or actually worth it?

TL;DR, I want to get my first bike almost 2 decades after getting the licence and have only a vague idea of where to start and what to get. Any help is appreciated.

This is going to happen anyway, it does to almost everybody. It's been 18 years since you got your license. You're essentially in the same position as somebody deciding on a bike before they've ever been on one, because your riding experience now is going to be totally different from when you were 20. Whatever bike you get, you're going to eventually realize that there are things you don't like about it, things that you want to do that it's bad at, and maybe that you don't actually enjoy doing the stuff it's really good at. It happens and it's just going to suck way harder if you're $9k into a brand new bike and have to think about all the money you're gonna lose if you trade it in on the bike you realize you actually want in 6 months.

You're an older guy, so you might not have to get a super slow beginner bike like people recommend to teenagers with poor impulse control, but get something a little less extreme and a lot cheaper and then decide what you really want to invest in. A used MT-07 will give you basically the same experience but without having to be completely scared shitless of the throttle as a beginner and you should be able to sell it for almost as much as you paid once you figure out what you really want.

Wrenching on the bike, living with the bike, camping with the bike, overcoming adversity with the bike, all that good stuff.
If you only love motorcycle for the adrenaline rush they give you that's fine, but then you'll either die pretty soon or let motorcycles become just another way to get your dose. In other words a passing hobby, or at least not a MAIN hobby.

Please spoonfeed a newfag. Last couple of times i've taken my bike out the front brake lever has been misbehaving, like I can pull it tight and my bike stops but if I keep holding the brake lever it loosens and I can slowly draw it all the way back to my grip and the brake just stops working. The brake fluid looks ok to me as far as colour and level go so I'm not really sure what the problem might be. Any tips?

I would agree with that sentiment generally, but if the WEF kikes are being so brazen with the "you'll own nothing and be happy", I don't believe there isn't a conspiracy at some level for shit to break. I have a buddy with his own shop as well and most of his appliances are 1950s and older. Never serviced and still working. It's insane how high quality things actually were back then and it's not a meme, I've seen it and held it. My 1968 Chrysler is living proof. As far as helmets go, just hit up marketplace. You can find a used shoei for a good price.

Genuinely insane to me people buy new cars for $50k ($600 monthly payments) that are worse in every way in comparison to older cars.
safety is arguably the only factor which new cars are better at, and even that is debatable because of bad visibility is in modern cars.

New cars are obscene. I love my 2024 QX60 but it's a company lease and there's no way in hell I'd pay for it myself. Visibility is atrocious. All the safety features have made it that way and just about necessitate back up cameras. Makes it harder to see bikes as well.
New cars have a lot of convenience and tech features. They're really quiet. They drive nice with the new 9 speed automatic transmissions. That's about it though. I doubt this next generation of cars is going to last very long.
My '68 Chrysler has power sliding front bench seat that still works and all of the cables that operate are encased in copper tubing, just to give you an idea of how much better things were built back then.

The bike generally just wants to go in a straight line. Taking your hands off of the handlebars demonstrates this. It doesn't matter whether the front wheel is currently wobbling or not. When the bike is wobbling, you can't use the front to steer it to keep it in the lane anymore, that's why Doodle went off the road and crashed. That's why most of these death wobble videos that end in a crash happen because they go off the road. The first and foremost thing is to keep the bike upright and controllable.

Here in northern europe i see a lot of bikes with very few kilometers in being sold as used (talking like <10k, usually <5k), even new or kinda expensive ones that maybe even got restricted because the owner couldn't get a full license yet.
or stuff with like 50k kilometers or more, but those are rare.
Italy is the opposite where you see a lot of bikes that had one owner and have a stupid ammount of Kilometers in them being sold only because the owner is getting older or they don't have the space to keep it, the motorcycle culture is very strong in the boot, i know a younger coworker bought a new transalp at the end of last year as hist first ever bike (restricted because he can't get a full A license) and this summer he did italy-romania with it and had so much fun.

In my case i put 5k kilometers on my bike before "selling it" but i didn't use it as a commuter and i had it for like less than 7 months.
If i didn't have problems with registering it here where i live now i would have surely kept it for more but even keeping it in italy would have been a problem so i'm kinda forced in that reguard.

Fair. I commute 30 miles each way and tide a lot on the weekends so miles rack up. Most of my weekend riding happens on my dual sport though tbf

For me riding and driving in New York City is fine, I grew up there so it’s where I learned to do those things and I still live in a city, though obviously a smaller one.
Tomato sauce is about the only thing left of our “Italian origins,” my father married a Spaniard and then so did I.

Do they make cheaper boots that aren't really meant for walking with? I don't really need a sole or any ergonomics i just want the protection

Kinda like how bicycles have shoes that aren't meant for walking

CFMoto is good. The only bad thing that I've heard is that apparently the factory prioritises new builds over replacement parts, so they can be hard to find when something obscure breaks.
Still, I'd go for the Ninja 500. They don't depreciate at all, so you're going to have a much lower lifecycle cost for an extremely similar bike. The 450SR will sound better, feel sportier (especially if you get the 450SR-S) and probably perform better.
But the Ninja 500 will be both better to learn on and better as a forever bike. It also has more third-party modification support, it's easier to find manuals and advice online, and you also just won't have to constantly explain to everyone how your bike is "actually just as good, and better in some ways!".

It probably isn't relevant to you in Texas, but here in Australia a LOT of people never go beyond the 400/500cc class. And I think it says something that I can't find any CFMoto 450s with more than 10,000km (literally one year of decent ownership) at the moment, while there are a few Kawasaki 400s with 40,000 and 50,000km on them. I don't think they're breaking down, I just think people are upgrading.

Just get a second-hand pair. I gave away a pair of old boots recently. They were the same as new boots, but the sole had worn down so much that my foot would slip out from underneath me when I stopped my bike in the rain. That should suit your requirements perfectly.

There's a guy i know selling two superhawks together for 500 bucks, one in bad shape with a good motor. The other just recently restored with a blown motor. CCT failure. This was like a month ago.
