Once you "convince" King that he should abandon violence and try being nice, he waits for you to act vulnerable and then immediately stabs you in the back. Chapter 1 made it clear that Deltarune isn't going to be as sentimental as Undertale. How could it be? For all the ironic anime trash jokes in Hotland, Undertale was strikingly sincere. Can you imagine a AAA game or Hollywood movie having anything like the True Pacifist ending? A story where the protagonist saves the world and makes friends with everyone by totally embracing pacifism, and it's all played completely straight? If you go back to the first room and talk to Asriel, even he admits that it's not realistic: "There are a lot of Floweys out there. And not everything can be resolved by just being nice." (Pic related most likely - I doubt this bastard is going to be sympathetic or redeemable in any way).

So what's the tone of Deltarune going to be like? Probably less outright cynical than most contemporary media, but Toby Fox has stated himself that it's not going to be a story that will feel like Undertale: "I don't know if I can make you feel that way again, but maybe I can make you feel something else." The somewhat more mature and realistic tone makes it possible that we'll get something kind of like Undertale, about the value of life and love and virtue, but a bit more grounded in reality. That being said, I'm pessimistic. The story doesn't seem like it will have a happy ending. The writing is on the wall (literally in the Dark Sanctuaries) and the whole tone of the game is rather apocalyptic. Likely, the end of the game will have an "optimistic nihilist" message about how everyone's going to die and nothing can meaningfully change, but we should be nice and try to enjoy life anyway. That's the best most writers can come up with these days. I'd love to be wrong, and I'll praise Toby from on high if he actually manages to subvert my expectations without it feeling like an asspull.
