Had a long debate with someone over something I thought fundamentally made sense but it seems I'm in the minority about.
The SOUL is still Kris's SOUL, isn't it? We're just connected to it.
In Undertale, we were connected to Frisk or Chara's SOUL (depending on what theory you go with). In Deltarune, we're connected to Kris's SOUL.
That's why the first hero is "The Cage, WITH Human Soul and Parts". The Human SOUL is part of the cage here and that's Kris's SOUL. We're inside of it, most likely literally "the light inside your SOUL" since the glowing light stuff seems all tied to us (and would play into the Player = Angel stuff).
The alternative explanation would be that Gaster made a whole ass artificial Human SOUL or like literally took our own real SOUL into the game. Both of which sound really dumb to me and that they'd break the rules of what made Human SOULs so special.
It would mean that Gaster was using Kris's SOUL to connect us from the start and was going to put it into the Vessel, but that just seems reasonable to me. Kris probably was meant to have lost their SOUL then and there (maybe as part of the whole "summoning demons" thing), but someone came in and put it back into Kris.

My schizo head canon is that the genocide soul from undertale got transported into the deltarune world when catti and Kris tried to summon a demo.
It then entered Kris and took control of his body and killed dess. we are a new soul Kris summoned (whether by Kris Carol or gastor) and that's why he doesn't trust us and is familiar with how to handle a hostile soul with his birdcage.
In the weird route we confirm his suspicions about souls and the regula route we give him a pleasant surprise with how nice we are but he doesn't trust us fully just yet.

The point of the coughing line is that it happens exclusively when we're No-Hitting the Knight.
It only happens when it is abundantly clear that there's no way for the Knight to hit us.
That's when Kris makes an explicit signal that they're going to end things themselves.
The whole point is so long as we are there, we can theoretically dodge anything unless Kris holds us back or acts without us, which they've done both of many times before.
