Honestly there might be some credence to the Carol is the Knight theory. Considering the knight made The First and Third Sanctuaries where Gerson was basically his original self (or at least an idealized perception of him) and the Gerson in Susie's dark world only saw him for his strength and power it could definitely lean that way. this part. it's weird and unintuitive. look at how much headcanon you've had to write to make it work, both fountains are the same but also different its weird.
my bigger issue though is that it feels like the game gave gerson a sendoff with susie finding his dust and writing the letter to alvin and the boss fight with the dead version of him. and then it just goes back on it at the last moment to bail the heroes out of an unwinnable situation. just didn't work for me.
