I think he had a normal soul until we showed up. My Schizo Theory was that Kris/Carol/Whoever else did their research on Souls and their independent nature, so He and whoever else planned ahead and were expecting you to act out on your own, which is why He's always keeping you in check. Additionally I think they were just expecting to power up Kris' soul for whatever but we showed up.
