This was never a thing in the Classic games btw. Being playable in a side vs. mode doesn't mean anything, or else literally any character you could play against Sonic ever in any game is a "Sonic rival"

I think he's talking about the Storybook games which like... They are stories where Sonic is sent somewhere and he helps the people there. Or, you know, stuff Sonic does on the regular. I think he's just complaining that they're Sonic centric stories and wanted to see the other characters which is not a real criticism
