Unironically this. Baseball is a team sport but it's still mostly based around the individual skills of each player. It gives a storyteller the perfect structure to build the narrative around, everyone more or less gets thier own chance to shine or falter, depending on what the story needs.
Throw in some big flashy anime battles and some titty for good measure, and you've got yourself a moden classic
