I find it's more reliable to avoid seasonals for years at a time and only pick up the things that are still getting threads way later. During the season, fanbase wars and posters trying to fit in with other posters really drives the culture, but once it's no longer part of the zeitgeist it will either completely fade away or persist mostly on its own merits.
