As a game it is pretty good, i like to see them the same as trails in the sky FC and SC. The first game is to set up things, introduce characters, the battle system and how the general trilogy will work, and then in rebirth things are set up in motion and drastically improves on the previous entry.
Just keep in mind that it is a linear, story-focused so it is not like mission or based or open word like other recent RPGs games.

Not sure about the best one but it does hit and do everything it sets up to do.
Hopefully they manage to add and rework everything they couldnt do in the remake, apparently there was a ton of cut content.
