You don't need to bother with specialists/innocents outside of a select few types to speed up post-game grinding, and you can just move those specialists around to other items. Higher tier items have higher level specialists too, so you can cut down on the grind by just waiting until you upgrade the shop or get to post-game stages with a thief.
Disgaea 5 lets you breed specialists in a farm so you don't even have to use the item world much to get high-level specialists in that game.
It's pretty much always less effort and time to just grind character levels until you're strong enough to progress, unless you hit character level + transmigration cap and want to go even further beyond.
