Sniper was hated even before TF2 was released. It was only tolerated before when the sniper rifle was a power item you could pick up in arena shooters because you never started with it.
Amby spies were never as annoying for normal players as (even post nerf) kunai deadringer spies are. They only nerfed the amby so much because sniper mains whined.
