I've known plenty. My sister as well is one.
They usually pretend to be boys. (My sister told me it's because otherwise they get harrassed and not taken seriously).
My guess is that they simply have tomboyish hobbies (like videogames) and just want to spend time with like-minded individuals.
Most of them are probably like this.
The ones that tell other anons they are female do it for attention.
I've played with an anon for 11 years before finding out she was actually a girl. Extremely good player.
I've played with an anon 2 weeks before she told me she was a girl, she was really bad and kept fishing for attentions from me and other anons.
Those were the two extremes, with a bunch of other girls in the middle.
