It's unironically much worse if she's clearly beating around the bush when she doesn't like something or prefers something else. Being patronized and coddled is orders of magnitude worse than being confronted with the cold hard truth.
It can also act as a filter, if a guy *can't* handle the truth without being butthurt/breaking into tears, then he is not worth keeping.
You learn very early on as a guy to take things like that on the chin and a woman withholding the truth from you like that implies that she thinks you're too weak to handle it.
