I recently got the game during the summer sale after avoiding it because of the bad press:
People are WAY too harsh on it. Maybe it was different at release, but in its current state it has better gameplay than DD1 but a worse, I dunno how to put it, metagame? I do prefer the whole persistent manor in DD1, having a stable of heroes and slowly upgrading over time vs the roguelike mode of DD2. However, DD2's gameplay is much better. DD1 is a great game but it actually got worse over time because they kept adding in new systems and radically changing things in a game that wasn't designed for it. Even back at release it was shaky, by the end it was downright patchwork.
DD2, in its current state (again I only got it recently) feels more coherent in the gameplay design of the heroes. They also are able to make the heroes more complex.
ANOTHER BIG CRITCISM THOUGH, ONE THEY DESERVE TO GET SHIT FOR, IS MAKING HEROES LIKE THE CRUSADER DLC. HE WAS THE FACE OF THE GAME. THEY KNEW EVERYONE WANTED HIM. MAKING HIM DLC IS GAY AS FUCK. Also not including fan favorites like the Houndmaster or Bounty Hunter and instead adding in some useless as Vagrant girl or w/e. Like come on.
