I swear level 40 characters have better gear and more health than boosted 58s. I remember kicking people from dungeons for being boosted was pretty common in early TBC when everyone just wanted to powerlevel in dungeons with other people in naxx gear, which was so fucking good I was wearing most of my naxx BIS for the first 4 or 5 weeks of raiding. If you took a boosted tank your run instantly doomed.

But even if you're "good at the game," questing in Hellfire solo with that gear is a terrible experience because you will do no damage and have no hp. The questing greens will definitely help you get started, but it is a slog.

Open world pvp is fun but It's only fun on your own terms. I wish instead of making servers PvP, they'd take inspiration from games like osrs and Albion and introduce a few max level, pvp only zones instead, with some daily quests and increased resource spawn rates. My fondest memories of SoD are definitely from P2 fishing and pvping in STV. It's a good level bracket for all sort of stuff. But it wasn't fun to engage in pvp before then, while questing, because it felt like more of a distraction rather than a part of it.

They're doing what I felt like they should've done from the start, mimicking the class balance of the each patch. The current "the last patch balance and that's final" paradigm has come to an end.
Perhaps we've finally hit the point in the game system where the developers feel that they're able to pull of these changes, maybe they really like Mists of Pandaria as they seem to have favorites, or perhaps Blizzard feels that the mists of pandaria has a chance to make it big so it warrants investment.
Also the militant, loud but influental "no chances" grognards are already in their containment zone in era or private servers.
I just think it probably wouldn't have been that much of a hassle to put some sort of aura buff such as -10% damage to mortal strike and come next patch set the aura to +-0% damage to mortal strike.

Also interesting is to note the completely different approach to balancing the game between the Aggrend, Ghostcrawler and Ion Hazzikostas.
Ghostcrawler played holy priest, and holy priest sucked as long as he was in charge. Same with Ion, he played restoration shaman and the rshaman was always the punching bag
until he retired from raiding and they got a massive overhaul in the dragonflight.
But Aggrend has no such qualms. He plays retribution paladin and he will buff his class and spec.

I'm playing classic vanilla for the first time, WoW too for that matter and it's alright. I've really enjoyed how it leads you into the world and gives your character a place in it rather than immediately shoving you into some world saving quest. I also like how I'm actually saving up and working for gear while I'm leveling, I like that more compared to getting handed everything for free like in SWTOR or nearly for free in FFXIV. Been playing Cataclysm/nu-wow lately and it is such a trash game.
The questing is the same time smothering easy and boring yet somehow being irritating and overwhelming.
PVP is like, you blow everything you have on someone and their HP bar does not even move and then they 1 shot you.
For real anyone who is not a hardcore wow nerd already are never gonna like these trash games.

Some classes have also received an early buff, despite being expected to scale well as the Mists of Pandaria Classic expansion progresses. Honestly if we're actually gonna categorize periods of WoW, it'd probably have to be done in eras. Like Vanilla-TBC-Wrath era, Cata-MoP-WoD era, and the modern era ushered in by Legion. But even Legion is a vastly different gameplay loop compared to DF/TWW, so maybe Dragonflight is the start of the 4th era of WoW? TWW is more or less a repeat of the DF gameplay loop.

But you could argue that vanilla is it's own era where leveling IS the main game and endgame was way more sandboxy, but that's just because of the mindset/culture of the playerbase in 2005, and the fact that my computer could barely load Orgrimmar or Ironforge, let alone enter a raid with more than 10 fps. I think we just categorize tbc and wrath with vanilla because Cata permanently removed swathes of vanilla content from the game, and leveling truly got trivialized around then.

I'd separate MoP from WoD for a big reason: It was the time that they squished down the original numbers of every class and item because it was getting out of hand at late MoP (Tanks were reaching 1 mil HP)
WoD also introduced the new player models, garrisons (Confining players by force to an isolated area) and jumpstarted the horrendous meta of overcomplicated raid fights (Archimonde being the biggest offender)

The R14 weapons are really fine, it's basically a free raid weapon which most people get eventually anyway, BRE mogs R14 with 1 proc, Sulfuras deals more damage, Ashkandi is pretty much the same thing, R14 dagger is like 6 extra damage vs the dagger from Rag.
But the R13 set and caster weapons are aids powercreep in MC or BWL patch, from pre-bis it basically doubles your HP and gives you raid BIS levels of damage. The mage set misses like 30 spell damage from Tier 3. It's why things like Shadow priest and soul link warlock are so aids in vanilla, they are already tanky, now you double their HP with gear from Naxx patch while everyone has shit damage?

They're getting ready for Classic+. They tested the waters with #somechanges in TBC then one or two balance changes during WoTLK, and most people were okay with it.
They then went a step further and developed SoD to see how players would react to massive sweeping changes in a completely new meta. They managed to capture a big audience and exposed them to nu-dev changes which again most people were okay with.
Now they're ripping off the bandaid and completely reworking the already established MoP meta.
