The way combat works is pretty unclear. Aline controlled ALL of the Chroma when Renoir entered, and he was still able to fracture the world and get locked into a stalemate. So, the skill of the painter definitely plays a part. Renoir controlled all of the chroma during the final boss fight, and Aline was still able to tip the scales in favor of the party. In the end, we don't entirely know how fighting with Chroma works. It's possible Clea couldn't have slapped Aline out but it's not unreasonable to assume she could've done more, especially given what she did to Simon and painted Clea.
