in a lot of MMOs, guild wars 2 included, the ratio of male to female characters is not far off the real world ratio of men to women, but the gender ratio of the players is always very skewed towards male. I haven't seen a whole lot of proper studies or research into this, aside from one paper observing that all-female character groups in MMOs tend to have statistically more frequent positive social interactions, and one survey of japanese VR Chat players that presented data as-is without much analysis. I have a feeling given the current political climate that we won't see any real research on this topic any time soon, but it is something I am very curious to know more about.
