If I was Ukrainian I would prefer NATO, but also prefer peace over continuing the war. NATO is as responsible as Russia is for creating the conflict in the first place.
Mobile and Shell were contracted to drill the oil fields in the Donbas, which would have been an economic blow to Russia which (as was made clear in the first winter of the conflict) supplies oil to EU. Then the separatists appeared and the contacts were cancelled because of the fighting.
So on one side you have Oil Companies (aka NATO) (aka U.S.A), and on the order side you have Oil Companies (aka Russia, the oil industry there is explicitly state owned vs. the state being implicitly oil industry owned like it is in the West).

Really the best answer is neither, but nobody is going to let Ukraine be anything more than a puppet state.
