Likely their first (or last) RPG they played with multiple races to play as, and a large world to explore. I loved it for the first 10-15 hours, then quickly started to get bored with all the copy pasted content and dull environments/quests. I wish the combat was better but for it's faults its fun to build your own little house go on quests with some cool setpieces and explore the world. Skyrim has some of the best music in gaming though I don't think it could ever be beat and I prefer Morrowind. Solid game to play when your sick. I was actually thinking of Dragons Dogma while I was typing that. DD could be a good competitor but the game is much more railroaded than Elder Scrolls. It's linear and replays are going to be largely the same, barring the class you chose to focus on. Almost certainly a restriction placed on them by the money Capcom is willing to sink into it. I was pretty pissed when I popped it in on release and saw that they completely dumbed down the leveling and skill system from Oblivion. As if Oblivions was complicated at all. Skyrim was a letdown, Oblivion and Morrowind are the more nostalgic games for me at least. That said, Skyrim is passable for a zoning out and just adventuring game. I love Skyrim. The hype for it when it came out was crazy. It felt a lot like Halo 3 releasing. If you knew TES, you were unbelievably excited for another, modern entry.
If you didn't, it was still incredibly hype because so many people talked it up to be awesome. And then it actually delivered, for the most part. /v/ can be contrarian all it wants but Skyrim was and is considered a GOAT.

Skyrim sucks because it's a shitty game. The combat is braindead and every one of its RPG mechanics are very simple and most of them are janky. The Elder Scrolls is genuinely boring. The early game is a slog. The late game may as well play itself. The games are wide as the ocean and deep as a fucking puddle. There's fuck all to explore or do besides hundreds of copy pasted dungeons. Morrowind doesn't have this problem because it does fun sprinkling of artifacts and interesting things to find, but it has its own problem where it's way too easy, even if you're not trying, to become stupidly overpowered. The entire game is so fucking broken, and even lategame enemies are such a non-threat. Magic using enemies have to stand perfectly still and wind up their projectile attacks, and have access to maybe a twentieth of the spell effects you do, and even the ones that can do things besides spam easy to dodge fireballs don't even do anything intelligent. You have an entire faction of wizards who don't believe in stairs and one enemy who can actually fly, and it's more annoying than actually dangerous. You can literally kill the universe-warping final boss in like five hits if you have maxed strength and a good sword. (And you will unless you literally beelined for Red Mountain from Seyda Neen)

Oblivion has even shitter balance and fuck all to find because EVERYTHING IS LEVEL-DEPENDENT, and Skyrim is elevator music all the way through. Fuck Bethesda. Their games are boring, lowest common denominator garbage. I have played through each 3d elder scrolls entry dozens of times and wholeheartedly wish I did something better with my life.

I played it again after 14 years and while I enjoyed the playthrough mostly, I ended up getting tired of it towards the 70th hour (of the 90 hours I played). I do think it's a good game and it does feel good to get stronger and explore, but there comes a point where you just want to go get it over with.

But that only applies to that time, 2011. If you didn’t play it back then, your opinion about the game is invalid.

Skyrims ability to send enemies in a frenzy, then resurrect their now-dead allies from the safety of a ledge was kino. Or casting fear and laying down runes.
mods actually bring a lot of unique and fun utility spells as well, like being able to go completely invisible and silent so you can slip into a room unnoticed and set up a trap, ambush, or just to familiarize yourself with the layout
