>isn't 8wt one of the highest line weight for freshwater rods?
Yeah, but I can also use it for salt water if I want to because it is an option where I live. I have a 5-6wt I learned on but I've found the 8wt is truly a utilitarian size and it lives in the back of my truck with a set of hip waders.
>biggest pike i ever got on my spot was 1.1 meter and i don't think these would go for flies, or am i mistaken?
Streamers are another kind of fly which are generally larger and meant to imitate bait fish, amphibians, small mammals, larger insects or crustaceans. Poppers are also fun.
>if i remember well there's some that sink and some that float right?
Correct.

>It's like bringing a marlin rod for bluegill.
More like a 12 gauge for dove. It works, is fun and you can't stop me.
