I misremembered it then. It's been way too many years since I've played HK.
That's even way worse than. No wonder it feels so dogshit.
The whole 2 damage deal makes exploration also less exciting since it now effectively takes 8 mask shards (instead of 4) to get an effective health upgrade.
I'm fine with certain attacks doing more damage (like special boss attacks), but using double damage as standard on pretty much everything breaks the game design in half. Like
> stagger a flying Savage Beastfly in the corner since the room is filled with swirly bois that didn't get killed from stomps thanks to TC's quality design
> it sinks down and instantly deletes 80% of your max health WHILE STAGGERED because 2x double contact damage and i-frames being luxury
