Why I left Genshin Impact: A rant from an early player. (1/?)

I’d like to preface this by stating that everything said in this post is my personal opinion, not some kind of attack on Genshin Impact or anyone who still plays and enjoys it. I also am not 100% sure my thoughts are structured coherently, I wrote this slowly over the course of 3 days. I fully expect that plenty of people here will disagree with some of my opinions here, and I’d never fault someone for simply liking something I dislike. If you love Genshin, I’m super happy for you and I hope you continue to enjoy it and have fun. I wish I could still enjoy it as much as I used to.

I’m not going to make any sweeping generalizations, and I make no claim on the game’s current quality. I can’t speak to any changes made after Version 5.3, because that’s around when I stopped playing (I don’t think I finished the AQ out at that time, so I just saw the surface of even that update). The last thing I remember is Capitano fighting Mauvika in the arena (and then I think I got just a bit past there in terms of the AQ).

Ok, with all that out of the way I can continue. If memory serves, I started playing Genshin on mobile within a week of its release (I think it was 48 hours after the game’s release, but it’s been nearly 5 years and I might be a bit off). Regardless, I was one of the early players and I was there through it all. All the changes and improvements made, new features added, etc.

And I absolutely loved it. It was unlike any mobile game I’d ever played before. The map is enormous, the world is colorful, the lore is intriguing. It was great! Sure, Paimon’s voice became painful after around 30 minutes of exposure, but it wasn’t enough to deter me from the game (and it became less grating as the game went on, it was far more shrill in the beginning).
