Now that I think about it
>CVX: Claire finds Chris, Wesker is revealed to be alive with enhanced strength, rivalry with Chris continues
>RE5: Chris/Wesker's story ends, basically the "end of Umbrella Saga"
RE3 establishes that the city was destroyed and Jill was infected (important to RE5). But thats it. RE4 doesn't really further the Umbrella stuff either. They're both replaceable in terms of overall story. RE1/2/CVX/5 are more important to the canon.
