This happens all the time, for example in cyberpunk 2077, cd projekt red weren't allowed to use Morgan Blackhand so they kinda fused part of his story and legend into Silverhand being delusional/relic messing with his head, and they DID work closely with the creator and owner of the cyberpunk tabletop
