It's just a trainer game. Basically you pick a horse, their "legacy" (other horses they inherit traits from), and support cards (6 cards that introduce events with different characters that give you skills and boost training).
You then train the horse based on their aptitude and then watch them race in career or pvp modes. The appeal is mostly in the career as that's where all the characterization, story, and results from your effort show.
I personally quite like it. I don't have any desire to spend money whatsoever and I don't think I will.
