I saw a turtle in the road while driving this evening when it was almost dark
he was dark, the asphalt was dark
I just barely realized what it was and managed to avoid him
turned around, stopped my car, and ran back to him
but two other drivers drove past before I could get to him
one of them must have clipped him, because part of the edge of his shell was cracked and a bit of blood dribbled out
he was still moving, though, with his head scrunched inside of his shell as far as it would go
I picked him up and moved him over to the grass beyond the edge of the road, pointed him toward the nearby creek
but I still feel really fucking sad
I wish I'd stopped sooner and prevented him from getting hit
I wish I could've done more for him
I hope he'll be okay
