yes, I did a alternative route on the Pennine Way and passed it near the end
Started in Galashiels -> part of St. Cuthbert's Way to where it connects to Dere Street then to the end where it connects to the Pennine Way -> Pennine Way to end in Edale
Lovely hiking, I appreciated your tips from before

It's very crowded from what I understand and I'm out of vacation days from work. Maybe next year, but I'll try and do it out of season, April or September

Apparently a town I passed nearby (Jedburgh) has an african cult hanging in the forest, I regret not detouring to try and find them, maybe you can try in my stead

>>150395784
Yeah, it's actually really challenging this stretch. Past the rwanda hotel or whatever it's called, it's extremely technical single trail. Up and down constantly, kills rythem dead, fucks the knees in different ways. I'm nursing various injures now. Succumb to extreme dehydration today too, I felt drunk but I drank water all day long. My pack is obscene, it's okay when I'm in the zone but when I'm flagging it weighs 2x as much.

You absolutely should do it if you have any experience before, it'll be a challenge but it's magnificent. A few points where you're cut off from society for 15 miles or more. It's great, I'd probably think it's best in spring or very late summer like now. Because humidity will consume you in the summer.
>>150395928
It's good now imo, not many out considering it's still August and it's Bank Holiday weekend. Very few on the trails the past 2 days. But the first day it was packed. It's a good bucket list hike imo, maybe if you had spare days after the cairngorms are waiting for you.

Im yet to get to the real mountains though so we'll see. Maybe it's full of people.
>"We were just moving up with Jonas, who had just had to pee, when a rider in front of us fell. We didn't even brake, and yet we still slid."

>"Unfortunately, I fell right on my shoulder, which dislocated. I wanted to keep going, but I didn't know how to fix it. I asked for help, and they put it back in place so I could get going again."

>"Then something funny happened," he recounted with some self-deprecation. "I went to get some gel from my back pocket, and I dislocated my shoulder again."

>"I had to get into an ambulance to have my shoulder re-dislocated. I entrusted my bike to a man who didn't speak English very well."

>"When I got out of the ambulance, the man I'd given my bike to had disappeared. There was no bike left. I had to wait 5 to 10 minutes for the support vehicle to give me a new bike."
>>150395942
what is your base weight? I'm running ~6kg and find any heavier than that makes life suffering - especially if you have to food carry for more than two days at a time. My knees also came out very worse for wear on the downhills after ~6 days hiking, I'm not used to the up and down for obvious reasons and it turns out cycling fitness doesn't translate that well to mountain walking. Carried on in any case with the help of ibuprofen.

I still managed ~30km per day average over 12 days which I'm quite happy with, but I got home on Friday and slept the entire weekend away. Am absolutely cooked.
>>150395748
I am glad you enjoyed it, if you're ever back in the UK for more hiking I have plenty of suggestions, and would strongly recommend staying overnight in a mountain bothy at least once either in Scotland or Wales
>>150396037
>30km per day average over 12 days
jesus that's fuckin whopper. no wonder your knees are gone. if I did one 30k hike I'd never shut up boasting about it
>>150396018

>>150396100
stayed in spithope bothy and gregs hut in the pennines was absolutely lovely. I sent £20 to the mountain bothy association after I got home as they were so pleasant

>>150396156
I came to meet friends who are doing the End to End, they were in the best hiking shape of their lives and I was doing everything in my power to keep up
>>150396037
That’s quite good I don’t know how much you need to climb for the highland trail but 25km days in mountains absolutely wreck me you have those crazy geezers who do two etappes a day and finish before two in the afternoon.
>>150396037
As in weight minus food and water? How the fuck do you get 6kg? Minus 2.5kg water, 1.5kg food it was about 18kg. That's when I left, pretty outrageous and I regret it dearly. Brought cool stuff like midge defense systems and various pots and pans.
Starting to get dreadlocks from not washing my hair in 3 days
WHW elevation map, it's absolutely brutal and I haven't hit the big mountains. That is going to be soul destroying.
>>150396254
I went through and calculated, and it averaged 29.9km distance / 782 meters climbing per day. I don't know if that's a lot of elevation or not.

>>150396338
Yeah, minus food and water. Didn't have to carry a huge amount of water since there is so much water sources in the UK. Would just filter 500ml or so at a time and carry with. (NB: This usually works, but in this specific hike was a mistake though, since there was a heatwave on in the first week I was there, was very thirsty many days. Even the boggy sections were bone dry)
My lighterpack for gear: https://lighterpack.com/r/4u3np4
excluding worn weight (and food and water) is 5.6kg

>>150396436
this happened to me, it took a lot of brushing and hair conditioner to finally loosen it up again when I got home. just embrace it, though if it's long enough, you should braid it (tightly) at the start of the hike and that keeps it relative tangle free during the walking

i wouldn't say it's a lot, but it depends on how the route looks, you can have 4km with 10% and then 25km of barely any climb or 30km with 1%, the first one is harder overall

Vingegaard's stage win (+8 points) and GC leadership (+3 points) propelled him from 73rd to 69th. Vuelta final GC victory is worth 70 points.
Vingegaard thus will overtake quite a few runners, if he does not crash.

Using wifi. Roaming inside the EU is basically free. For example in Nordics I have the same unlimited data I have at home. So there's no point even using wifi. Outside the EU it gets more expensive. When I was in the US earlier this year it was 20 yurodollars for 1.5 gigs of data for two weeks.
>>150399181
Yeah fuck roaming in the US. Whenever I travel there I use my work phone as a hotspot like some cheap third worlder out of principle

also would I look like a right cunt if I pulled out something like the colnago time trial bike considering I can generate wattage similar to eddy merckx of today
>>150397904
Tends to happen when you win a Grand Tour
The Vuelta is in full swing with a day of GC action, and that means another SPECTACULAR edition of /WORLD TOUR WINE/ !! Tonight's edition is an EMERGENCY BROADCAST after my first choice (Produttori del Barbaresco 2018) turned out to be CORKED.

Today's stage meandered through one of the GREAT wine regions of the world - Piemonte, Italia. There are a number of wonderful, beautiful appellations here, including one we've already visited (Barolo). Today's wine comes from the other great Nebbiolo appellation -- Barbaresco. It is grown adjacent to today's start in Alba, just east.

Paitin Barbaresco Serraboella 2021 ($50)

Nebbiolo is one of my favorite grapes, with a perfumed nose and light body anchored by face-melting tannins and profound depth of flavor. Barbaresco tends to be a bit less tannic than Barolo (although a lot of modern Barolo is reasonably accessible in its youth, and there's a few that I drink at like 2-3 years of bottle age that drink great).

Tasted at 4 hours of decanting. Pours a super-pretty pale ruby. Nose is dominated by floral notes, just a whiff of tar and fruit (cranberry), cedar spice, but not deeply perfumed. Palate has steel, but just feels super tight. Tannins drying on the finish and the acidity feels a bit restrained.

Bottle just feels super tight despite a long decant, not much opening of the fruit. Maybe even lightly corked? I didn't want to believe it after a bad bottle earlier today, but my impression seems very discordant from other tasting notes. I do have a very sensitive nose for TCA so the more I sit with this, the more I believe that this is just a bit corked.

So I can think of maybe 5 wines in the last year I have drank that have been corked and 2 were Italian and 2 were Spanish. I drink probably 80% French, 10% German, 5% American, and 5% otherwise, so I just need to ask what the fuck the Meds are doing with their corks and cleaning.

>>150403284
the biggest problem is always food imo unless you go cabin hopping which is way too expensive
>>150400118
>>150400081
It's faster (marginally) and it increases your chances with bike thots. Never buy a TT bike unless you want to race these things are horrible to ride on
>>150400081
riding is fun. it is more fun with a nicer bike. doesn't have to be aero. I'd get a Teammachine (which I have) or a Supersix (I also have) or a Tarmac (do not own).
>>150400081
I got a fancy canyon gravel bike, but I miss my old dinky specialized I bought used. Didn’t have to worry about roughing that frame up, also I HATE disc brakes.
>>150396018
did they find the bike?
Are European countries just okay with public urination? Do race organisers buy some kind of public urination pass from the government. I once knew a German girl who was totally okay with shitting in the bushes
>>150400081
i think for many people the aero frame is a bit of a meme, because it requires you to hit certain speeds and it requires you to be in an aggressive position and who cares about average speed anyway, once you get a powermeter you stop looking at speed.
for me the main reason to get an upgrade was to get hydraulic discbrakes, they make a huge difference especially when descending mountains in rain. they might also permit you wider tires if you like.

i think my carbon fibre hydraulic discbrake ultegra mech bike i'd happily ride for the rest of my life. if i ever buy a new bike or i lose or break this one, i'd probably get a wireless shifting setup. it is a bit of a luxury but it does provide for better shifting and you no longer have to replace shifting cables or adjust tension, so that is kind of a nice maintenance luxury
>>150403444
I bet the UCI is behind this, trying to teach them a lesson and hired the local crime syndicate. with the UCI trackers the bikes would have been found by now.

Man this makes me wonder, when the stages are like laps in a city or loops in the suburbs like Wollongong was, are they just pissing on people's front lawns? No one has answers to these questions.
>>150403714
when it's cold and raining, some of the riders just piss themselves
>>150403623
>they make a huge difference especially when descending mountains in rain
thats the biggest argument anyone ever brings up in favor of d*sc brakes, yet nobdy ever descends mountains in rain. be honest bert, you don't do silly things like that now do you
>>150403714

>>150403746

>>150403746
well i live in belgium where we don't have mountains, so i get about 3-4 weeks max to ride in the mountans where weather is notoriously unpredictable, so when i'm in the Alps I go ride every day unless I'm cooked no matter the weather

if i lived near the mountains i'd only ride on sunny days, but i don't so i have to maximize my time there.

(also sometimes it's like a cloudy 17C day and then you can leave in the sun and you go over the top of a mountain and suddenly you're in a different climate altogether)

>We are checking them out, and we have to prepare some new bikes for some of the riders, and that requires a lot of work. It was also good that Lidl-Trek and Movistar, who were in the same hotel as us, helped us a bit. It's good to see that the teams help each other.
>The mechanics are doing a good job this morning, and the bikes can come any time, says Plugge, adding that Jonas Vingegaard has not had a bike stolen.
look at this mad lad. I thought 30k per day was insane
>>150403690
That's rough for the TTT. They were arguably a top 3 favourite for that with 8 men. They should still do well enough, but a win might escape them.

I guess it's between Lidl and Ineos now (with your typical Jayco and EF pas normal TTT performances close by).
>>150404552

>>150404546
some of these mfs are insane. Most I’ve ever done at one time was 60km (walked from Greystones to Malahide) in 18 hours
>>150403284
Mind boggling how light that is. I'd imagine it's night and day. Lugging this around is severely restricting my ability to get miles in every day. I feel like infantryman who's been given all the ammo. My clothes are heavy, and I have pairs for almost daily changes. I guess there's weight there.
>>150404563
I've watched enough UAE TTTs to know that they almost always massively underperform. They clearly don't train much for it.

However, having tractors like Oliveira and Bjerg here makes me hopeful that they'll at least not shit themselves and lose 40+ seconds.
>>150404593

>>150404627
I have learnt. I have jeans, trainers, multiple pants and socks. A lot of it's damp now too so that's an extra kilo or so. Tent weighs 900g,sleeping bag is 700g. The bag I'd 2.3kg or so, it is 75l though so not too bad. I'll do this trip again in a few weeks I think. I'm going to lean from this, and I'm not even half way through. Today's essentially a rest and I'll clean things, I've eaten a huge lunch and I'll have a proper wash tonight. I just die after 4-5hr, lighter pack I think I'd do a good 7-8hr walking.

>It’s almost creepy how still Jonas sits, waiting and staring.

>This time at the counter, Mads gets a croissant.

>He sets down the pastry at his own side of the table and a cup of tea in front of Jonas. "You're fraternizing with the enemy," he says, only partly joking. "You'll be eating kajkager with Tadej fucking Pogačar."

>Jonas’ eyes flicker up to meet Mads’ briefly as he lifts the cup, drinks, and keeps his shoulders tense, drawing into himself.

>"I'm nervous as hell," he confesses.

>Mads takes his seat once more, glancing back at the screen. "It's the 17:10 from NCE, isn't it?”

>Jonas nods. "We are going to do… touristy stuff on the weekend."

>“People are entitled to their opinions. I’m equally entitled not to care” – Jonas Vingegaard has no time for criticism of World Championship absence

>“I won’t be going to the World Championships,” Vingegaard said bluntly. “It doesn’t fit into my schedule. I’m focusing instead on the European Championships.”

>Vingegaard, characteristically unbothered, responded to the backlash with a mix of defiance and detachment in a fresh interview during the early stages of the Vuelta. “People are entitled to their opinions,” the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader told Feltet.dk. “And I’m equally entitled not to care. I have my reasons for the decision, and people should be able to understand that.”

>Asked directly if he could understand the disappointment, Vingegaard was candid: “Yes, I suppose I can. But it’s my decision, and people have to respect that.”

>Jonas Vingegaard leads both the classification and the points competition, but it is very possible that the Dane will not do so after the 4th stage, considering Wednesday's team time trial.
>There are some on the team who hope that I will lose both the green jersey and the red jersey by tomorrow, says Vingegaard with a smile.
>Why?
>They think that our own time trial jersey is a little faster than the one we get from Santini, even though it is not a bad jersey.
>So it is not that I am riding to consciously keep it, says Jonas Vingegaard, who himself is aware that David Gaudu may want to take over the jersey today, when the stage ends on French soil.
Jonas will gift the jersey (maybe) to GODU today
>>150418304
that would be a weird question, the WC in Rwanda is on 28/09 and the EC in France is on 05/10 -- so it's really not that difficult to do both, it's really the question of going to Rwanda that is a problem for many riders

>Filippo Baroncini successfully underwent 11 hours of work to fix what had been described as “multiple facial injuries, a fractured vertebra, and facial and clavicular fractures.”
>“We can say that the worst is over, but we need to be patient,” team CEO Mauro Gianetti told TuttoBici. “Filippo needs to take all the time he needs to heal.
>“What happened to him wasn’t just a simple fall. His face was disfigured. What the surgeons did in more than 11 hours of surgery was incredible,” Gianetti said Monday.
>Baroncini was one of many who went down in a devastating crash on stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne earlier this month.
>Baroncini was later placed in an artificial coma to immobilize fractures in his face and back and flown to hospital.
>Gianetti said his rider underwent two separate operations last week at a hospital in Milan and is doing well.
>Andrea Agostini, chief operating officer at UAE Emirates XRG, revealed Ineos Grenadiers played a key part in helping Baroncini in the brutal aftermath of the crash.
Ineos veteran Michal Kwiatkowski was unhurt when he fell, but called his team medic to help his stricken rival.
>However, Agnostini also called out the organization behind the top-rated Poland tour.
>Baroncini suffered a long agonizing wait before he was evacuated from the race-course.
>“This raises a few questions. There’s a lot of talk about safety, and the teams and riders are always at the center of the discussion … But are the organizers exempt from everything?”
>“Filippo was conscious on the ground for more than 40 minutes before he was taken to hospital. Mauro [Gianetti] took charge of the situation, but it’s not clear why he was loaded into an ambulance and then not taken to the nearest hospital. They waited for another one to arrive,” Agnostini said.
>“Filippo’s face was disfigured. With such a blow to the head, he couldn’t have waited all that time.”

In the winter I used public transportation and it took me about the same time but at least I could read and such. Yes I have a car but I only use it to carry my bike out of the city for ciclismo.
