Finish up my dwarf army. I have over 2k units built and primed but I'm a stickler when it comes to using unpainted models. Gonna play some more games since I'm back from vacation but I will want to finish the army fully before the end of this year.

Also I just started painting a unit of longbeards (6th edition ones that I got 3D printed). Need some motivation painting 20 of these old fuckers. I airbrushed all of the silver but damn I've still got a lot to go through.

The "under produce to drive up prices" theory is the dumbest shit in the world and I'm sick of seeing it repeated. Assuming that they're intentionally under using their production capacity is retarded since it implies either

A. They, for some reason, increased the production capacity without actually intending to utilize it which makes no sense.

B. They're using the production capacity to over produce kits that aren't in demand and thus aren't selling instead of kits that are in demand and do sell.

Many people think that the lists published in Town Cryer Magazine are not canon.

The argument is as follows:
the magazine is not a magazine where Games Workshop writes things, they just approve and publish things created by fans, and therefore none of it is canon.

Make of that reasoning what you will. I think the logic doesn't hold up, it has the Citadel stamp of approval.

That can be contested desu.

It's the same logic as BL books and even old Forgeworld books back in the day, GW themselves didn't make them, but it's a canon source which does lead to issues when GW contradicts stuff like the Lords of the Lance book

Fuck's sake.

1. WD background is definitely canon. Half the background for the game first appeared in White Dwarf.
2. WD rules are not 'core' and are subject to player approval. Most of the articles explicitly say this.
3. Fan armies and miniatures published in WD are not canon.
4. Battle reports are usually not canon, but some exceptions exist. There are some characters and events that first appeared in battle reports that went on to become incorporated in army books (c.f. Helmut Feuerbach).
4. CITADEL JOURNAL is the fan material publication. Rules are considered less 'core' than WD. Background is not canon.

Forgot my main point.
6. Town Cryer was a mix. Early material was published in WD. This stuff was WD-equivalent. Later stuff was published fan material, basically citadel journal-tier. It's worth distinguishing.

While we're at it:
7a. WFRP 1e and the earlier books including TEW and the Realms of Chaos books were published by the GW studio
7b. Mid-WFRP 1e books were published by Flame publications, an in-house subsidiary like BL
7c. Late WFRP 1e books were published by Hogshead, a third party with the license.
8. WFRP 2e was published by Black Industries, an in-house subsidiary.
9. The last 1 or 2 WFRP 2e books and WFRP 3e were published by Fantasy Flight Games, a third party licensee.
10. WFRP 4e was published by Cubicle 7,, a third party licensee.

Take that how you will, but GW is very thorough in vetting anything through third parties. Honestly, they're probably more thorough than they are with in-house material. WFRP books of all editions are usually much better researched than BL material is (with one or two exceptions).

Doomstones is wonky in places too, probably because it was a converted D&D adventure.

But I'm also covering my ass, because you can always find something retarded if you look hard enough.

>>96263730
There's no written law (Maybe an IP lawyer might say otherwise).
But in practise, subsequent authors will try to stick to army books more than BL books and will completely disregard anything from Citadel Journal.
Sometimes it all comes out in the wash of history - some studio author may completely overwrite some old piece of background, but it will be well-liked enough for later writers to bring it back. In the end you have a web of material referencing itself - material that has been referenced repeatedly is pretty hard canon. Material never mentioned is peripheral.

I mean if we start referencing one of the most peripheral and obscure elements of a publication, and it becomes popular online, maybe as a meme, the likelihood that new authors reference it increases.
And at that point it wouldn't necessarily be a "reintroduction" or "the moment it becomes canon", it would in fact be a callback to old obscure canon.

I don't believe that unknown and obscure tidbits of lore are outside of canon until they are acknowledged widely.
In fact I think it's the opposite: unless they are retconned or amended directly, they remain floating in a dark corner of canon (inside of it).

The thing I posted as a picture is canon, the mechanoids of El Drongo are canon.

-

This is in fact important, because Games Workshop published on the Old World website a map of Estalia, believing it to be such an old obscure tidbit of canon lore.
Instead, it was outside of their ownership, a fan creation. They had to hastily remove it to avoid lawsuits.

If that map was in the Citadel Journal, or in a late Town Cryer, they could have kept it instead.
Now there's the distinction between "official canon" and "non-canon", a real legal distinction.

Yeah, there's IP law and the precedent and tradition of canon and they're not the same. Sometimes the latter even wins over the former - Arianka has been referenced repeatedly (i.e. 'is canon') despite GW not owning the rights.

It might be worth comparing with the original biblical canon, which is just the body of work a community accepts as legit.

Following his battle against Cathay, Korgoth encountered a roaming babd of Dwarfs, lead by a Thane on a shield.

Playing with 3 strategic points, the Khorne army lined up to prepare for a co-ordinated advance and gain some victory points.

The Dwarfs were having none of it though, tearing apart 3 chaos ogres, 10 marauders and 5 hounds in short order, annihilating the Chaos right flank.

It was all or nothing. Korgoth lead an all or nothing charge with both Chosen Knights and Hounds into a Hammerers unit. Calling a challenge, it was met by the Thane.

After 3 gruelling combat phases and some really lucky rolls for Chaos and unlucky for Dwarfs, the unit broke and was run down, Korgoth having received 2 wounds by the Thane and taking his head upon the pursuit.

The Dwarfs then attempted to attack the Chaos Warriors, repelled a gyrocopter, rangers and ran down the warriors after a failed panic test.

Well for me it's simple.
Its pretty evident that everything that GW directly & indirectly released, whether through core books, expansions, WD issues, and even publications via Fanatic magazine, is canon; everything else made by fans, or further tinkering made by the Mordheim devs (if done outside GW), is not.

So simple that we have to add a new category to the discourse named "Deuterocanon" where the purely fan made "Forest Goblins" sit alongside "Arabian Tomb Raiders" who were published on Games Workshop's "Town Cryer Magazine".

It seems to me that you people are doing all sort of mental gymnastics to exclude Town Cryer from canon.

It really is simple. I used the term "Deuterocanon" (or secondary canon) since it works really well in the biblical context.
Whilst not found in the Rulebook , the 2002 Annual, nor in Empire in Flames, they are still of great importance and canonicity.
>purely fan made "Forest Goblins"
Mea culpa. At a first glace, I thought it came from the Nemesis Crown material; when it (and other factions as I know realise) was in fact NC fan material. I'll have to be careful the next time I use Broheim for an easy research.

From my experience as a zoomer I can say that in Mordheim and WHF young blood is scarce, but not absent. Me and a friend of mine recently joined a Mordheim group after years of looking for one, for example.
In my experience (for reference: we started playing when we were in high school) the main issue is not getting people to play the game, but to make them keep doing so: it's all fine for a handful of games, but the moment you start asking for investment problems start to arise, and rightly so. This is how it went every time we tried to get a new player:
"These games were really fun!"
"Right? Isn't the campaign aspect awesome? You can keep playing with our models as much as you want, but since we don't have things suitable for everything that's on the warband list you could have to buy a few."
"Ok, where do I find them?"
"If I'm not wrong GW still has- no, they're discontinued. Maybe the store in the city center has proxies... They do! But it's not in stock, and since this manufacturer sells very little you're gonna have to ask them to order it, and it could take months for it to arrive. Otherwise you can buy this proxy online from this Spanish company with a sketchy-ass website... Oh, it costs MORE than what GW charged for the original model..."
I might add that when you're 16 the notion of buying things on online stores is usually reserved for exceptional stuff, and when you factor in the fact that you don't have a lot of disposable income and that every purchase you make on webstores has to be approved by your parents, and if 90% of the store plays one game that has no crossover with what the 2 weirdoes are proposing and that requires already a massive investment, especially for a teenager, it's no wonder that younglings usually don't play Specialist Games. And don't even get me started on how hard it was to get people into TRYING Epic.

With TOW things have started to change, but not by much.
If it came out when we were still teens it would have been awesome, but for better or for worse we were cursed to grow up in the Dark Age of Warhammer Fantasy.
A new Mordheim could make things easier, since changing rulesets is far simpler than finding models for the Carnival of Chaos, but I worry that it could have the Necromunda effect, and making it impossibile of playing anything but the newer (and likely far worse) version.

Fair enough, I think you're right about everything. For what it's worth I started Mordheim in a similar position to you, as a teenager in nogames upstate NY. For models it was mostly Lego men and handmade paper cutouts and shit, later was able to get Reaper miniatures for my favorite characters, but I generally found that I had to provide my friends with the models if I wanted to get them playing. And the campaign aspect is 100% a hard sell when people start bitching about the paperwork, you're right, although the right subset of players seem to power through it.
I'd hope that a current-day Mordheim kid would buy single minis for each model they want from a non-GW source, just so they don't blow cash on GW prices. I know that these purchases are still a big deal for a kid without income but I'd hope that those cheapo Wizkids minis or something would provide an avenue... And that online shopping would make it more accessible for the new generation as well. That's another thing I like about the existing Mordheim community is that every event I go to, nearly every single warband is exclusively proxies and conversions. (And the online Instagram scene, which is the visible part, expresses this) It's a shame when GW's "entry level" offerings via specialist games are still Kill Team tier, which is to say massively expensive. Mordheim is, in my optimistic view, a living community where you get the rules for free and everyone actively encourages you to use the cheaper offbrand models or otherwise kitbash it up. The lack of corporate mischief has a nice DIY feel and helps filter out the nonsense.

>Knick da baby, smash da 'ead!
>Ain't no fun when dey iz dead!
>Make da humies lose they wits!
>We iz gobbos, sneaky gits!

I'll need at least three more stanzas, but I've got that as the last stanza since the "original" song ends with "We are Goblins, you are food!"

I've been listening to Lorebeards where he discusses lore with another guy (Sotek, don't know his expertise in the industry) and so far his "faggotry" is pretty mundane. So at least as of 2512 lots of smaller states exist, albeit within the structure of a larger Grand Province.

Reikspiel is supposed to get you by. The one exception is Wastelander which is the language of the Wasteland (Dutch, I guess). Not Marienburg, incidentally, which speaks Reikspiel for trade reasons.

I figure you go to any major town in the Empire and everyone speaks Reikspiel with funny accents but as soon as you go off a side road in Stirland everyone starts speaking some nonsense local dialect and arranging their calendar by lunar months with a festival every 16 days that involved dressing up as a fish and challenging outsiders to an improvised poetry battle.

Unfortunately there isn't much because at the time the book is set, Ostermark is a vassal of Talabecland, so it only gets a paragraph.
Some of the Freistadts mentioned are in Ostermark, like Eisental or Essen. Although presumably Ostermark should be almost entirely Freistadts, as it is a league of free towns.
Ostermarkers in official material tend to have the same kind of name as all other Imperials. But then in reality many Hungarians used germanised names, so maybe Wolfram Hertwig is actually Hartvig Volfram or something.

I’m not a lore junkie, so I don’t really get it. How does Skaven society exist if they are constantly fighting each other and backstabbing other yet they also have a council and clans that coordinate and cooperate… but don’t because they keep killing each other?
How do they still exist and not just wipe each other out especially with other races wanting to wipe them out?

The big clans are too big to wipe each other out so there's an equilibrium with fighting at the margins or through proxies.

Skaven are poorly thought out part of the setting. Like "as many elves as the plot requires" cranked up to 11. The less you think about it the better..

It's not like they're literally at war 24/7 and constantly murdering each other so that a council member can't even finish a sentence without getting bumped off.

there are LOTS of rats, so it doesn't matter how many die, there are always more than enough for their society to keep functioning, and infighting is also one way to keep their society functioning, since when that happens meat will be back on the menu

the people that want to wipe them out don't really act on it because they don't have the means or even the know how to realise such a plan

the clans and individual rats in charge are impossibly rich/powerful/influential/resourceful, having multiple layers of fall guys/fall clans, and ways to counter assassinations is their bread and butter, the rest of the rats will successfully kill each other, but they won the rat race, they get to have the prize

also the cooperation of the council is kinda imposed and regulated by agents of their literal god, so there's a measure of outside intervention in keeping things afloat

you should also separate the archetype stereotype from the implied practical reality, a clanrat won't go stab his neighborhood baker at the drop of a breadstick, he might want to do so, he might think about doing it, like many real people think unreasonably inhumane things at the minor inconvenience, but won't really act on it in most cases
the same applies to many other strata of skaven society, with every skaven having his own "starscream" and being in turn a "starscream" for someone else, but it will take quite a few sunday mornings episodes of treacherous musings before they actually end up trying something, if they ever do, because skaven at the end of the day are as megalomaniac as they are cowardly.

I imagine half of the few failed assassinations that are actually attempted end up with Starsqueak snivelling and grovelling about misunderstandings, with Rattatron telling him it's his fourth last chance and leaving it at that because he's too busy planning the demise of his own boss, and he still needs meatshields like Starsqueak to accomplish it... for now.

All this Empire discussion(and the 6th Ed halberdiers I just ordered off ebay) have inspired me, what books(WFRP or WFG) have the best/highest quantity of Empire fluff? Preferably stuff with a focus on more minor/unexplored areas.

>constantly fighting each other
kind of a meme, they spend more time plotting then actually doing anything. In the old world timeline they're at the tail end of a massive civil war, but once that ends they pretty much form a fairly stable empire. The winners at the end of this on going war will stay in power all the way to the End Times, with the exact same leaders I think, so they're honestly pretty stable. I'm sure there's small wars between all the warlord clans. but the 4 great clans and the ones on the council have that shit locked down, despite all the scheming.

I was surprised how reasonable he was about the Fimir. He said he actually liked the background for them.

The only place I actually disagree with him is that he thinks writers have a responsibility to prevent retarded children from putting other people in uncomfortable positions.

Personally, if a twelve-year-old is describing how his friend's character gets raped by Fimir, the Fimir are not the problem. There are some basic social rules that kid should have been taught and wasn't.

>I read that in the 'this is what Bilbo Baggins Hate' song.
Got the whole thing finished, I'll probably revise it later but this is probably the final draft since session's tomorrow.

>Gobbos shoot n' gobbos stab!
>Gobbos hoot n' gobbos nab!
>Gobbos sneaky shade o' green!
>Watch these Gobbos gettin' mean!

>Knick da baby, smash da 'ead!
>Ain't no fun when they iz dead!
>String 'em up and take dey bits!
>We iz the gobbos, sneaky gits!

>Feast n' burp n' eat 'em all!
>Crack dere marrow with a maul!
>Watch us hunt n' skin n' neck ya!
>WE IZ GOBBOS, WE'Z GUNNA GETCHA!
Song is immediately followed by the goblins running into what was an otherwise very pleasant festival held in Averland, stabbing and gutting anyone they can get their murderous little mitts on.
