this is a good video. some points that were brought up:

commander, being a fundamentally different game (40 life, four players, very high power due to all the legal cards) means something designed for commander has to be turned up to 11. When you do your turn, you have to wait a long time (3 other turns) before you get to do your next turn, so each of your turns has to feel huge and impactful, so commanders need to have this novel full of card text and abilities or they're just not going to be interesting or bought.

if designed-for-commander cards aren't put in standard sets, no one will buy the standard sets. If they are put in, the sets will sell way more.

There's no reason for WotC to stop doing this pattern, therefore it will not stop. Line go up.

Pokemon has made the perfect model, in that 95% of their cards are intentionally shit and just pack filler, and a couple are designed to see tournament play, and so they know in advance what cards are going to be good and design around those handful of cards. The pack filler still gets demand from collectors, because people like pokemon.

Magic can't do that though. If Pokemon makes a shitty beedrill card or something, people will go "fuck yeah I love beedrill" and still want it. But Magic can't make a shitty, I dunno, owl or something, and have people want it or care. Who gives a fuck about some random owl? Even if you give it a name or whatever, no one cares. No brand recognition in the random fodder cards.

ramping up the UB might be an attempt to fix this, by giving pack fodder actual value due to brand recognition

There was quite a bit of broken shit in that standard. However Academy is banned and the power creep there is tiny compared to everything else before Mirrodin. Some of the strongest decks, like RDW and Stiflenought don't run anything from the block that would be considered overpowered. i.e.

There's a lot of inside jokes that are more or less just ripped whole-sale from the internet community that surrounded the show almost 20 years.

The show itself is not heavily self-referental beyond the cabbage salesman which was more poking fun at the fact they kept destroying carts of goods in chase sequences every episode and this guy, coincidentally, was always the guy getting his shit rocked. The viewers picked up on this bit and hammered the joke so hard that it became unfunny by the third time the cabbage salesman appeared. Same thing with the cactus juice.

It's weird because it IS reddit/tumblr humor that is incredibly dated BUT the cards are more a reference to these jokes than the actual show itself. Change the timeline, towns and settlements are not developed. We join the story of people arriving at the plan and venturing out and starting to settle new towns. They find old tracks (like train tracks) that they can't figure out how to use but it leads people to wander "east" to see where it leads.

Third is settlements starting to establish themselves, theres a fight as over the gun, and we leave the plane as they plan out how to use the train tracks (this now leaves a possible return to the plane with the anticipation of a complete rail).

You're ignoring the reality that +1/+1 counter counter spam on every other creature is power creep and was something in the past limited to specific cards and extremely rare. Bristly Bill is a major part of this problem.

Landfall being printed again and again in every expansion is also boring. It was fine the first time in 2010. It was okay the second time in 2019. It's absolutely out of line and should never be done again after that. Same thing with bringing back all these other mechanics over and over again. If anything, having landfall, flashback, etc. being a criteria for being banned would be great.

You're also ignoring the reality that one of the major problems with current standard is that it has at least 5 too many expansions and hence why lots of cards need to be banned in order to bring the card count down a lot. 12-16 expansions in standard is too much. The appeal of standard was that you only had to deal with 5-8 expansions (2-3 of which being core sets so lots of reprints) so you didn't have to deal with all the combo that popped up and stayed in all the other formats. These days with 201 cards per expansion leads to about 1000-1600 too many cards in standard and in spite of that, it is the least diverse standard ever. So realistically the format needs at least 1000 card bans. Best place to start is with the obvious power creep, triggered ability, and counter/token spam on everything.

The extra year of sets is not an argument against the fact the FIRE design philosophy which JotC is following now and printing cards for commander (a 40 life total format) even in the standard sets is the problems. The extra cards does not lead to the problem of an excess overpowered slop as much as it allows people to make decks that make the consequences of printing overpowered FIRE slop even worse since there are more cards in the format with which to further break the intentionally broken cards.

I'm just saying this is what standard is now: spamming broken cards with abilities that would've been considered insane 8+ years ago, whether those cards be rares, uncommons, or even commons in some cases. Design mistakes are basically design inspiration now (e.g., look at how many affinity cards have been released in the past four sets, we even have an artifact land that colorfixes). If you compare something like Bristly Bill to cards printed in OG Tarkir block, the only thing that could hold a candle to it would be Siege Rhino, but nowadays, it's just a decent card that synergizes with +1/+1 counters. Whether you have to kill it or counter it immediately is the bar nowadays for how broken something is, and Bristly Bill can't clear that bar without 7 mana and a sturdy board.

It sounds like you have more issues with standard in general than what I've said, and I'm not gonna tell you that standard is ideal or even good, I'm just saying banning a majority of the things on that like isn't gonna make it any better.

What color was Bill again? And what does that color do again? Oh yeah. Ramp out lands. And it's not even just his activated ability, but the triggered ability and the excess of tapped-fetch lands in all the landfall sets. And then now the landfall deck gets that gamebreaking chocobo which allows Bill to be even more effective in that deck. The only thing holding that deck back now is the existence of the other game breaking slop printed.

Standard is just a format with some rules to limit the size of the card pool. The problem with the format itself is that it's not standard anymore but nu-extended. Extended being a format that was dropped in 2011 because Legacy fags didn't play it because they could go through 60+ expansions to pull out all their turn 1-3 combos and everyone else didn't play it because it often the extra block of cards often introduced another layer of deck building that results in cards which were powerful but fine, getting more support which lead to them being much more powerful than before. It was too broken for standard players so they didn't play it and it wasn't broken enough for legacy players so they didn't really play it. Unfortunately this is what most of your post is focusing on.

The biggest problem however is the CARD DESIGN. Something you have to do some retarded relativist non-argument to get around. They are designed to be gamebreaking purposely. And it's all printed to get Commander paypigs to shell out more shekels and to force new cards into modern and legacy even from standard sets so that those players will paypig harder. To a much lesser degree pauper players will paypig decks though fortunately for pauper the most expensive cards in the format are no more than $5 though the power creep slop has infected it too. However, those big eternal formats should always be expected to be broken. Whereas standard at least in the past was expected to be at least somewhat balanced after Mirrodin cycled out and before 2016 when standard started to get a whole lot more bans because there were a lot more gamebreaking cards and combos popping up. And now for the past five years it's been just the same blatantly power crept slop that serves no purpose but to get other formats to play with their due to the relative power alone.

I am really happy with the state of the game. WotC cultivating a situation in literally every format, where nothing that happens previously in a game matters, and every game is just a series of coinflips where the first player to win a flip wins the game.
It's very high quality game design. Good game design is where decisions don't matter, and instant wins occur at absolute random ex nihilo. Player choices not mattering, and games being being determined arbitrarily by chance 100% of the time, is a sign of competent game designer.
