Not including a death star of my own meant I put line on side objectives and when I needed to spoke the football mid game I tied up termis in CC and just as stood menacingly next to them to score the middle. The absolute minimum for despoilers in a WE list is 40, whether thats 2 units of 20, 4 units of 10 or 1 unit of 20 and 2 units of 10 is up to you. Ideally you'd want more but this is the minimum.
You're allowed shooting in a WE list contrary to popular belief, you should just avoid heavy weapons whenever possible because the WE want to be constantly advancing into the enemy and Heavy weapons want to stay still.
You should bring TSS squads instead of tacticals tho, they are more on theme. Volkite Chargers are particularly fun in WE because they're assault weapons so you can double tap with volkite and then still smack in melee like your TSS is a weaker legions despoilers.

Better option: interdiction cadre them. Also run WE hereticus so they get unbreakable. Someone steps out of their deployment zone? 20 despoilers. They move another unit? 20 despoilers. Any other unit? Another 20 despoilers.

Higher? Afaik yes.
Different? No, the overcharged volkite serpenta for the moritat have a lower deflag value.
Its not a rule thats used very much, but I think having it be variable is a fine idea, gives them room to do funky things with it in the future. Maybe demons get some sort of "maggot blade" which deflags at a lower strength to represent insects spawning from the wounds to bite you or whatever.

WE fully valued heavy weapons (until later in the heresy and Angron went full retard and ordered all the tanks and shit to be mothballed so the crews could be more line infantry).
But ye, you really want target saturation with WE infantry.
Basic infantry die like flies, so 60+ gives you enough bodies to ensure shit actually gets through with enough attacks to actually do their job.

yes and no. Volkite HSS are a LOT weaker now, so a lot of armies might end up lacking good "delete power armor" options since (like with the lascannon HSS) I suspect a lot of armies relied on some crutch units.
Faced with having to spec for elites and AV14 and "mass power armor" I think a lot of people will choose the former.

If you've already built and painted tacticals then you may as well use tacticals, bring 1 tactical for every 2 Despoilers.
If you've built them but not painted them yet then you might be able to do model surgery by replacing the bolters with special weapons. The special weapon sprue is actually designed to use bolter arms, it doesn't come with its own the way that the heavy weapon sprue does.
Only do that if you're confident you can clean up any mistakes with the clippers tho. You don't want to fuck up your dudes following the advice of a weirdo on a Jamaican rum brewing forum.

WE valued heavy weapons but generally they were direct fire weapons mounted on tanks or dreadnoughts. Angron was too retarded to understand how artillery worked and man portable autocannons are too unwieldy to beat people to death with.
There are always exceptions of course and every legion had enough dudes do do everything at least a little but IMO the WE gameplay experience is constant pressure and forward momentum. Never stop moving towards your enemy, box him up inside his deployment with weight of numbers and bury them.
Mechanically heavy weapons are priced as if they're immobile, if you have to move with them they get noticeably weaker in some regards which makes HSS a hard sell to me, plus they're way more expensive and the WE don't want fragile expensive points sinks because they WILL be within range of the enemy most of the game.

Plus a Mortar is only 140 points and a single artillery commander can bring 3, or 6 in an artillery cohort. I can get 2 AV12 artillery tanks for 280 points and your get 10 volkite scrubs for 250.
Sure the HSS can pick up a squad of lasrifles but he's spending 250 points to pick up 100 points of chaff, I win that trade.

The Explorator is an exception to this, 240 points for 6 lascannons in an AV14/14/14 HP8 Brick with outflank that can also transport 10 dudes.
Its not the most point efficient way of spamming lascannons in the army but its surprisingly close. 7 HSS lascannons are 245 points and 2 quad las predators are 260.
The Kratos is meta dependent but its also pretty good. The Spartan and the carrier are the only real stinkers.

The issue with land raiders and spartan is that you are dealing D1 if you move and that hurts las canons a lot.

You outflank so your opponent doesn't know what board edge the transport is coming from. You come in turn 2, dump your cargo and spend the last 2 turns taking potshots at whatever threatens them OR you start on the board, drive up 12" and disgorge some tacticals or whatever then turret for the other 3 turns.
6 lascannons firing for 3 turns will kill 5 Cataphractii or fuck up a pair of predators, plus you only need to worry about the really big guns since even powerfists can't hurt you and chainfists are horrible.

You could also just, not run a Siege breaker. Or even just run 1 unit of 4 instead of 2 units of 2.
The real power of phosphex isnt the damage (though it is nice) its the fact that they're panic 3 So everyone immediately shits themselves the moment the bombs come down and are almost completely useless for a turn afterwards.
Odds of an MEQ not immediately routing from a touch of phosphex is 28%. If its not a cataphractii command squad or lead by a Chaplain its gonna run away.

Unironically Land Raiders with terminators:
1. LR (6 Lascannons) and Terminators (20 bolter shots) both shoot at the Tactical blob furthest away. This kills about 5 Tacs, enough to make them test for Rout
2. The LR shoots its heavy flamer pintle at another squad, which will make them test for Rout. At Ld8, Rout is about 50-50, meaning at this point at least one squad will be Routed
3. Units no longer need to charge the unit they fired at, meaning those Terminators can charge the closest unit. They will win, and thus Rout another unit
400 pts of LR + Termies already Routed 400 pts of Tacticals, and they can keep going, while the Tacticals can't. Also, you still have 600 pts of stuff you can use.
As for those who would claim one Land Raider won't be in a position to fight 60 marines at once, yes it will. It can move as fast as those guys get to run, and there's only so much space to place 60 marines, let along a hundred.
And you can afford two and a half such spearheads to their hundred Tacs, and they can't afford anti AV14, because it's either that or a hundred Tacs
But yeah, "ignore" the Land Raiders LMAO

How do you kill tactical squads without incurring crippling losses?
How do you charge something that has the same initiative as you without incurring crippling losses on volley fire?

Shoot them when they can't return fire, or from outside 24" range, or with something that laughs at str 4 ap 5, or in close combat with any remotely CC capable unit.
>How do you charge something that has the same initiative as you without incurring crippling losses on volley fire?
Reach base contact with the set up move, apply stunned or suppressed status, charging a unit without proper ranged weapons to do volley fire with, just pass those saves

They're less extreme, but still very strong.
Cavas lost firepower, but gained indirect fire and double range when not moving. Calix lost shots but still does a good amount of damage. Their giant wound pool and good defensive profile means they can survive a lot of shooting and then get repaired next turn since Battlesmith now restores (X) wounds. Good unit.

>Reach base contact with the setup move
You can't do that if they have the same initiative as you. You have to stay outside of combat range and they can reposition outside of your setup move because it's the same distance as your setup move.

Unless you used something faster, like Assault marines, who have twice the attacks for 1.4x the cost. Though they'd need to be at 1" distance away (the Tacs reposition 4", the Assaults Setup 5"). Besides Space Wolves, idk who can give extra Set Up distance to Assault marines.

Tactical marines shooting bolters only gets scary for 3+ power armour when it's a squad of 20. Nobody is impressed by a 10 man tactical squad shooting back.
Units can only do one reaction each turn now. If the unit moves back with reposition, you shoot the fuck out of them because they can no longer return fire. Then you charge anyway, because most volley fire is fucking pathetic you aren't seriously scared of some bolt pistols, are you? and the unit can't use Overwatch either. You're making way too big of a deal out of volley fire, unless you're charging terminators or bikes or something volley fire isn't gonna do shit, it's snap shots too in most cases.
Set up move also isn't just initiative, it has its own table. Assault marines or other units with jump pack already have a 5" set up move. Most marine characters will have a 4" set up move You move the closest model first, so this edition you literally want your characters to be leading the charge to cover extra distance
Reaction points are also limited. In most instances there will be way more valuable units than tactical squads that your opponent will use their reaction points on.

That's either terrible dice luck which can't be fixed, or shooting your tacs into a bigger tactical squad - in which case what else did you expect.
Also try to think more with units supporting each other. If the tactical squad returns fire into your tactical squad, you can now safely shoot those tacticals with something else. Same thing with moving units close for a charge: first move other units closer to try and bait out the reposition, then move your killy melee unit in range after they moved. The ol' one-two mindset as I like to call it.

There's more reactions and less reaction points now, anon. If the enemy repositions, they might not be able to Return Fire or Overwatch afterwards.
Also in 2.0 it was about what gimmick your Tacticals had. IW and DG tacs had ways to Fury on the move, AL could position themselves in rapid fire range while the enemy still counted them as single shot, etc. You may want to do similar idk your legion

I guess I can try to put more units into a squad but that always feels like a losing battle; if I focus too hard on one squad I'm gonna get mauled next turn by all the stuff I ignored. And trying to figure out who to sacrifice to return fire is super hard because none of them are worth less than the tac squad I'm shooting.

I'm just wondering what other units you are using that your opponent can afford the luxury of using return fire with a 10 man tactical squad. Is there nothing else in your list that applies pressure during the movement phase threatening a charge, with ranged damage output during the shooting phase, and/or multiple units that can attempt a charge?

One side of the board my VHSS killed a tartaros squad but then got routed and my tacs on that side died. On the other side my praetor deathstar and the TSS chugged along in the rhino while my tacs went up to try to sit on points. The rhino disgorged its contents to wipe up some cenobium, which took that entire flank both the shooting and fight phases to do, while my contemptor shot a leviathan and got taken down to one wound, then charged it and since I didn't know what implacable advance did, died in volley fire.

I can bring 2 medusas for every Volkite HSS, he fires once, annihilates 20 dudes, I reaction fire a medusa, then next turn I shoot him with 2 more, he's now lost between 6 and 9 bodies.
Best case scenario his remaining 4 guys fire one more time, score 9 wounds, I fail 5 saves and then lose 3 more dudes to deflagrate, he killed 132 points worth of auxilia chaf for 250 points.
8 auxilia out of 20 isn't even enough to trigger a panic test thanks to the auxilia vexila. Next turn one of my medusa Mortars and the damaged lasrifle section finish off his HSS while my other Mortar starts shooting the objectives.
He could have accomplished the same result for cheaper bringing heavy bolters instead. Or brought autocannons for an extra 50 points and killed my medusas.
Volkites are dangerous because they are a lot of shots thst wound marines on a 2+ and generate extra wounds on unsaved wounds. Thing is fucking everything already wounds Aux on a 2+ and the culverin is literally the only heavy weapon a HSS can carry they actually get an armour save against so even with deflagrate its still only got 75% of the effectiveness of the cheaper HB which has the same number of shots, also wounds on a 2+ and Is AP4.

Alpha legion Auxilia motherfucker, you're shooting my lasrifles with those laser destroyers as well. Ultima Cohort so my first diversion or fire support is literally free. I suppose you could avoid the fire support reaction fire by shooting your rapiers first and forcing me to protect the medusas with auxilia so they're no longer eligible for fire support but that just means both my medusas need to shoot you turn 2 to make up for it and you kill an extra 3 aux.
That forces a coinflip panic test I can clear with The Legates command Vox while he cowers in a corner behind a dracosan and desperately hopes you didn't do something smart like bring your own barrage weapons.
There's plenty of shit marines can bring which fuck up the SA but Volkite Culverins aren't it, Heavy Bolters are so much scarier to me and they're cheaper too.

Thats 160 auxilia boys for 900 points WITH Vox, Vex and the line comnand itself.
If you're playing Ultima you should have at least a hundred auxilia on the board or you're playing it wrong.

Most anti infantry is absurd overkill for 10 auxilia, if you want squads of footsloggers take them in 10 man's and trying to destroy them with anything more than a bolter will be a complete waste of your enemies time BUT if your enemy ever wants to shoot anything else you can laugh at him and force him to shoot your ablative infantry anyway.

I stuck my planned collection in new recruit all in one list just for fun and it turns out I actually can fit it all in one legal list and still have one detachment slot left. Should
>Primary: Crusade: Saturnine Praetor, Tartaros Centurion (Prime, LB), Librarian, Champion, 10x Tartaros Command Squad (LB), 20x assault squad (Prime, Zealous Assault)
>Apex: Officer Cadre: Delegatus (Prime, LB), Master of Descent, 3x Saturnine Command Squad (LB)
>Apex: Exalted Conclave: 2x20 Despoilers (Prime, True Believers), 2x10 gal vorbak
>Tactical Support: 2x10 plasma tactical support
>Veteran Cadre: 10x praetorian Command squad, 10x tactical veteran squad
>Shock Assault, 2x6 Saturnine Terminators
>Shock Assault, 10x indomitus Terminators, 5x Tartaros Siege Squad
I guess I could use the last detachment slot to bring either a planet fall detachment with 2x10 veteran assault squads to help me fight more elites, or 2x5 ashen circle squads for more ooga booga shenanigans, which do you think would be more helpful considering my existing army

For once, I'm actually excited for Blackshields rules. Having one extra layer of customisation in being able to build your own legion rules on top of the slightly anaemic options for individual characters might make putting together Marine allied detachments rather more entertaining - Solar Aux manage a decent amount of variety just from Legion Auxilia + Cohort traits.
Jank as they were, I kind of miss the old pile of relics from HH1e, with the psyker brain in a jar or the tome of demonology you could throw on any IC.

Mechanically, anything with a status is quite attractive on transports that don't otherwise fight, so I'm a fan of Havoc Rhinos this time around. I'm also thinking that hunter-killer missiles might not be a bad bet in four turn games, especially for the tanks that can take them for 5pts. For some reason Rhinos pay 10.
For sponsons I tend to pick for pure light show, so Multilas/Volkite/Flamer.

That's a lot of anti-meq there, boss. 2 rapier laser destroyers aren't hard to smack into a list to provide basic anti vehicle. If the cataphractii are in a spartan, you could use the lascannon arrays to provide a bit of AV firepower, but don't rely on it. Melta dreadnought (Leviathan or Contemptor) could help.

Automata getting to close quarters with Firestorm and Implacable Advance to fire twice before charging are real terrors, even the Castellax were killing a few marines with sheer volume of S6.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the affordability of chump Enginseers given that they're troops. I'm still cursing Mech's lack of jump pack options, but even the lesser Troop techpriests can be Archimandrites, which boosts them up to 9/9/8/8 on the advanced characteristics and allows them to join allied units at no penalty, making them dirt cheap cybertheurgist Chaplains who can battlesmith and tote gravguns/meltaguns, or pay 25pts for a cyber-familiar and basic cybertheurgy for a 60% chance to give your vehicles/dreadnoughts +1BS. Even with the cybertheurgy package and a grav gun they're only 65pts.
Mech can also put one in the Prime Troop slot and get 10/10/9/9, which is incredibly good, but they can't then join that guy to anything that really cares because the units that really need a morale boost plus a good caster are, yet again, the jump pack units, and their slow shooty units have specific Arcana requirements for their buff spells or want Cybernetica attendants to make them score.

This edition's Thallax are solid units and really love loading up on special weapons, since every model can take one. Their standard lightning guns are nothing to write home about in damage terms but can debuff enemy units just by scoring a few hits, so you'll want a couple per squad to reliably proc suppression tests and take the first hits when the squad is fired upon. Half or two-thirds of each squad running around with any of the special weapons they can take is a solid idea. All of the weapons they come with are good - phased-plasma fusils eat through 3+ armour Marine squads for cheap, multimeltas and photon thrusters chunk terminators, custodes and light/medium vehicles.
Theoretically there's very little wrong with mixing multimeltas and photon thrusters in the same squad, they have the same range and similar target profiles, but I haven't tried it because I tend to play online and it's nice and neat to have one squad with four multimeltas and one squad with four thrusters.

With what you've got I'd probably do one squad with three plasmas and one squad with 2x melta, 2x thruster, which is a little less plasma than I'd like but is still a 150-160pt squad that will happily get in a shooting match with its points in tactical marines and win as long as they don't somehow get you in melee. If you ever get another box you can go up to three squads of six, each of which has four of each special weapon, or two squads of nine, which is their max squad size. No idea how magnetisable the plastic kits are, though.

better Ld, better Int (unmodified with base wargear for both, the Praevian does 1 battlesmith 35/36, the Tech-priest does 2 battlesmith ~3/4, so much more of a gamble - the Praevian is 35% more likely to succeed), better armour, invul and FNP (worse T but this is easily offset by those saves and the extra W), comes with the cyber-familiar and cortex controller than cost +30 points for the Tech-priest
Comptroller and Master of Machines allows Automata scoring (which is probably good for Thanatar) but Master of Automata allows joining Automata without reducing characteristics (and regardless of Faction the way its worded)
Praevians also get to play with Legion armouries and Traits, so for example a WS Praevian can give Move Through Cover for +10 points, SW can have a sacrificial Praevian that dies in a Challenge and adds Attacks to the robuts, BA Prime Praevian can confer Fear (1), Salamanders are stupidly resilient etc etc; Narik Dreygur is probably worth babysitting with a unit of Automata in an assault role

No, DG only count as not having moved if they move less than 4" during the movement phase. Anything that says "They count as having moved." still works. Disembarking, being set up, etc.

Stock praevian is a 95pt model with a bolt pistol and that's it, so he's paying a lot for those stats.
Standard tech-priest is 30pts, so once you add the cortex controller, the cyber-familiar, a real gun (10pt melta or grav), Overcharge Reactors and either the Cybernetica keyword (robot entourage can score and deny, and have the equivalent of Line 1) or the Archimandrite keyword (LD9, CL9, same aggregate stats as the Praevian but also has Cybertheurgy) the tech-priest is still 20pts cheaper and can happily pick up a real melee weapon.
You really need to leverage any legion-exclusive benefits or need the extra aux detachment for the Praevian to be worth it over a troop Tech-Priest, the slightly better durability isn't worth a ton here when cybertheurgy lets the priest increase the combat efficiency of his robots by about a third with boosted weapon skill. The actual thing the Praevian lets you skip here is a Mechanicum command choice to unlock a detachment to put the robots in.
What's the best legion-specific detachment?

Right so "best detachment" depends on how you're defining best.
If we define "best" as the detachment with the best units then its Leviathal because Seekers are busted and there is no more efficient way to spam them.
If we define "best" as having the most listbuilding utility then Primus Demi Company is unmatched since you can either use it to add infinite troops, FA and or fast attack slots to an army or use it as an extender to effectively add 2 troops, 1 support and 1 FA to ANY other detachment.

the Tech-priest will never have WS5 tho :)
the Praevian is a fluffy choice that, like a lot of fluff units, isn't always good for what you want it to be good at (in this case we are early in an edition where he can't have a thunder hammer whereas anybody who had one last edition probably gave him a thunder hammer and is malding about it)
as far as Tech-priests go, they need the cyber-familiar or they'll only pass Battlesmith rolls and Cybertheurgy checks on ~3/4 of tries, and for Cybertheurgy in particular will (with the difficulty penalty to Int) fail a lot more than they pass (about 40:60 pass:fail) on the lesser stuff like Overcharged Reactors and even more than that on more difficult Rites, so that efficiency comes from a guy who takes up a command slot, isn't as durable to shooting as a Praevian and isn't particularly reliable at granting efficiency - Archimandrite doesn't affect the relevant stat here either
the Praevian is also significantly more durable at the baseline despite the T difference, and again, you know, NL Praevian can make you fight his robot buddy while he does something else
would it be nice if the Praevian had the same benefit from hiding in a unit that Perturabo gets from hiding in Iron Circle? sure, but it would make Mr Bitter than little bit less special

They will seethe at people pointing out the flaws, they will cope that the flaws aren't that big a deal, they will force themselves to play it over and over again(or at least pretend to for social media) because the alternative horrifies and terrifies them; the thought of not being beholden to a corporate daddy to tell them what to do, the notion they might have to organise their own hobby, that they might have to be creative, and in doing so find those deepseated fears that they're just mere followers, that they're social rejects, and that all the hugbox praise they get for their shitty paintjobs was insincere were valid all along.
They'll bend over and gape themselves for anything GW wants to shove up them because the alternative is confronting their own miserable, pitable, limited existence.
